Breast Augmentation... Not Just About Size!

When the topic of breast augmentation or cosmetic breast surgery is approached, many immediately conjure stripper, Vegas cocktail waitress, Heidi Montag, oversized, mountainous, cleavage-bearing breasts that defy gravity and the clothing wrapped around them. But prominent New York Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Scott Newman, who specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery, notes the majority of women who opt for cosmetic breast surgery are more interested in finding the right size for themselves rather than obtaining overpowering breasts that enter the room before their body does.

"There are many reasons women seek enhancements; centerfold boobs are a small portion," explains Dr. Newman. "Most of my patients are average women who want to look great in a bathing suit, as well as in a business suit," he added. "Other motivating factors include asymmetrical breasts, postsurgery reconstruction, postpregnancy sagging, underdevelopment and body proportioning."

Many of Dr. Newman's patients are asymmetrical, where one breast is larger or different in shape than the other, in some cases as much as a cup size in difference. For these women, simply finding a bra to fit comfortably and properly is impossible, and they are forced to add padding to create a uniform appearance in clothing. Dr. Newman's enhancement procedures bring balance and proportion to a patient's form, allowing her to feel more comfortable in and out of clothing.

Another common augmentation procedure is breast reconstruction, especially with breast cancer patients. The devastation of going through a mastectomy or double mastectomy is softened with a reconstruction procedure.

Pregnancy and nursing can have an adverse effect on a woman's breast shape and size, causing sagging and, in some cases, a change in the amount of breast tissue. These are women who simply want to return to their pre-baby size and shape.

And, for some women whose breasts are underdeveloped or disproportionate, augmentation can produce complementary body symmetry.

The latest annual report released early in February 2011, from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), of which Dr. Newman is a member, notes an increase in cosmetic surgical procedures for 2010 with breast augmentation as the No. 1 selected procedure.

Dr. Newman, of Advanced Plastic Surgery Center in New York, has performed over 4000 surgeries including 57 doctors, four of whom are Plastic Surgeons themselves. His in-depth, personalized, one-on-one consultations guide him in determining the "best" procedure for each patient.

Posted on: Monday, 25 April 2011, 00:00 CDT

Goldberg & Krieger Plastic Surgery, a Virginia-based cosmetic surgery practice, is now offering specials on injectable fillers as well as surgical procedures.

Fairfax, Virginia (PRWEB) April 23, 2011

Goldberg & Krieger Plastic Surgery (http://www.virginiaplasticsurgery.com), a plastic surgery practice in Virginia, is springing into the season with specials on injectable fillers and cosmetic surgical procedures. Products such as BOTOXR Cosmetic, RestylaneR, and PerlaneR are discounted up to $200 off. In addition to these fillers, Dr. Andrew Goldberg and Dr. Mitchel Krieger perform various plastic surgery procedures, which are also discounted for a limited time.

Dr. Goldberg states, "The U.S. economy seems to have been improving, and more women and men are considering the benefits of cosmetic treatments and surgery. To help, we are offering discounted prices, so that people can treat themselves to a cosmetic procedure."

Drs. Goldberg and Krieger offer various plastic surgery procedures for the face, body, and breasts. In addition to providing Virginia liposuction, the doctors also see post-bariatric patients. This wide range of procedures and treatments, both surgical and non-surgical, gives options to women and men who want to correct or "fix" a specific area, but don't know which method is best.

"One of our primary goals is to make our patients happy, which is why we offer so many different choices," explains Dr. Krieger. "For example, for those who only want subtle improvements for fine lines or wrinkles, BOTOX or other injectable fillers may be the option for them."

In addition to liposuction, the doctors also offer Virginia patients breast implants for breast enhancement. With summer coming soon around the corner, now is a great time for a surgical procedure.

Dr. Goldberg says, "Since the warmer weather is fast approaching, now is a fantastic time for a surgical procedure. We hope that with our limited time offers, patients can have their procedure so they can enjoy their summer and their new and improved bodies."

Dr. Andrew Goldberg and Dr. Mitchel Krieger (http://www.virginiaplasticsurgery.com) are board-certified plastic surgeons serving cosmetic surgery patients in Fairfax County, Virginia and the surrounding areas. Dr. Andrew Goldberg received his medical doctorate from the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey and has been performing plastic surgery in Virginia since 1991. He specializes in aesthetic and complex reconstructive surgical procedures, including breast and body contouring. Dr. Mitchel Krieger, a former army surgeon, received surgical training in San Francisco and Washington D.C. He specializes in aesthetic breast and body recontouring surgery and has co-authored a book on post-bariatric plastic surgery.

Vegas woman dies after backroom cosmetic surgery

Vegas woman dies after backroom cosmetic surgery
CRISTINA SILVA,Associated Press

LAS VEGAS — With her smooth skin and wavy, honeyed hair, Elena Caro was celebrated as a beauty by her husband and teenage daughter, who often told her that she didn't need cosmetic surgery.

But at 42, Caro wanted firmer skin and a younger figure, so she secretly booked an appointment with a medical office recommended by a close friend.

The quest for perfection might have ended her life, police said.

Caro was found walking the streets of Las Vegas in agony Saturday after buttocks enhancement surgery that authorities say was performed by two Colombian nationals in the back room of a tile business.

She was pronounced dead minutes later at North Vista Hospital in North Las Vegas. Her cause of death was not immediately determined, pending toxicology tests and an investigation.

Ruben Dario Matallana-Galvas, 55, and Carmen Olfidia Torres-Sanchez, 47, were arrested hours after the surgery for investigation of murder, police said.

The husband and wife were being held without bail at Clark County jail pending a court appearance on Tuesday. It was not immediately clear if they had lawyers.

Las Vegas homicide chief Lt. Lew Roberts said backroom clinics can be found across Sin City. But he said there hadn't been any deaths involving unlicensed physicians in at least six years.

"The tragic thing about this case is that this isn't an isolated incident of somebody going to an unlicensed alleged medical facility," he said.

Matallana-Galvas and Torres-Sanchez had purchased airplane tickets to return to their native Columbia on April 22 but were trying to catch an earlier flight at McCarran International Airport when they were arrested, police said.

Neither suspect had a license to practice medicine in Nevada, officials said. Matallana-Galvas told police he was a homeopathic doctor in Colombia.

Under questioning, he also told detectives he injected Caro with a gel substance, and she was able to walk away from his office after the procedure, according to a police report.

However, Elizabeth Flores, an aide to Matallana-Galvas, told police he had called and said something had gone wrong, and Flores had her husband drive him and his wife to the airport, the police report said.

Caro's daughter, 17-year-old Janet Villalovos, told The Associated Press that her family had begged Caro not to undergo cosmetic surgery.

