Capitalist styles in fashion in N. Korea: online paper

Matt Rainey/The Star-LedgerA doctor administers Botox to a South Plainfield resident in this 2002 file photo.

TRENTON — An increasing number of teenagers nationwide are turning to Botox to improve their looks, studies show, a practice some state lawmakers say is disturbing enough to ban.

An Assembly panel today advanced a bill that would make it illegal for people under 18 to use Botox, a brand name for a botulism toxin, for cosmetic purposes.

Assemblywoman Cleopatra Tucker (D-Essex) introduced the bill in February, after seeing news accounts of teenagers using the toxin. She asked the Assembly Health and Senior Services Committee to act on it yesterday after seeing a television report about a San Francisco woman who said she injects her 8-year-old daughter with it for beauty pageants.

Clear Braces Special with Los Angeles Cosmetic Dentist

Dr. Michael Fulbright, a cosmetic dentist in Manhattan Beach, CA, is announcing a special on the clear bracing system known as Invisalign. On June 2, 2011, patients will receive free evaluations to determine if they are candidates, and then receive significant discounts and a free electric tooth brush if they start the InvisalignR procedure that day.

(PRWEB) May 17, 2011

At his Manhattan Beach cosmetic dentistry practice, Dr. Michael Fulbright is hosting an InvisalignR Day to help his patients improve the form and function of their smiles. If patients decide to start InvisalignR that day, they will receive significant discounts on the procedure and a free electric toothbrush.

Dr. Fulbright says InvisalignR clear braces are a viable solution for minor orthodontic concerns, such as crookedness, crowding, or gaps. He says he first maps each patient’s smile with advanced computer technology, and then uses a series of removable clear plastic trays to give his patients the smile they desire. Because the process is a gradual readjustment, Dr. Fulbright says the process is eliminates much of the discomfort commonly associated with traditional braces.

Whether Dr. Fulbright is correcting a patient’s smile with InvisalignR, or perfecting their smile with teeth whitening or porcelain veneers, he says he strives to create a natural-looking smile that is harmonious with the individual’s facial features. Ultimately, he says his goal is to create a smile that enhances his patients’ aesthetic appearance, while respecting the natural beauty and unique qualities they already possess.

Hearing on Franklin cosmetic tattoo place postponed

The Zoning Board of Appeals last night postponed a hearing for an East Central Street business seeking permission to offer cosmetic tattoos.

Julia Bowers, a representative of the applicant, Dermatology Associates, requested the postponement because of an emergency.

The company, which also has offices in Foxborough and Norwood, offers Botox, laser treatments, surgical dermatology for skin lesions and other services, according to its website.

Bowers, who performs the tattoo procedure, and dermatologist Alan Berlin told the board in March that cosmetic tattoos are not the same as a decorative tattoo.

Instead, it is frequently used to camouflage scars for people recovering from cancer, burns or other ailments and is often a last resort, they told the board, according to minutes from its March 17 meeting.

The tattoos only last two to three years and are not permanent like decorative tattoos, they said.

The procedure does not require a doctor's prescription but they said it would only be performed under the supervision of a dermatology group.

Bowers has been performing the procedures for 18 years and has received approval from five other towns, according to the minutes.

A business that offers cosmetic tattoo procedures is not allowed at the company's 440 East Central St. location without a variance from the Zoning Board.

The hearing was postponed to 7:40 p.m. on June 2 at the Franklin Municipal Building, 355 East Central St.

Brian Benson can be reached at 508-634-7582 or bbenson@wickedlocal.com.

Makeup artist says not all held to same professional standards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A local makeup artist is questioning why makeup artists working at cosmetic counters are not held to the same standards as those who work as professional, full time artists.

Jillian Doherty works as a professional makeup artist. She told Nashville's News 2 Investigates that she has studied at well known makeup institutes.

"I have 550 hours of makeup training specifically," she said.

However, in March the 23-year-old makeup artist was cited by an inspector with the State Board of Cosmetology for not having proper certification.

According to the state of Tennessee, to be a paid makeup artist in her Green Hills shop or on location, Doherty must complete 750 hours in the aesthetician curriculum or 1,500 hours of cosmetology instruction.

Doherty said she understands the need for regulations, but she questions Tennessee's law which allows makeup artists that work at cosmetic counters to do so without board certification or cosmetology inspection.?

"I'm definitely not about trying to avoid the law or avoid licenses. I want to do it the right way, but I also want to do what's fair," she said.

Under the Cosmetology Act of 1986 TCA Code 62-4-109 the state exempts, ‘any person who demonstrates or applies cosmetics without charge in a retail establishment.'

"They wouldn't be doing anything differently. They would be touching people's faces in the same way that I do," Doherty said.

Nashville's News 2 Investigates questioned the Department of Revenue which oversees the Cosmetology Board why the same requirements are not required for cosmetic counter makeup artists.

Public Information Officer Chris Garrett could only say because it is the law and the board follows the law.?

After speaking with Garrett, Nashville's News 2 Investigates pulled the original law from 1986 which was signed by Speaker of the House Ned McWherter, Speaker of the Senate John Wilder and Governor Lamar Alexander.