However, encouraged by a friend who said she had successfully received buttocks enhancement surgery from Matallana-Galvas, Caro booked an appointment for facial Botox injections with him earlier this month.

When no complications arose, Caro quickly scheduled the buttocks surgery. She told only her daughter because she was worried that her husband, brother and sister would be too critical of the procedure and try to talk her out of it.

That morning, Villalovos said, she drove her mother to the makeshift medical office and gave Matallana-Galvas a warning.

"I told them, take care of her, please," Villalovos recalled. "He told me everything is going to be fine. Don't worry."

Villalovos watched the doctor and his wife inject one shot into her mother's buttocks. The sight made her squeamish, so she told her mother she was leaving and would return in four hours when the procedure was done. An hour later, her mother called to say everything was going well.

Later, her mother didn't answer repeated calls, Villalovos said.

When Villalovos returned to the makeshift medical office, it was locked and appeared abandoned. She asked Gilbert Estrada, the owner of Tiles and More, to unlock the door. Inside, the bed, curtains and curtain rods that had filled the room that morning were gone.

Estrada said Matallana-Galvas rented the small office two weeks ago and had said he would relocate by the end of the month.

"They were looking for a bigger place to serve more people," Estrada said in Spanish.

Caro was already dead when her daughter began searching for her, according to an arrest report. Onlookers had called emergency officials, who picked her up in an ambulance and took her to the hospital.

Roberts said police do not know how Caro ended up in the remote area but suspect she was dropped off there.

Matallana-Galvas said he had told Caro he didn't have the proper equipment to perform the procedure but did it anyway, according to the arrest report.

Nevada had no information on file on him or his wife, said Douglas C. Cooper, executive director of the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners.

Police are looking for other possible victims.

Wailing family members gathered Monday at Caro's house, where photos of her were displayed alongside a rosary and a row of candles adorned with Catholic saints.

Villalovos said she and her mother did not know Matallana-Galvas was not a licensed doctor, although his office walls did not bear any certificates, licenses or diplomas.

Villalovos said she trusted him because he treated her mother professionally and with authority.

"It was not her time to go yet," Villalovos said.

Perfect Skin? A Cosmetic Breakthrough

(Vocus/PRWEB) April 18, 2011

Drug-Aware Ltd, the company behind the tremendously popular Scientia Derma Roller, has launched a new beauty device called the Scientia Derma Stamp - an at-home cosmetic device used for removing scars, wrinkles, stretch marks and cellulite.

Cosmetic microneedling has been used in various forms for over 50 years, since Doctor Pistor discovered that the skin can be stimulated to greatly increase its levels of collagen using microneedles as thin as a human hair and as short as half a millimetre. Such a procedure has been proven to get results equivalent to (if not superior to) chemical peels, micro dermabrasion and laser resurfacing but without the hefty price tag, down time or trauma to the skin.

The only reason your skin gets scars, wrinkles or stretch marks is that it cannot produce enough collagen. So the discovery that a simple hand-held roller can trigger up to 1000% increase in collagen has not gone unnoticed in the cosmetic and beauty industry.

Celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been reported to have undergone Derma Roller sessions in order to maintain their youthful glow. The Scientia Derma Roller brought this process into people's homes, so that home treatment could be carried out at a fraction of the cost.

The Scientia Derma Stamp is a new variation which takes the best features of the Scientia Derma Roller, but adds a twist. You can literally twist the dial on the handle in order to select what needle length to use. Traditionally, you would need to purchase a derma roller with the correct needle length to treat your particular skin condition. For example, for better absorption of skin creams or for anti-ageing, a 0.5mm roller was ideal. But for light scarring, stretch marks, or deeper wrinkles a 1mm roller would be better. All the way through to a 1.5mm roller for deep stretch marks, deep acne scars or burn scars. With the Scientia Derma Stamp, one single device can be used to treat a wide range of conditions, by simply adjusting the needle length.

The UK-based firm is no stranger to providing market leading beauty devices, such as the Cleane Acne Therapy Device, and as such, the Scientia Derma Stamp is set to become another solid addition to their range.

Christopher Evans, the Technical Director of Drug-Aware Ltd told us "Because the stamp is applied directly to the skin, the needles penetrate the pores of the skin head-on and are not rotated into place like they are with a roller. This minimises the sensation of microneedling. Equally, with the new three facet needle profile, the needles themselves are designed to be pain free, yet still give the very best results. This really is the next generation of microneedling products and helps to keep us at the cutting-edge of beauty therapy devices".

For more information, or to purchase a Scientia Derma Stamp or Scientia Derma Roller, visit http://www.derma-rollers.com.

Murphy Plastic Surgery Reacts to Recent Trends in Anesthesia Techniques and Safety in Cosmetic Surgery

Denver, CO (PRWEB) April 25, 2011

Despite all the talk of “Awake Surgery” by other plastic surgeons lately, Dr. Murphy remains true to the standard anesthesia methods that are the safest for his Denver cosmetic surgery practice. Nearly all procedures performed by Dr. Murphy will utilize both local anesthesia and sedation in his AAASF accredited in-office operating room. When it comes to larger invasive procedures like tummy tucks general anesthesia is required.

Many cosmetic surgery offices have been making quite a splash about “Awake Surgery”. Physicians promoting the "Awake" technique claim it is more advanced and safer than traditional anesthesia and that traditional deep anesthesia is used by doctors only out of convenience. With these claims they also report that high doses of local anesthesia given to their clients are safe for the patient. Dr. Murphy wants patients to know that in fact, often times the "awake" methods are used by physicians because they have limited access to hospital privileges to perform the invasive surgeries under the anesthesia they require, and that most patients prefer the option of sedation.

Dr. Murphy reminds us that many of the assumptions made about “Awake Surgery” simply are not true. Established surgeons rely upon a combination of techniques and will use the most appropriate option for the procedure. This assures the comfort of the patient while avoiding the possibility of adverse reactions to the high levels of local anesthesia required if sedation were not used. Most cosmetic surgeons promoting "Awake Surgery" simply lack the hospital privileges required to do the type of heavy anesthesia that is best for invasive surgeries.

Patients report great satisfaction with the anesthesia techniques used by Dr. Murphy for their Denver plastic surgery and are most often happy to have sedation. “I am feeling absolutely wonderful!! My recovery has been quick. I owe all of that to you all. You have a great team work. Thank you for making me beautiful and so very happy.” reports one patient whom had general anesthesia for an abdominoplasty procedure.