An exemption to the original law was added by then Memphis legislature Steve Cohen who is now serving as a United States Congressman.

According to officials for the congressman, neither Representative Cohen nor his long time aid can remember the reasoning behind the exemption 25 years ago.

In Part II, Nashville's News 2 Investigates talks to a Vanderbilt doctor who says the same medical issues for bacterial contamination exists whether a makeup artist works in a department store cosmetic counter or in a privately owned business.

Watch Part II on Nashville's News 2 at 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Kristen Stewart loves smoky eyes

Kristen Stewart always feels confident when she has smoky eyes.

The actress is rarely seen without lashings of dark eyeliner, with the cosmetic in place when she attended the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala in New York earlier this week. The star wore a floor-length red and black Proenza Schouler gown to the prestigious fashion event and her make-up look topped it off perfectly.

Beau Nelson created Kristen’s face for the gala and has discussed why she decided to play up Kristen’s eyes.

“As much as Kristen isn't a make-up everyday kind of girl, she does love the end result of the getting ready process. Smoky eyes make her feel ready and confident to take on the red carpet,” she told Us Weekly.

Kristen’s eyes were rimmed with CoverGirl Liquiline Blast in Black Fire, which was then carefully smudged for a sultry look. Liquid liner was then used to top up the look, which was covered in black eye shadow to ensure it stayed in place. Liquid liner was also used on Kristen’s rims, and the look was finished off with two coats of mascara on both lash lines.

“Kristen loves to always try something different and we’ve never done a smoky eye that stayed so close to the lashes, it was almost a little punk,” the make-up artist added.

Flavors and Fragrances to Reach $5.5 Billion

The US market for flavors and fragrances is forecast to rise 3 percent annually to $5.5 billion in 2014.

Demand will benefit from an improving economic outlook, as well as continued expansion in the food, beverage, and cosmetic and toiletry sectors.?Advances will be fueled by consumer interest in more complex, exotic and authentic flavors and fragrances, as well as the increasing utilization of these products as marketing tools and product differentiators.

Although the large food segment will offer the best opportunities, slow growth in food shipments will prevent faster advances for flavors and fragrances in this market.?More rapid gains are expected for the cosmetic and toiletry, and environmental fragrance goods markets.

Among the major product segments, essential oils and natural extracts are projected to achieve the most rapid gains through 2014. These and other trends, including market share and product segmentation, are presented in Flavors & Fragrances, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm.

Gains in the flavor segment will be triggered by heightened health concerns among the US population. New dietary guidelines released in 2011 directly address the nation’s obesity epidemic and other diet-related health issues, urging the consumption of nutrient-rich, lower calorie foods, particularly those with reduced sodium content.

In the cosmetic and toiletry market, skin care products will provide strong advances, propelled by demand for natural products and the incorporation of beneficial ingredients into skin care formulations.?As the large baby boomer population approaches age 65, gains will be fueled by greater demand for high-value skin care products designed specifically for mature skin.

Environmental fragrance goods represent a small, but growing market. Following the recession that began in late 2007, consumers are spending more time at home and are increasingly interested in enhancing their living spaces through the use of air care products.

However, while consumers are increasingly willing to experiment with new products and scents, fragrance demand will be negatively impacted by the implementation of fragrance bans in schools, churches and various workplaces.

Cyndi Wang battles cosmetic surgery rumours

TAIPEI: Taiwan singer-actress Cyndi Wang on Tuesday denied allegations that she had gotten a nose job recently, reported Taiwan media.

Tabloids claimed that Wang's features seemed to have changed after she recovered from a serious infection in March and pointed out that her nose looks better now.

"These heartless people!" Wang joked during an appearance at a press event for a Taiwan cable channel.

However, she adopted a more serious tone soon after.

"My mother read these false reports and became very angry," said Wang.

"We [celebrities] are public figures and a lot of things regarding us are widely reported, but excessive, untrue reports hurt our friends and family. Hopefully, everyone will stop making up such news."

The 28-year-old said that she only looked better because she is happier as she had finally "gotten enough sleep" while she was hospitalised for her infection, "exercised regularly and took a lot of vitamins".

In March, Wang was in the midst of shooting her upcoming idol drama when a small sore just above her lips became badly infected, causing her face to swell and her skin to break out in rashes due to her weak immune system.

She was hospitalised amidst fears that she could get disfigured but she eventually managed to pull through.

New Jersey Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Thomas Streko, Discusses How Headaches Could Be a Dental Health Problem

04.06.2011– Westfield, NJ. – April 6, 2011 – One of New Jersey’s leading cosmetic dentists, Dr. Thomas Streko, recently published a blog on his website, www.DrStreko.com titled "Suffering From Headaches? See Your Dentist!" In the blog, Dr. Streko discusses how some chronic headaches – even migraines – can be linked to dental problems you might not even know you have.

Dr. Streko writes, “Headaches are a symptom of the condition called TMJ or TMD, which occurs when your temporomandibular joint, which connects your jawbone to your skull and allows it to move around, is stressed because it is out of alignment. The reason is simple. Headaches are often caused by stress and tension – and having a jaw that is out of alignment adds stress and tension not only to your mouth, but to your head, neck, shoulders and other parts of your body as your jaw strains to correct the condition.”