Dr. Murphy prefers to keep patients safe and keep the grueling details of the surgery out of the patient’s memory. Local with sedation and general anesthesia remain as Dr. Murphy’s assurance that all of his patients are always safe and comfortable. Dr. Murphy’s Denver cosmetic surgery office values safety over all else.

About Murphy Plastic Surgery:
After completing medical school and a general surgery residency at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Dr. Murphy completed his plastic surgery residency in Boston at the Lahey Clinic, a surgical clinic associated with Harvard University. Dr. Murphy officially became a cosmetic surgeon Denver in 1994 and opened his current practice at the Swedish Medical Center in 1996. He is the Chief of Plastic Surgery at Swedish Medical Center and has been featured in 5280 Magazine and on Denver’s FOX 31 news. Thus far, Dr. Murphy has done thousands of plastic surgery procedures, including Denver breast augmentation.

More middle-aged men try plastic surgery

Michael Bell was tired of looking tired. He’d had enough of the pesky questions about whether he had slept well.

“I wanted to look as good as I felt,” said the retired educator, 53. “My face didn’t show how much energy I really had.”

So, after months of research, he got a little help for his sagging eyelids from a plastic surgeon. And he looks younger. Even his friends say so.

Forget droopy eyes. Bid farewell to those telltale wrinkles. And say sayonara to turkey neck. A small but growing group of middle-aged men are going under the knife to hold back the relentless march of time. They’re also getting Botox injections, soft tissue fillers and chemical peels in pursuit of a youthful look.

Procedures for men grew by 2 percent in 2010, led mostly by baby boomers — those born between 1946 and 1964 — who are getting more comfortable with the idea that a little cosmetic help can go a long way. It’s the first uptick since 2007, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, who say the change also signals that people are growing more comfortable spending money on themselves after the recession.

Between 2007 and 2009, the number of male cosmetic procedures remained steady at 1.1 million. But last year, the number inched up to 1.2 million. And, of all plastic surgeries, the share of men’s procedures has grown more significantly — from 8 percent of the total in 2008 to 13 percent in 2010.

The biggest increase has been in minimally invasive procedures — Botox and soft tissue fillers, primarily.

“It’s more acceptable,” says Ivan Malave, 50, who had his eyelids tucked, his eyebrows raised and then a hair restoration procedure for good measure. “My father would’ve never ever thought of doing this, but I definitely feel I made the right decision.”

Men of all ages are growing more comfortable with the idea of getting help for their looks, from special creams to injections or laser. Popular plastic surgery reality shows and affordable financing have also fueled the interest. Men see guys like themselves — not just celebrities or actors — improving their appearances on these shows and learn they can get the same results without taking too much time from work.

HAD SURGERY

Alfredo Amoedo for instance, had surgery for the annoying bags under his eyes on a Friday and was back at work by midweek.

“If you feel sick, you take a medicine,” Amoedo, 50, explains. “If you work out, you take a supplement. This is pretty much the same.”

Local doctors say boomers are reaching an age where exercise may no longer be able to fight off gravity. Hence, in 2010, facelifts for men rose 14 percent and liposuction 7 percent nationally, according to that ASPS.

“For the baby boomer generation,” says Dr. Jeffrey S. Epstein, a Miami and New York plastic surgeon who specializes in hair restoration and facial plastic surgery, “looking good and looking young has always been very important. Now they want to stay competitive and they want to look good.”

About 70 percent of Epstein’s patients are men, most of them in their 40s and 50s. In the past three months, he has seen a 20 to 25 percent increase in patients from the same time last year. “There’s pent up demand,” he adds. “I think there was a lot of job insecurity at one point and people weren’t willing to spend the money.’’

The natural cosmetic industry gains popularity

Herber Lovato / Assistant Photo Editor

Sophomore Jennifer Perdomo, 20, said she does what she can to get into the new green movement.

“I try as much as I can, like recycling and bringing water bottles from home and refilling them. I try as much as possible, its hard,” Perdomo said.

The political science major said she tried Bare Essentials and wears mineral make up from Maybelline.

“I’m pretty much into organic food and it’s (organic make up) also good for my face,” Perdomo said.

There is an ever-growing movement happening around the world with efforts to be more health conscious while watching the materials we use.

This new initiative has taken over yet another industry and it is as popular as ever.

The cosmetic and self-care sector has branched out to include organic and natural products for their consumers.

CEO and founder of EES Cosmetics, Edward Schack has been working in the cosmetic field for 26 years and is an expert in manufacturing and distributing cosmetics.

“The whole movement started in the food industry. We’ve seen a lot of great benefits in using organic, especially organic milk and organic vegetables and food not grown with pesticides or fertilizers. You get a better product,” Schack said.

He said the movement then moved into all food across the spectrum and into the dietary, supplemental and nutritional areas.

“We are getting more consumers driving the market wanting more natural alternatives to the pharmaceutical types they have for treating ailments,” Schack said.

Schack explained the growing trend of natural products made its way into the cosmetic industry soon after.

“With that happening, many companies are noticing that since it’s just a consumer-driven industry that their consumers are requiring more and more of their makeup and personal care type products? have an organic or natural effect,” Schack said.

He said this wave of organic or natural products started and really evolved in the last eight to 10 years.

“The organic move in the cosmetic industry and personal care is still strong,” Schack said. “Its not as strong as it was a couple years ago. The big movement right now is natural, with as many natural ingredients as possible.”

Schack said although there’s major popularity with natural products among consumers, there is a sort of hesitation in the industry to call something natural.

“We’re struggling with the word “natural” right now. There are a lot of different meanings and definitions to the word natural,” Shack said.

He said the industry is looking to the regulatory agencies to get a clear definition of what natural means.

“Natural to me is anything given to us from the earth. Its mostly grown, plant based,” Schack said.

Schack added there is a common misconception among consumers that anything that is natural is good for you.

“In general they’re correct, but something like arsenic, which is natural can be very devastating to an individual. We have to be careful about the word natural, what the definition is and what the real benefits are,” Schack said.

He said the cosmetic industry is still working on how to produce the best product without all the chemicals that are still present.

“The problem is there’s not a lot of natural alternatives to things like preservatives that are used in cosmetic products. But the industry is getting better and is addressing it,” Schack said.

He said while the industry gets rid of the petro chemicals,? the products will become better and will be accepted more by consumers.

“A lot with cosmetics and personal care is the feeling the person gets when they use the product. You establish that loyalty to the brand based on the person’s perception of that ingredient,” Schack said.

He explains the cosmetic industry is about how the customer feels about the product.

“‘What does it do for me?’ ‘Does it make me feel or look better?’ Depending on the answer to those two basic questions, the person is going to be a repeat customer,” Schack said.

He said companies that push natural products include Origins, Jo Malone, Aveda, and L’Oreal.

“Avon, Unilever, and Proctor and Gamble are moving more towards natural-based products. You’ve got some stand-alone companies that are doing very well, such as Burt’s Bees or Tom’s of Maine,” Schack said

This new wave of cosmetics has already hit the CSUN campus.

Freshman Edlin Gutierrez, 18, has tried Bare Minerals in the past and said wearing natural products is important to her.

“I like it,” she said. “I don’t want it (her make-up) to look so cakey.”

Gutierrez said when she wears natural products, it feels lighter on her face.

Atlanta Plastic Surgeons Now Offer Free Cosmetic Consultation with Appointment

Marietta, GA (PRWEB) April 24, 2011

Plastic Surgery Center of the South (http://www.plasticsurgerycenterofthesouth.net) now offers complimentary consultations for Atlanta plastic surgery procedures at its practice when patients request their appointment at the practice's website. Men and women can come in free of charge to discuss potential cosmetic procedures with one of the practice’s 3 board-certified plastic surgeons.

This opportunity will allow people to better understand plastic surgery in Atlanta, and to meet some of Atlanta’s most prominent cosmetic surgeons. Dr. James E. Leake, a member of the Plastic Surgery Center of the South team, says that the success of a person’s cosmetic surgery is largely dependent on their choice of surgeon.

“Whether you’re looking to contour your body shape or simply want to rejuvenate your skin in a medical spa, the proper choice of doctors is central to achieving the results you desire,” says Dr. Leake. “While there are many plastic surgeons in Atlanta, we strive to stand out by offering a unique, personal experience at our practice.”

Dr. E. Anthony Musarra, a plastic surgeon in Atlanta and doctor at Plastic Surgery Center of the South, says he’s excited to utilize his 32 years of medical experience to educate people about the many procedures offered at his practice.

“The complimentary consultation we offer is a great way for people to learn more about the procedures they’ve been considering,” says Dr. Musarra. “And patient education does several things. It helps people make better choices. It eases the fears that may be associated with having a surgical procedure. And it's an opportunity for the surgeon to make sure the patient really is a good candidate.”

Plastic Surgery Center of the South offers over 20 types of cosmetic procedures, each of which is tailored to a person’s goals. Consultations allow men and women to learn more about plastic surgery, and for doctors to learn more about the specific needs that will eventually personalize a procedure. Dr. Michael Petrosky, a third surgeon at Plastic Surgery Center of the South, says that he enjoys taking the time one-on-one with his patients.

“As a board-certified plastic surgeon, of course I love being in the operating room," notes Dr. Petrosky. “But I chose this area of medicine specifically for the transformations I can help people achieve, and I enjoy very much the patient relationships I've built over the years.”

Plastic Surgery Center of the South (http://www.plasticsurgerycenterofthesouth.net) is located in Marietta, GA, only minutes away from Atlanta and many of its suburbs. The practice's three board-certified plastic surgeons have over 70 years of combined surgical experience. Most of the cosmetic surgery procedures they offer are performed at the practice's state-of-the-art outpatient surgical facility, which offers the latest safety innovations and modern creature comforts. All of the surgeons also retain staff privileges at nearby Wellstar Kennestone Hospital and Marietta Surgical Center for more extensive cosmetic or reconstructive surgeries.

Chinese Turn to Plastic Surgery in Growing Numbers

But her jaw line? Too square for her liking. So the 22-year-old television reporter recently traveled from a coastal province to a private hospital in downtown Beijing to have it reshaped — for about $6,000. Her boyfriend, a 29-year-old businessman wearing designer eyeglasses, picked up the bill.

“I am not nervous at all,” said Devil (the English first name she chose for herself, and the only one she would reveal) as she awaited surgery at Evercare Aikang hospital in downtown Beijing. “I will look more sophisticated and exquisite.”

The breathtaking pace of transformation for upwardly mobile Chinese — from bicycles to cars, village to city, housebound holidays to ski vacations — now extends to faces. In just a decade, cosmetic and plastic surgery has become the fourth most popular way to spend discretionary income in China, according to Ma Xiaowei, China’s vice health minister. Only houses, cars and travel rank higher, he said.

No official figures exist, but the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery estimated in 2009 that China ranked third, behind the United States and Brazil, with more than two million operations annually. And the number of operations is doubling every year, Mr. Ma said at a conference organized by the Health Ministry in November.

“We must recognize that plastic and cosmetic surgery has now become a common service, aimed at the masses,” he said.

Face-lifts and wrinkle-removal treatments are in vogue, just as in the West. But at Evercare, which runs a chain of cosmetic-surgery hospitals in China, two-fifths of patients are in their 20s, said Li Bin, the general manager and one of the founders.

Nationally, the most requested surgeries have nothing to do with age: The No. 1 operation is designed to make eyes appear larger by adding a crease in the eyelid, forming what is called a double eyelid, said Zhao Zhenmin, secretary general of the government-run Chinese Association of Plastics and Aesthetics.

The second most popular operation raises the bridge of the nose to make it more prominent — the opposite of the typical nose job in the West. Third is the reshaping of the jaw to make it narrower and longer, he said.

The youthful patients include job applicants hoping to enhance their prospects in the work force, teenagers who received cosmetic surgery as a high school graduation present and even middle school students, most of whom want eye jobs, surgeons say.

China’s regulatory system, by all accounts, has not kept up. At the conference in Beijing in November, Mr. Ma, the vice health minister, said the situation “can even be called neglect.”

Out of 11 clinics and hospitals offering cosmetic or plastic surgery that were inspected late last year, he said, fewer than half met national standards. Employees lacked professional credentials, he said; equipment and materials were subpar. Beauty parlors are flagrant violators, illegally administering Botox injections and performing eyelid surgery.

Mr. Ma likened the industry to a medical “disaster zone,” with frequent accidents. His point was underscored when a 24-year-old former contestant on the Chinese reality show “Super Girl” died after her windpipe filled with blood during an operation to reshape her jaw in Hubei Province.

Health officials demanded an inquiry. But Mr. Zhao, who also serves as the vice director of Beijing’s government-run Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Hospital, said it was impossible to gather evidence because the body was quickly cremated — a common practice in China when hospitals privately settle malpractice claims.

“Personally speaking, I think this is pretty despicable,” he said. “We need to get to the bottom of such cases in order to protect people in the future.”

The shortcomings of China’s medical system are hardly limited to cosmetic and plastic surgery. But the industry now generates an estimated $2.3 billion in revenue, and the government has begun to take note. Officials say new regulations will probably be issued this year.

One implicit goal is to halt the flow of Chinese patients to better-established hospitals in South Korea. Mr. Ma estimates that Chinese make up 30 percent of cosmetic surgery patients in Seoul.