“If you’ve been suffering from headaches that won’t go away, tell your dentist at your next appointment. Or better yet, schedule an appointment now, and you could be feeling better a lot sooner,” continues Dr. Streko.

India Targets $36 Billion Global Cosmetic Surgery Market

Looking for a nose job or a tummy tuck? It’s destination India. Asia’s third-largest economy is looking to further its reputation in the services sector by targeting the $36 billion global market for cosmetic medical services, or cosmetic surgery, which is growing at over 5 percent annually.

Peter Cade | Iconica | Getty Images

In the past five years, scores of Indian travel websites and entrepreneurial plastic surgeons have sprung up to use the power of the Internet to tap the "nip & tuck" or "pop for an op" market.

“We get 200 enquiries a month. Our patients are mainly from the UK, followed by U.S., Canada, Australia and African countries and the growth has been appreciable,” says Shweta Bhargav, a spokesperson for Indicure, a cosmedical tourism facilitator that reaches out to clients worldwide in 53 languages and has internationally certified surgeons on its panel.

According to a report by Global Industry Analysts, one of the world’s largest market research agencies, the U.S. is the biggest market for cosmetic procedures and is expected to reach $17.57 billion in 2015. In Europe, the market is expected to hit $2.66 billion by the same year.

According to consultants Deloitte, as many as 10 million Americans will seek medical remedies abroad by the year 2012 combining it with holidays, and India has its eyes trained on them.

Corporate hospital chains in India now have exclusive clinics focused on the cosmetic surgery market. In December 2010, India’s largest corporate healthcare group Apollo Hospital launched two exclusive cosmetic clinics in India’s southern cities of Chennai and Hyderabad. Plans are to set up six more across the country.

Chairman Dr. Prathap C Reddy said at the launch, "In the $1 trillion U.S. beauty and life enhancement market, $500 billion is with beauty shops and the rest with medical specialists. Apollo is gearing to tap that opportunity."

Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman of Narayana Hrudalaya, often known as the Henry Ford of India for his low-cost medical services model, also has plans to set up a dedicated cosmetology clinic and aesthetic dentistry clinics across the country this year.

Other hospital groups in India like Fortis, Wockhardt and Max Healthcare have tied up with top U.S. medical travel facilitators websites like Healthbase.com and MedRetreat.com to cater to cosmedical tourism.

Dr. Ayyappan Thangavel, a practicing plastic surgeon in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, says the country is seeing a huge cosmetic surgery explosion.

"My patients are housewives, students, businessmen, entertainers and they come from the U.S., U.K., Europe and Africa. About 80 percent of these foreign patients come for cosmetic reasons and only 20 percent for reconstructive procedures."

There are also a number of so-called "default patients." Like in the case of American Bill Vestal who runs an entertainment company. He came to Dr. Ayyappan for a dental implant, only to return a year later with his wife who was tempted to get a facelift given the lower cost here.

"India has all the ingredients to become a top-notch cosmetology hub. So long as it puts in place the right regulatory mechanism, the sky could be the limit," says Dr. Mohan Thomas, Medical Director at Cosmetic Institute of India (CSI) who is fashioning his cosmetic surgery practice in Mumbai on the lines of world-renowned Brazilian surgeon Ivo Pitanguy, known to be the "miracle man" behind several Hollywood stars.

There are several factors that work in India’s favor to become a front-runner in this market. First it has the expertise, around 2,500 certified plastic surgeons and their number is fast growing. A sizeable number of these doctors have been trained in the U.S., U.K. and Germany and have been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, plus they have had long careers in international markets before returning home to practice.

According to a global survey conducted by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), India was ranked fourth with 894,700 surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures in 2010 thus accounting for 5.2 per cent of all procedures done worldwide. The Indian market is 14 times larger than Thailand, known as Asia’s plastic surgery hub, according to a recent study done by IBI Partners, an Asia-focused market research agency.

A report published by the Planning Commission of India shows the huge cost advantage that India has.? In general, a plastic surgery procedure that will cost $20,000 in the U.S. and $10,000 in Britain, will be $3,500 in Thailand and only $2,000 in India, the report said.

A botox treatment that costs $500-$800 in the U.S. can cost $150-$250 in India, a facelift will be $6,500 in the U.S. and just $2,800 in India, while a liposuction costs around $2,500 in India compared with $8,000 in the U.S.

Besides cost-competitiveness India also has a unique advantage that could catapult it ahead of its peers Thailand or Singapore. It is its tradition of Ayurveda and yoga, both Indian-origin practices that are now being perceived the world-over as complementary rehabilitative practices to modern surgical procedures.

"Cosmetic surgery is not just about altering the biological clock or genetics. It is as much about feel-good, wellness and self-confidence. The experience can be enhanced in India by Ayurveda and yoga practices," say Dr. Thomas.