For now, many beauty salons, like one downtown Beijing branch of a major chain, are capitalizing on the lack of oversight. One recent afternoon, a 62-year-old woman in a white coat who described herself as an internist said she could summon a doctor who could give a visitor double eyelids in 20 minutes about $180, a fraction of the standard hospital fee.

“Immediately you will look different,” she said.

Shi Da, Li Bibo, Zhang Jing and Jonathan Kaiman contributed research.

New Jersey Cosmetic Dentist Supports U. S. Troops with more than Beautiful Smiles

Edward Romano, DDS, a cosmetic dentist in New Jersey, first began donating essential items to the military when a family member enlisted and was sent to Afghanistan. Today, Dr. Romano says the donations continue to pour in thanks to an updated billboard in his office, and the overwhelming generosity of his patients.

Morristown, NJ (PRWEB) April 19, 2011

At his New Jersey cosmetic dentistry practice, Dr. Edward Romano began donating essential items to troops abroad when a member of his family joined the Marine Corps and left for Afghanistan. Following the deployment of another family friend, Dr. Romano adopted a second Marine Corps unit. Since then, the practice maintains a billboard in the office with an updated list of essential items so patients can help New Jersey dentist Dr. Romano and Aesthetic Smiles of New Jersey continue to support U. S. troops.

Whether or not his patients believe in the mission, Dr. Romano says supporting the troops and their service to this country is of the utmost importance: “People honestly do not understand how much these guys miss their homes and how tough the job they do really is. They all have families praying for them and all want their sons and daughters to feel safe and feel as though home is not far away.” Dr. Romano says according to the many letters and emails his practice receives, he believes these packages provide this important connection for many troops.

Dr. Romano says the process is deceptively simple once a plan is in place. When patients bring in items listed on the office billboard, he packs the items and ships them to the various units the practice has adopted. “The great thing about the units is they are all brothers. They all share with each other so every package helps the entire unit.” While Dr. Romano says the process can be slow at times depending on the number of donations, the goal is to get packages out once a week to ensure a steady stream of items from home.

“My father was a 17 year old kid serving in the South Pacific during World War II. The items received from home were a major lifeline. I want those men and women serving today to know we are proud of them and grateful for their service.”

For more information on the Aesthetic Smiles of New Jersey U. S. Troop donation efforts, as well as a list of items in demand, visit Dr. Romano’s cosmetic dentistry blog.

About Dr. Romano

In addition to donating his time and efforts to the troops, Dr. Edward Romano lectures nationwide to support budding cosmetic dentists by passing down his extensive knowledge and experience. He specializes in a number of cosmetic dentistry procedures, including teeth whitening, InvisalignR, and porcelain veneers, as well as reconstructive dental procedures such as dental implants. Dr. Romano is also the attending dentist at Morristown Memorial Hospital, where he teaches advanced dental techniques to dentistry residents.

Beauty Experts: A Medical Super Couple Weighs in on Plastic Surgery

Posted on: Friday, 8 April 2011, 00:00 CDT

Drs. Elie and Jody Levine, a power couple in NYC’s cosmetic and plastic surgery scene, always agree if and when it’s time for patient's surgery

New York (PRWEB) April 7, 2011

Elie Levine, M.D., a highly regarded board-certified plastic surgeon and Jody Levine, M.D., a board certified cosmetic and surgical dermatologist (as well as a board certified pediatrician) don’t always see the same patients, but they do see eye to eye when it comes to the limitations of cosmetic dermatology.

“Some results are just better accomplished with surgery,” admits Dr. Jody Levine who treats patients’ beauty woes with lasers, lights and injectibles. Her husband, Dr. Elie Levine uses surgical and medical techniques to permanently improve, enhance or alter a patients’ appearance.

People make the mistake of relying on plastic surgery as a last resort, often filing it under something to get in your 60s when the other treatments have stopped working for them.

According to the Levines, the earlier the better. “Facelifts under-50 last twice as long as post-50s lifts,” explains Elie Levine. “Recovery is faster, trauma is minimal and the skin is more elastic.”

Excess weight, especially from childbearing, is another common problem that is best solved with surgery. “I see patients signing up for a series of long term treatments to fight the bulge, but the best solution sometimes is a tummy tuck,” said Dr. Jody Levine.

After awhile, surgery is the obvious better investment. “Especially if you don’t plan to have more children. Post-child bearing is the optimal time to get a tuck,” said Dr. Elie Levine.

The husband and wife team who own and operate Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, PLLC, a highly regarded Park Avenue medical spa and a single source cosmetic practice, are not always in favor of surgery.

Some patients want to avoid surgery at all costs. “Some want surgery and just aren’t candidates for it,” said Dr. Elie Levine. “Plus, my wife is often able to work her magic, keeping patients off my operating table for good.”

Lasers and injectibles have changed the scope of cosmetics in the last ten years. They’ve been instrumental in preventing the need for surgery for some, and delayed the inevitable for others who want to fight aging as long and as hard as they can. But, for some, surgery may indeed be the right decision.

A double consultation with both a plastic surgeon and cosmetic dermatologist expert team helps patients make an informed decision. Consultations can be made at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC (35A E. 84th Street) by visiting http://www.plasticsandderm.com or calling (212) 988-1800.

EXCLUSIVE: Plastic Surgery Record Holder Has Advice for Heidi Montag, Nicolas Cage

Cindy Jackson holds the world’s record for the most cosmetic surgeries ever performed on a single person—52, to be exact—including a dramatic jaw and chin reduction.

“It was really traumatic because whenever you cut into the bone, it’s painful—it really hurts,” Jackson told FOX411. “The chin and jaw are actually taken apart and then moved back and repositioned, and then held in place with tiny titanium pins. I still have the pins, but I don’t notice them at all—they’re very, very tiny.”

Jackson’s operation was similar to one of the ten procedures Heidi Montag had during her infamous marathon plastic surgery session performed by the late Dr. Frank Ryan.

“If Heidi Montag had the same thing I did, my sympathies are with her,” said Jackson. "It’s very difficult to go through that.”

Jackson, 55, started having plastic surgery back in 1988. Unlike Heidi, she's more than satisfied with the results.

“I have no regrets whatsoever—absolutely not,” declared Jackson. “It’s been a slow evolution. But, when you look at the list of what I’ve had done and how much I’ve changed, it’s quite a lot. But it was slow, it was considered, it was done properly and I’m happy with all of the results.”

Jackson, who spent upwards of $100,000 on her various surgeries, thinks Montag would have been happier with her results if she took her time with her transformation.

“The problem with having 10 things done at once is that you don’t know how they’re going to interact together on your face and body—you don’t know how your overall look is going to change,” she said. “Maybe that’s why she’s rejected the way she looks now—it was too much, she’s had bad pain associated with the experience and she had a lot of criticism in the press—all together, whether or not she likes what she sees—it was a negative experience in many ways for her, unlike my experience.”

Jackson, who consults royalty and A-list stars on their cosmetic surgery decisions, can easily spot secret celebrity surgeries.

“I would say that most people in Hollywood, that are on camera, have had something done,” declares Jackson. “And I say that with some degree of authority. If it’s bad surgery, I can tell—always. But if it’s good surgery, I shouldn’t be able to tell, and neither should anyone else.”

Women in Hollywood are not the only ones getting work done.

“Look at Sylvester Stallone—he’s obviously has had something done,” says Jackson. “I think he looks good. But I’m not sure about Nicholas Cage’s hair transplant, though—you can really see it in his close-ups. These days, you can have a follicle by follicle transplant into the scalp. I don’t know why someone of his stature would go and have something that is not done properly.”

John Travolta, however, is doing something right.

“Whatever wig John Travolta is wearing, he’s got the best—I think he’s got quite good taste. I see nothing wrong with wearing wigs, women have done it for decades.”

Jackson also has definite opinions on Hollywood’s top plastic surgeon’s handiwork.

“Both Sharon and Ozzy Osborne have both had facelifts, nose jobs and their eyes done—and they both look really good,” says Jackson. “I remember Sharon from the ‘80s when I was in a rock band—she looked totally different then. She looks amazing now, so I give her full credit.”

The Kardashian sisters are visiting the right people, “I think the Kardashians looks fine. They look OK. What I like about them is that they’re not peddling the size zero look—that’s why a lot of women like them—they look like real women. I don’t think they’re fat, they look healthy. Kim has that hourglass figure, which is very attractive. It signals to men that she’s fertile—she’s ripe for reproducing.”

And sometimes, you don’t need plastic surgery to look good. “I’m a fan of Jennifer Lopez—I think she looks amazing,” says Jackson. “She’s had twins, and the influx of hormones, progesterone in particular during pregnancy, will change the way you look—it makes your hair more luxurious and your skin better, and even though she had the babies a couple of years ago, she’s still benefiting from those hormones.”

Finally, Jackson believes that recently ousted “Celebrity Apprentice” contestant Lisa Rinna made the right move removing her trout pout, “Lisa Rinna had a happy ending with having her lip implant removed—as she gets older, that probably wouldn’t end up looking as good as it did when she was young,” declares Jackson. “You don’t want to see big fish lips on an old lady!”

Cosmetic surgery on the rise in the U.S.

New numbers out from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show more than 13 million surgeries were performed in 2010.

The boost in business is coming from an unexpected place-- from older workers trying to look younger in a competitive job market.

While the number of surgical procedures climbed 5 percent in 2010 from the year before. Other less expensive and invasive methods saw greater growth. Injectable treatments like Botox and other fillers jumped 12 percent last year.

And the ASPS thinks the trend will continue even after the job market turns around as the treatments grow in popularity.

Fears over mobile Botox services

 By Adina Campbell
Newsbeat reporter [an error occurred while processing this directive] Jemma Dixon explains why she has Botox treatments at home

There's concern for young people in their 20s who are choosing to have non surgical cosmetic treatments at home, rather than in a registered clinic or hospital.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) is warning that people should only have them done in a professional environment, rather than opting for a home visit to save money.

Jemma Dixon from Liverpool started having Botox and filler injections a year ago.

At first she went to a clinic but then realised she could save herself a lot of money by going through a mobile service.

"I've always been bothered about my frown lines," she says. "I started noticing wrinkles on my face in my late teens.

"I'm only 23 but having work done to my face makes me feel more confident."

Jemma, who works in a call centre, says she can save nearly £200 a session compared with the cost of visiting a big cosmetic surgery clinic, some of which charge more than £500.

She said: "I have it done every three months and sometimes it can be difficult saving up all that cash, but I never fail to get my Botox done now. Having my face done at home is better for my bank balance.

"I'm not bothered about the health risks because the lady who does it for me is well trained.

"It hasn't gone wrong yet and I'm pleased with the results. I spend about £600 on face treatments four times a year," she says.

'Not worth risk'

Latest figures show that on average more than one million people have non surgical cosmetic treatments every year in the UK.

Doctor Ash Mosahebi gives his top Botox safety tips

Doctors, however, say home visits are potentially dangerous for a number of reasons.

They say the person giving the treatment may not have the right skills and training, that homes aren't kitted out for medical emergencies and there could be insurance problems if anything goes wrong.

Ash Mosahebi, a consultant cosmetic and plastic surgeon and a member of Baaps, says the results can be nasty.

"When things go wrong they can go badly wrong," he says.

"You're putting your health and well-being at risk by trying to save a few pennies."

I've seen some terrible botched jobs. Fillers have gone all over the place and migrated to places they shouldn't have gone

Ash Mosahebi, cosmetic surgeon

"I've seen some terrible botched jobs. Fillers have gone all over the place and migrated to places they shouldn't have gone and it's been virtually impossible to correct it.

"The worst case scenario could leave you being disfigured."

The British Association of Cosmetic Nurses mainly carries out non surgical treatments and its president, Liz Bardolph, emphasises the need to tread carefully.

"The public must understand that the delivery of cosmetic injectables is medical and while home treatment may be convenient for the patient, the environment may fall short of what is desirable or safe."

Find out more about this subject in Botox Britain: Your Face in Their Hands, which goes out at 9pm on 7 April on BBC Three.

Woman's 52 Cosmetic Procedures

Cindy Jackson is beautiful, but she wasn't born with her show-stopping looks. She bought them.

Jackson, a Londoner who hails from the American Midwest, has had $100,000 in cosmetic procedures, including 14 full-scale operations as well as cuts, pulls, peels and jabs.

She's had Botox, five face-lifts and liposuction, and her eyes have been done – twice.

In total, Jackson has had 52 cosmetic procedures, a world record for the most procedures ever undergone by one person.

"I didn't set out to break, to set a world record, it was never my ambition, it's just that I had so much done," she said.

Asked why she had, she gave a simple reply: "For me, it was just to look better."

"For me, the best result is one that looks natural," Jackson added. "I wouldn't ever want anyone to stop and stare at me and say 'that woman's had a lot of surgery.' I would never want to look like I'd had anything done."

Jackson, 55, grew up in small town Ohio, with a short-tempered father and low self-esteem.

She recalled a comment someone made to her when she was young: "One guy said when I was 14, 'You know Cindy, when you smile, from the side your nose and chin almost meet.'"