"Our forecasts say that in the next three years India will be the most promising market in Asia with foreign patients almost doubling — from 8 percent in 2010 to a 15 percent market share,” says Paul Benning, Head of IBI Partners in Singapore.

Unique Opportunity: Nouvelle Seeks International Distributors for Newly Expanded Compression Wear Line

Virginia Beach, VA (PRWEB) May 03, 2011

Thanks to emerging markets throughout Europe and beyond, Nouvelle, Inc. is pleased to introduce its newly-expanded post-surgical compression wear line to a broader base of international distributors.

International sales currently comprise 30-40 percent of Nouvelle’s business, and it is in the process of searching for even more global distributors of its products. “We have successfully offered high quality, American-made compression wear through select international distributors for five years now,” said Dawn Cover, president of Nouvelle. “During this time, we have sustained an unwavering commitment to ensuring the finest, most beautifully hand-crafted garments at competitive prices. In turn, our distributors have remained steadfastly loyal to our brand, which offers a distinct alternative to lower-quality, mass-produced garments.”

Three distinct markets represent the cornerstones of Nouvelle’s business:

Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery Patients.
Compression garments are specially-designed elastic apparel worn after surgical procedures and throughout recovery. They provide additional support by contouring to the body or body part. Plastic surgeons generally recommend use of compression garments following tummy tucks (abdominoplasty), liposuction, arm lifts (brachioplasty), face lifts (rhytidectomy), facial procedures, gastric bypass procedures, male mastopexy (gynecomastia treatment), breast augmentation , breast reduction, and many other types of surgical sculpture procedures. Dermatologists also may recommend compression wear for patients with lymphoma, burns, and varicose veins to help improve quality of life.

Individuals Shopping for Quality Shapewear.
Purchases of medical-grade compression garments for body sculpting, shaping and slimming continue to increase. Many consider compression garments an effective tool for contouring the body without having plastic or cosmetic surgery. While compression garments are not an alternative to losing weight or improving health, they can have a slimming effect by subtly smoothing and sculpting the appearance of the body beneath clothing. Often, people considering compression garments for non-surgical use have recently lost a great deal of weight, and may have excessive body tissue folds or conditions such as gynecomastia (male breast enlargement). Compression garments offer a safe, non-surgical alternative to stabilizing and compressing excess body tissue and skin folds.

Patients Seeking Scar Care Therapy.
Nouvelle recently added internationally-recognized ScarHeal products to its catalog as part of an ongoing commitment to superior results following cosmetic, plastic and aesthetic procedures. As noted in a recent edition of Ladies Home Journal, ScarHeal products feature an outstanding combination of ingredients designed to help calm inflammation and tame overactive collagen production in scars resulting from surgery, burns, wounds, and keloids. The line features four proven products for treating scars resulting from any trauma to the skin. Additionally, they offer an innovative, non-surgical treatment for wrinkles.

Nouvelle’s exclusive designs and products for men and women are not sold in retail stores. They may be purchased directly from approved distributors, its state-of-the-art studio in Virginia Beach, VA, or ordered online at http://www.nouvelleinc.com. Four key features differentiate its compression and shapewear products from retail offerings:

Fabric structure.
Featuring four-way stretch and memory, each garment can withstand numerous washes, endure extremely long wear times, and miraculously retain original shape and quality. All designs have been through rigorous testing and meticulous scrutiny to ensure complete comfort and enhanced efficacy of every angle, seam and compression area.

Beauty and craftsmanship.
Nouvelle designs have a reputation for beauty. The company uses only the finest fabric available, and hand-inspects each seam and stitch to ensure garments are soundly, solidly constructed.

Variety.
Nouvelle offers an endless assortment of surgical garments for every procedure, including abdominal girdles, binders, augmentation bras, and full body suits. The company also features a full line of 2nd stage garments for women and men of all shapes and sizes. All products are latex and formaldehyde-free and proudly manufactured in the USA. A seasoned design and manufacturing team is ready to create custom garments on a moment’s notice if a customer needs a specific item not typically available.

Comfort.
Realizing post-operative healing stages can be uncomfortable, Nouvelle has paid particular attention to every conceivable way the fabric touches the skin. Stitches are constructed so they are perfectly flat, so as not to aggravate incisions. Zippers and hook and eye closures are never in danger of contacting the skin. Not a single design uses metal wires or stays.

Nouvelle manufactures and distributes post-surgical compression wear, body shaping garments, and scar care products worldwide from its facility in Virginia Beach, Va. For more information about international distribution and sales, please contact Dawn Cover via email or telephone.

Modern Dental Marketing at 2011 AACD Meeting in Boston

Boston, MA (PRWEB) May 04, 2011

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) is hosting their 27th Annual Scientific Session in Boston, MA from May 18-21, 2011. Specializing in search engine marketing and website design for cosmetic dentists, CEO Keith Humes says his Rosemont Media team can be found in booth 2228 in the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center throughout the entire conference. Whether attendees have questions regarding dental Facebook marketing, online advertising, or the latest innovations in website design, Humes says he looks forward to the AACD conference and the chance to interact with leaders of the cosmetic dentistry industry.