"It was like being in the wrong body and wrong face and I felt that very much and wanted to change it," she said.

When her father died, he left her some money, and she used it to start her transformation.

She says she's been careful to take it slow, but also said she just wants to look beautiful and young.

"I feel like a young spirit and I don't want to look in the mirror and see and old face. I feel this is me," she said. "This is the way I should look."

New Jersey Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Thomas Streko, Explains How Sedation Dentistry Makes Dental Health Easy

04.04.2011– Westfield, NJ. – April 4, 2011 – One of New Jersey’s leading cosmetic dentists, Dr. Thomas Streko, recently published an article on his website, www.DrStreko.com titled "Relax — A Better Smile Is On The Way." In the article, Dr. Streko discusses how more and more people are experiencing the benefits of sedation dentistry. He says that those who experience any fear or discomfort when they visit the dentist, or would simply like to get procedures done quicker, should consider sedation dentistry for their next procedure or appointment.

Dr. Streko writes, “Imagine sitting down in a comfortable chair, leaning back, closing your eyes and drifting off into a state of complete and total relaxation. Some time passes, perhaps an hour or more, but it feels like just a few minutes. And when you return to reality, you do so feeling completely refreshed – and with the added bonus of dramatically improved dental health. It may sound like an impossible dream, but it’s becoming a reality for more and more people.”

“Sedation dentistry combines two things that otherwise don’t often fit together – dentistry and relaxation. Thanks to a variety of safe and effective medications that relax the body and mind and block pain, a visit to the dentist can now be as soothing as a trip to a day spa for a facial or massage,” continues Dr. Streko.

New Cosmetic Procedure Slimming Down Cowtown

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – Whether it’s love handles, saddle bags, or cellulite, many people spend hours each week trying to get rid of problem spots on their bodies and lose weight.

Now a new cosmetic procedure offered in Fort Worth can take inches off your waistline, thighs, buttocks, or anywhere else without surgery.

“It takes ten minutes; it’s completely painless,” said Dr. Richard Ethridge of Ethridge Plastic Surgery in Fort Worth, “No needles, no invasive procedures.”

The procedure called i-Lipo uses four low-level laser pads to target the fat cells, stimulating the body’s natural processes to empty stored fat.

“The fat will actually leak out,” said Ethridge, “and your body will pick that up in your lymphatics and metabolize that.”

Patients lose on average of 1/2 inch to 2 inches per session.

Each session costs between $200-250, with eight sessions recommended for maximum results.

“I actually did it twice last week and I lost about an inch and a half the first time and a half inch the second time,” said Sarah Dowers, “and that was on my abdomen.”

Like many women, Dowers is worried about bathing suit season inching closer.

“Basically, we’re going on a trip in the summer,” she said, “so I just wanted to get back into shape and figured this would give me a boost.”

With vacation just months away, she needed a faster fix than exercise alone could offer, Dowers said.

While she continues to work out, the non-invasive, quick procedure helps her spot reduce in problem areas where stubborn fat just won’t go away.

“It’s either that or surgery, which costs way more money and you have scarring,” she said, “with this there’s no scarring, no pain, nothing.”

“The majority of people will use it on their abdomen and thighs,” Dr. Ethridge said.? i-Lipo was just recently approved by the FDA and made available in the United States.

Currently, Ethridge is the only cosmetic surgeon in Fort Worth with the new technology.

More men getting cosmetic surgery

"People say I either look less tired, or maybe 5 to 7 years younger. Or they ask if I just got back from a vacation," says 46-year-old Earl. "I think it's like men going to beauty salons. No one cares," he adds.

Earl's not embarrassed to say he's had work done on his face.

"To fix impurities. Fix flaws. Could be acne scars. Could be sun damage. All of it. Just living in Florida, growing up in Florida," says Earl, who recently had Co2 Laser Surgery done.

It's like a mini face lift.

"A very advanced dermabrasion without the risk of infection like you used to have. Without all the down time you had. It's now like 5 days max and you're back in public," says Earl, who's one of the increasing number of men getting cosmetic procedures, both minimally-invasive and surgical.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says face lifts rose 14 percent year to year. Male liposuction is up 7 percent. Breast Reduction increased by 6 percent. Eyelid surgery isup 4 percent.

"We're allowed to feel good about ourselves. Just like women are. It's becoming less taboo. And that's a really good thing," says Dr. Matthew Knight, who performed Earl's laser surgery at his Dermatology Institute in downtown Orlando.

He too is seeing more men shed the sissy worries about cosmetic work. He even does laser hair removal on men.

"There are things you can do to look better, to improve the way your skin looks. Improve wrinkles and folds. Just by doing a small procedure. We didn't have that a few years ago. I think that's why it's on the rise," submits Dr. Knight.

"It's been de-stygmatized in society to a certain degree. People that look better, feel better, or get a better job. Get hotter dates," says Earl.

Report cosmetic-related health problems to FDA

“Even though these products are widely used, most don’t require FDA approval before they’re sold in stores, salons and at makeup counters,” says Linda Katz, M.D., director of the agency’s Office of Cosmetics and Colors. “So, consumers are one of FDA’s most important resources when it comes to identifying problems.”

The federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act defines “cosmetics” as products that are intended to be applied to the body “for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance.” But the legal definition includes items that most Americans might not ordinarily think of as cosmetics, including:

Face and body cleansers.

Deodorants.

Moisturizers and other skin lotions and creams.

Baby lotions and oils.

Hair care products, dyes, conditioners, straighteners, perms.

Makeup.

Hair removal creams.

Nail polishes.

Shaving products.

Perfumes and colognes.

Face paints and temporary tattoos.

Permanent tattoos and permanent makeup.

What to Report

Katz says consumers should contact the FDA if they experience a rash, hair loss, infection, or other problem — even if they didn’t follow product directions. The FDA also wants to know if a product has a bad smell or unusual color — which could signal contamination — or if the item’s label is incomplete or inaccurate.

If you have any concerns about a cosmetic, contact MedWatch, the FDA’s problem-reporting program, on the Web or at 800-332-1088; or contact the consumer complaint coordinator in your area.

When you contact the FDA, include the following information in your report:

The name and contact information for the person who had the reaction.

The age, gender, and ethnicity of the product’s user.

The name of the product and manufacturer.

A description of the reaction — and treatment, if any.

The healthcare provider’s name and contact information, if medical attention was provided.

When and where the product was purchased.

When a consumer report is received, the FDA enters the information into a database of negative reactions. Experts then look for reports related to the same product or similar ones. FDA scientists will use the information to determine if the product has a history of problems and represents a public health concern that needs to be addressed.