The focus of the 27th Annual AACD Session is the Rise of Collaboration and the importance of teamwork in the modern cosmetic dentistry practice. As the modern incarnation of the traditional ad agency, Humes says Rosemont Media positions itself as an extension of each client’s cosmetic dentistry practice. He adds that this year’s focus on collaboration is especially poignant as the popularity and community-driven impact of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter continues to improve search engine marketing for cosmetic dentists.

As Humes and the entire Rosemont Media team prepare for the AACD Boston 2011 meeting, he stresses the importance of quality engagement through a diverse social media marketing campaign. “We help our clients focus on the essential components of internet marketing, beginning with how to develop a social media strategy, how to promote your practice and convert fans into patients, and how to measure the ROI of social media.” However, Humes says the success of social media ultimately relies heavily on each practice's willingness to reach out to current and potential patients through their social networks.

Explaining Sandra Bullock 's mystery lump

Celebrity with bad plastic surgery? Cosmetic doctors have many possible explanations for Sandra Bullock’s swollen right cheek.

CELEBRITY PLASTIC SURGERY GONE BAD?

Actress Sandra Bullock, 46, aroused concern and speculation recently when she appeared with a large lump on her right cheek.

She hasn’t discussed her odd appearance, which led some celebrity watchers to conclude that she was a victim of bad plastic surgery, specifically a facelift malfunction.

Speculation has ranged from a wide variety of medical problems to the suggestion that she simply was chewing a wad of nuts or gum when she unwittingly stepped into paparazzi photographers’ line of fire on March 25.

The website Awful Plastic Surgery concluded that Bullock had undergone a “threadlift,” a minimally invasive treatment in which a doctor threads barbed sutures under the skin, attaches them to tissue of the lower face and pulls it upwards.

The procedure was popular in the middle of the last decade, but its popularity declined after many doctors reported problems.

AwfulPlasticSurgery.com said, “Threadlift procedures are minimally invasive, however there can be complications when threads break. Patients are left with an uncomfortable lump that takes a while to disappear. I guess Sandra Bullock will not be seen in public for a few months.”

Whatever the reason for Bullock’s lump, cosmetic doctors’ discussion of the possible causes highlights the many ways plastic surgery can go wrong.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Fleming of Beverly Hills said that a threadlift malfunction was “one of the many possible explanations” for the lump, but he was among only a few doctors accepting that possibility.

Sandra Bullock on March 25 / Photo courtesy of Zimbio.com

“The swelling is over Ms. Bullock’s right parotid salivary gland and appears to be a salivary gland seroma,” a buildup of fluid, said plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Persky of Encino. “This can occur from needles (or ‘threads’) puncturing the parotid gland (not an intended part of the procedure). Looks like Ms. Bullock got ‘blind-sided’ by her physician. There is a reason that ‘thread-lifts’ are generally frowned down upon by the vast majority of facial plastic surgeons.”

Dermatologic surgeon Dr. David Sire of Fullerton, who did threadlifts several years ago, said he had never seen such a serious reaction to the surgery.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Terry Dubrow of Newport Beach and dermatologist Dr. Lorrie Klein of Laguna Niguel agreed.

Klein said, “A threadlift would not leave a lump like that. If it left lumps or bumps they would be small and look like pinched skin.”

Plastic surgeon and blogger Dr. Tony Youn of Michigan said he has been told Bullock was having problems with her salivary glands and was being treated by an ear, nose and throat specialist.

Youn said, “I was sent this photo by a celebrity magazine a couple weeks ago and asked to comment. They said their sources had information that she was having a problem with her parotid [salivary] glands and was being treated by a ENT. Sounds reasonable!”

Dermatologist Dr. Vince Afsahi of Tustin and Newport Beach said, “It could be a foreign-body granuloma — a type of inflammation that occurs when the body rejects a substance placed in the skin. This could be caused by anything from silicone-based fillers to other artificial substances.”

Sandra Bullock on March 31 / Photo courtesy of Zimbio.com

Plastic surgeon Dr. Edward Domanskis of Newport Beach said the lump might conceivably be a sign of a buildup of blood, lymphatic fluid, or even pus after a facial procedure — but he doubted that that was the explanation.

Many doctors said they suspect the photo was digitally altered.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Val Lambros of Newport Beach, for example, said, “99% it’s Photoshop. 1% chance of a parotid tumor infection or blockage.”

In this case, however, digital manipulation of Bullock’s image is unlikely, because so many variations of the same photo exist, shot one after another.

An even simpler explanation is also possible.? Dubrow said the March 25 photos look as though “they photographed her in the middle of a gum chew or eating peanuts.”

A March 31 photo (bottom picture above) suggests that Dubrow might be right.? This may show Bullock’s face after her mouthful of food from March 25 is long gone.

Or perhaps a small lump remains visible in the March 31 photo, as if Bullock’s swelling had started to respond to medical treatment.

In either of those cases, the next time we see Sandra Bullock, it’s likely that she once again will look like her normal, chipper self.

Plastic Surgeons Have Been Unknowingly Utilizing Stem Cell Technology for Decades

Birmingham, Alabama (PRWEB) May 04, 2011

Plastic surgeons have been using autologous fat transfer in reconstructive plastic surgery and for cosmetic surgery procedures for decades. Plastic Surgeons first began experimenting with fat transfer in the late 1980s for reconstructive plastic surgery procedures and for cosmetic rejuvenation procedures. Through the years, the system of harvesting fat from the patient and then processing it for the graft has been refined with technology and knowledge. One of the first Plastic Surgeons to explore fat transfer is Dr. Paul Howard in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. Dr. Howard has used fat for facial rejuvenation, cosmetic hand rejuvenation, lip enhancement, and to improve contour deformities as the result of trauma or birth defects. Dr. Howard refers to fat transfer as “the perfect filler.” Only recently has he been able to notice the extended benefits of fat transfer on patients who have had fat grafting. “I see patients who had fat transfer for facial rejuvenation more than 5 and 10 years ago presented with exceptional results of not only the filler, but in the quality of their skin tone, laxity, and overall appearance,” states Dr. Howard. “We used to not understand why fat grafting was so fantastic for skin tone, but now understand it is due to the presence of stem cells surrounding the fat and those stem cells are grafted alongside the fat,” he continues.

This scientific discovery of stem cells within adipose tissue has set off a frenzy in the medical community with Plastic Surgeons as the center of attention. Although embryonic stem cell research is off limits to researchers who receive federal funds, adipose stem cells open a new world to the medical community in search of vaccines and cures for a wide variety of diseases and cancer. Although the FDA regulates the biologics of adipose stem cell tissue fractions, the use of autologous fat transfer for facial rejuvenation is available and widely regarded as a more natural facial rejuvenation. Surgeons like Dr. Paul Howard who have mastered the scientific processing of adipose tissue transfer will continue to offer fat grafting as an alternative to artificial facial fillers which are temporary. “Fat is forever,” says Dr. Howard. “I often suggest to patients seeking liposuction to consider grafting their fat to their face or hands for rejuvenation.” In time, the FDA regulations will be challenged and updated to acknowledge the use of adipose tissue for harvesting stem cells to improve medical vaccines and cure diseases.

About Dr. Paul Howard

Dr. Paul S. Howard is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Howard specializes in cosmetic plastic surgery of the face and body. Dr. Howard is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In addition, he if founder of the NewFace Foundation, a 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) Non profit organization that benefits children born with facial deformities. Kilpatrick's cousin faces felony charges over Manoogian Mansion fund

Last Updated: April 28. 2011 5:02PM

Detroit— Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's cousin allegedly spent restricted foundation money on furniture, cosmetic injections, personal fitness training, relatives' debts, veterinary services and her own wedding, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said today.

Nneka Cheeks, 40, of Livonia, is to be arraigned Friday in the city's 36th District Court on racketeering charges for allegedly raiding almost $20,000 from the Manoogian Mansion Restoration Society's bank account between 2007 and 2009, Schuette announced at an afternoon press conference.

"Ms. Cheeks abused her position of trust by converting these funds for her own personal use," Schuette said. "The criminal acts of Ms. Cheeks were not an isolated event, but rather a series of events."

Schuette added that Cheeks apparently acted alone, keeping others involved with the society, "out of the loop."

"Nonprofit organizations are not to be used as a piggy bank for personal gains," Schuette said.

FBI Special Agent Rob Howard said the investigation of Cheeks was an "off-shoot" of the agency's other probes of alleged corruption during Kilpatrick's administration of City Hall. Kilpatrick, already jailed for failing to pay restitution associated with obstruction of justice and assault charges related to the text message scandal, also has been charged with federal racketeering and tax violations.

Howard said the agency received a tip about Cheeks' activities, "and we followed the money."

Cheeks previously faced a civil lawsuit over allegations she tapped the Manoogian Mansion Restoration Society's bank account. The state won a default judgment against her in September.

Cheeks is expected to turn herself in at the court Friday, to face one count of conducting a criminal enterprise, a 20 year felony, and eight counts of embezzlement from a charitable organization, punishable by up to 10 years.

Michigan State Police and FBI agents earlier this month raided Cheeks' Livonia home and her parents' home in Detroit as part of an ongoing embezzlement investigation. The Detroit home on Cherrylawn, which is registered with the state as the restoration society's address, is owned by Kilpatrick's uncle Raymond Cheeks, Nneka Cheeks' father.

Former Attorney General Mike Cox alleged that between 2007 and 2009, Nneka Cheeks raided the Manoogian Mansion Restoration Society's bank account, withdrawing more than $7,000 in cash and making nearly $17,000 in questionable payments to third parties.

Authorities listed specific spending by Cheeks of foundation funds on:

$4,025 — Cash withdrawals

$3,943 — Pioneer Credit Recovery to pay off the debt of Cheek's uncle Thomas Mathis

$3,590 — Roostertail Restaurant

$3,091 — Art Van for living and dinning room furniture delivered to Cheeks home.