If you file a consumer report, your identity will remain confidential.

"Cosmetics are usually safe, but when they aren't, consumer reporting is essential so FDA can take action when appropriate,” Katz says. Those actions could — depending upon the product and the problem — range from issuing a consumer safety advisory to taking legal action.

This article appears on the FDA's Consumer Updates page, which features the latest on all FDA-regulated products.

Pointy elf-like ears- latest craze in cosmetic surgery!

New York, April 9 : Some young sci-fi fans in Arizona are apparently undergoing procedures to have their ears sculpted into elfish points despite the procedure's irreversibility.

ABC's "Good Morning America" revealed that they cut open the tips of their ears and have the cartilage sculpted into tiny, elf-inspired points.

Body modification artist Steve Haworth of Phoenix told ABC he's noticed more people looking to channel their inner elves, coming to him to perform the irreversible procedure, which costs 600 dollars.

"There's a lot of people out there who have an inner vision of themselves and they want to express that to the world around them," Haworth told the channel.

"I'm very happy to be an artist that can provide that kind of work," he added.

But some doctors warn that sculpting cartilage can lead to ear deformities and dangerous infections that can destroy ears within a matter of days, the channel reported.

Unlike tattoos and piercings, the procedure is also irreversible, not to mention painful.

Cosmetic Surgeries Booming Again in U.S.

Published April 05, 2011

| The Wall Street Journal

More than 1.6 million Americans went under the knife for beauty in 2010, receiving breast implants, liposuction or facelifts, sending the rate of cosmetic surgeries up almost 9 percent from the prior year, according to a report released Monday.

Plastic surgeons say the increase generally tracks a reviving economy: A 2009 Cleveland Clinic study found a direct correlation between plastic surgery procedures and trends in the S&P 500, Dow Jones and Nasdaq indexing.

"We've joked for years that we could create an economic indicator about how we're booked," said Felmont Eaves, president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Americans spent $6.6 billion on cosmetic surgery in 2010, according to a survey of 938 plastic surgeons by the ASAPS, a Garden Grove, Calif., group of plastic surgeons specializing in cosmetic surgery.

The five most popular surgical procedures in 2010 were breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, tummy tuck and breast reduction. All were up compared with 2009. Breast augmentation, the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure since 2008, has held fairly consistent during the recession, with the number of surgeries increasing 2 percent in 2010. Americans spent nearly $1.2 billion on breast augmentation in 2010, more than any other procedure.

This is in contrast to the number of liposuction surgeries, which has fallen 37 percent since 2007. While the survey doesn't explain why, Dr. Eaves said he's seen a similar decrease in liposuction in his practice and a slight increase in procedures such as thigh lifts and arm lifts that might produce a similar result.

Facelifts rebounded in 2010, increasing 35 percent from 2009. Facelift procedures decreased in 2008 and fell sharply in 2009. But in 2010, Americans spent $845 million on facelifts.

Facelifts are the second most expensive cosmetic procedure at $6,600 on average. (The most expensive procedure is a "lower body lift" at $7,904.)

Overall, there were 1.6 million elective plastic surgical procedures in 2010, down from the 2005 peak of more than 2.1 million, representing a modest recovery.

Women accounted for 91 percent of cosmetic surgeries in 2010 and make up the entirety of the 67 percent increase in surgical cosmetic procedures seen since 1997. In fact, slightly fewer men had surgical procedures in 2010 than in 1997.

New Jersey Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Thomas Streko, Discusses How Headaches Could Be a Dental Health Problem

04.06.2011– Westfield, NJ. – April 6, 2011 – One of New Jersey’s leading cosmetic dentists, Dr. Thomas Streko, recently published a blog on his website, www.DrStreko.com titled "Suffering From Headaches? See Your Dentist!" In the blog, Dr. Streko discusses how some chronic headaches – even migraines – can be linked to dental problems you might not even know you have.

Dr. Streko writes, “Headaches are a symptom of the condition called TMJ or TMD, which occurs when your temporomandibular joint, which connects your jawbone to your skull and allows it to move around, is stressed because it is out of alignment. The reason is simple. Headaches are often caused by stress and tension – and having a jaw that is out of alignment adds stress and tension not only to your mouth, but to your head, neck, shoulders and other parts of your body as your jaw strains to correct the condition.”

“If you’ve been suffering from headaches that won’t go away, tell your dentist at your next appointment. Or better yet, schedule an appointment now, and you could be feeling better a lot sooner,” continues Dr. Streko.
The entire article can be found at http://www.drstreko.com/blog/new-jersey-cosmetic-dentist-thomas-strekos-blog-suffering-from-headaches-see-your-dentist.php

A new survey shows that more than half (51%) of all Americans regardless of income approve of cosmetic plastic surgery, this is a 3% increase from 2009. According to the February 2011 report, 52% of respondents with an income of under $25K approve of cosmetic surgery (48% of respondents with an income between $25K-$50K approve, 45% of respondents with an income between $50K-$75K approve, and 56% of respondents with an income above $75K approve) and 29% of the respondents who earn under $25K would consider cosmetic surgery for themselves.

"As the numbers suggest, people in every income bracket, single or married, male or female, view plastic surgery as a reasonable option today," said Felmont F. Eaves III, MD, President of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). "Taking care of yourself and paying attention to physical appearance is increasingly important to everyone. As both traditional surgical procedures have been improved and refined, and new nonsurgical options have become available, aesthetic plastic surgeons have more to offer to our patients."

Other key findings of the study include:

- 53% of women and 49% of men say they approve of cosmetic surgery.

- 67% of Americans would not be embarrassed if their friends and family knew they had cosmetic surgery.

- 27% of married Americans and 33% of unmarried Americans would consider cosmetic surgery for themselves, now or in the future

- 67% of white Americans and 72% of non-white Americans say they would not be embarrassed about having cosmetic surgery.

- Most Americans (71%) said their attitude toward cosmetic surgery had not changed in the last five years, though 20% said it was 'more favorable.'

- Out of all age groups, men and women between the ages of 18 and 24 are the most likely to consider plastic surgery for themselves now or in the future (37%).

- 77% of Americans 65 or older say they would not be embarrassed about having cosmetic surgery.

The study was commissioned by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and conducted by the independent research firm Synovate.

According to 2010 ASAPS Cosmetic Surgery Statistics, almost 9.5 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States last year.

Women had nearly 8.6 million cosmetic procedures(92 percent of total) and men had more than 750,000 procedures (8 percent of total). Overall, the number of surgical procedures increased by almost 9 percent and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures decreased 9 percent from 2010. To access the complete 2010 ASAPS Statistics Click Here.