$2,631 — Jewelry Factory in Livonia for a loose 1.25 carat diamond and her groom's wedding band

$2,500 — Florida-based golf academy

$1,300 — Michigan Veterinary Specialists for care of Cheek's dog "Trouble"

$1,140 — Brides Made Fit for in-home personal fitness training

$450 — Dr. Mok's Allure Medical Spa for Mesotherapy, a cosmetic injection treatment

The civil complaint asked the court to order Cheeks to return the money and pay triple the amount she diverted.

Kim Chiu denies reported cosmetic surgery

Did she or didn't she? Kim Chiu refutes reports of having nose and breast enhancement procedures

MANILA, Philippines – Popular actress Kim Chiu on Tuesday denied that she went under the knife recently to enhance her nose and her breasts.

"Wala naman po,” the 21-year-old said in an interview with abscbnnews.com. ?Chiu said she is willing to prove those spreading the rumors wrong. "Kung gusto talaga nila, i-prove ko. Kasi wala po talaga,” said she.

“Lalo na sa ilong ko, gawa-gawa [daw itong] ilong ko [kahit] hindi naman talaga, kahit silipin ninyo pa ang mga sides," she added.

Chiu went on to urge critics to stop harping on her appearance. "Huwag naman sanang manira and sana kung sabihin nila kung anuman ‘yon, sana totoo," she said.

According to Chiu, she personally doesn’t ascribe to the thought of physical appearance being the sole criteria for attractiveness.

"Hindi naman talaga dapat pisikal lang ang kagandahan. Kasi sa akin, pag mabait ka, maganda ka na," she explained. "Kapag may tiwala ka sa sarili mo na maganda ka, maganda ka na talaga. Hindi naman kailangang baguhin ang pagkatao."

That said, Chiu admitted to exerting an effort to add weight—but for work purposes.

Chiu is currently busy preparing for her role in the upcoming ABS-CBN series “Binondo Girl,” for which she said she needs to bulk up.

"Hindi ko pa puwedeng sabihin kaya ganito ang katawan ko. Basta kailangang lumaki...para siyang [the show] [Walt Disney’s] ‘Mulan.’"

To enhance her body, Chiu is hitting the gym. "Kailangan sa serye, e. Kailangang magka-muscle,” she explained.

"Nagwo-work na rin ang pagdyi-gym ko pero konti pa. Kailangang 115 pounds hanggang 120 pounds. Pero from 96 [pounds], 108 pounds na ako ngayon! Congratulations to me!"

Hair Restoration Expert Dr. Bernardino Arocha Says Houston Hairlines Point to Stronger Economy

SOURCE: Arocha Hair Restoration

Strong Demand for Cosmetic Procedures Such as Hair Transplants a Leading Indicator of Economic Strength

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - May 4, 2011) - Houston Hair Restoration expert, Dr. Bernardino Arocha of Arocha Hair Restoration (www.arochahairrestoration.com), says Houston's hairlines are indicating the rebound in the economy is for real. Dr. Arocha works with patients experiencing hair loss, offering a range of hair restoration treatments, including hair transplants, and says his practice is growing like a bouffant. Strong demand is a clear sign that men and women are feeling more confident financially and want that confidence reflected in their appearance as well.

Between 2008, when the economy hit bottom, and the end of 2010, Arocha Hair Restoration nearly doubled the number of procedures performed. This outpaces what is happening nationally as well. According to recently released statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 1.6 million Americans underwent cosmetic surgery procedures last year, an increase of nearly nine percent compared to 2009.

"There was so much uncertainty in 2008 and 2009, but now people are feeling more secure and are ready to do something for themselves," said Dr. Arocha. "Another thing we've heard from patients is that procedures such as hair restoration, which provide a youthful appearance, can make them more attractive to employers in a job market that does not typically regard age as an asset."

A 2009 study by The Cleveland Clinic charted a direct correlation between demand for cosmetic surgery and trends in the three major U.S. stock market indexes, the Dow, S&P 500 and NASDAQ.

Dr. Arocha also reports that Houston is seeing a major gender shift with a rapidly growing number of females who are experiencing hair loss choosing to restore their appearance through a hair transplant. Currently, women make up approximately 20 percent of Arocha Hair Restoration patients, and that number is growing rapidly. Nationwide, according to the ASPS, women made up approximately 30 percent of hair transplant patients, which was an increase of 20 percent from 2009. Overall, nearly 19,000 hair transplants were performed in 2010, an increase of seven percent from 2009.

About Arocha Hair Restoration
Led by Bernardino Arocha, M.D., Arocha Hair Restoration offers patients in Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth and throughout Texas and the United States a full range of hair restoration options including state-of-the-art hair transplant surgery and medications that promote hair growth. Arocha Hair Restoration uses advanced technology and a sophisticated hair restoration procedure to restore receding hairlines and crowns using the patient's native hair. Recovery is fast and results last a lifetime, are completely natural and usually undetectable. For more information, visit www.dallashairloss.com or www.arochahairrestoration.com.

Richmond Plastic Surgeon Discusses 2010 ASAPS Cosmetic Surgery Stats

According to a recently released study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), breast augmentation was once again the most commonly performed procedure in 2010 in the United States, while nonsurgical procedures performed decreased slightly from 2009 totals. Dr. Neil Zemmel says he has experienced similar findings at his Richmond, VA plastic surgery practice.

Richmond, VA (PRWEB) May 03, 2011

The most recent study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) finds 9.3 million cosmetic enhancement procedures were performed in the U. S. in 2010. While nonsurgical procedures decreased slightly from 2009 totals, the number of surgical procedures increased nearly 9%, with breast augmentation accounting for nearly 20% of the overall total. Richmond plastic surgeon Neil Zemmel, MD says he has experienced similar statistical results at his practice, as breast augmentation is his most common procedure at Richmond Aesthetic Surgery.

One reason Dr. Zemmel says he believes breast augmentation is so popular is because the procedure has one of the highest satisfaction rates among all plastic surgery procedures. He says with greater than 94% of patients reporting a highly satisfying result, including women reporting an increase in self-confidence. In order to attain a high satisfaction rate, Dr. Zemmel says he relies on his extensive experience along with the development of an individualized treatment plan to ensure his patients’ expectations are met.

Dr. Zemmel adds that patient education is extremely important, which is why he believes in the importance of conducting cosmetic surgery studies and compiling statistics similar to those in the ASAPS 2010 report. Without a correct assessment of the current state of their industry, Dr. Zemmel says plastic surgeons would not be able to provide their patients with explicit, in-depth evaluations based on the latest information and cutting-edge technology and techniques available.

About Dr. Zemmel

Neil J. Zemmel, MD earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia Medical School. He then entered the Plastic Surgery training program at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, where he spent six years studying the latest general and plastic surgery technology. Dr. Zemmel also served as Chief Resident of Plastic Surgery during his final year of training. Give brushes a spring cleaning

Most women know a thing or two about makeup remover for their face -- but what about for their tools?

Over time, large collections of powders, creams and pencils can lead to some pretty gross brushes and compacts.

Luckily, BeautySoClean has come out with a line of products to help clean these goods.

Recently, I tried their Cosmetic Sanitizer Wipes ($12.50), Cosmetic Sanitizer Mist ($12.50) and Conditioning Brush Cleaner ($20).

With a simple dab here and there, the wipes cleared the collected grime from my lipsticks and mascara wands. The mist is perfect for powder products -- I used it on my mineral foundation to get rid of any hidden bacteria.

Perhaps most important, for me at least, was the conditioning brush cleanser. I've got quite a few blushes and eyeshadows in a range of colours and consistencies, and often I'll dip the same brush in a few different products. I simply soaked them, waited a few minutes, and blotted out the product.

The best part of BeautySoClean products is how quickly and conveniently they work. There's no soapy mess to worry about.

BeautySoClean is available on the North Shore at The Bay and London Drugs.

Vampire Facelift: New Cosmetic Procedure Doesn't Suck

Vampires are everywhere these days--in movie theaters, on TV and now there is a vampire facelift procedure coming to a doctor's office near you.

Lona Dion is having the procedure done at Plano Aesthetics--the former model wants to reclaim what time has started to chip away by filling in and plumping up the face that she doesn't see anymore.

"At this point in my life I just want to look a little bit younger," Lona said. "I not quite liking what I'm seeing in the mirror these days."

Lona had blood drawn and then a nurse spun it down to separate the plasma from the blood--the plasma is then activated with a calcium product.

"A little stick right here sweetie," Dr. Jeffery Caruth said while injecting Lona. "I'll put a little around her lips to soften that line."

Dr. Caruth said patients are looking for a more natural way to fight fine lines and wrinkles.

"I think the trend is towards regenerative medicine," Dr. Caruth said. "Stem cells, platelet rich plasma and all these things which are harnessing your own body's ability to anti-age."

Critics say there are no studies to back-up the claim that injecting your own blood back into your face can take a bite out of wrinkles or not--but a friend of Lona who had the procedure is convinced it works.

Dr. Caruth said that compared synthetic facial fillers--the procedure is relatively holistic and at $1,500.00 less expensive in the long run.

"With the platelet rich plasma you are basically allowing you body to restore normal soft tissue to stimulate collagen so these results will probably last for years as opposed to months," Dr. Caruth said.

After several injections Lona got to see the early returns.

"Oh my God, good Lord," Lona giggled. "I look like a little clown."

Dr. Caruth told her the redness and swelling will go down and Lona is confident her own blood will be her fountain of youth.

"I just wanted to look like me, only better," Lona laughed. "Only younger."

Online buzz: Death by plastic surgery

The latest online buzz about cosmetic medicine:

Liposuction / Photo courtesy of BeautyTips.net

DEATH BY LIPOSUCTION
A 32-year-old mother of three died after an April 14 liposuction operation in Texas. The medical examiner says the liposuction by a board-certified plastic surgeon punctured the patient’s aorta.? Liposuction often is a safe operation, but it is not free of risks. Other liposuction-related deaths have included:

Lidvian Zelaya, 35, of Miami, who died in late 2010 after having liposuction and fat injections in her buttocks, the Orlando Sun-Sentinel reported. Her doctor has been suspended from his practice while the death is analyzed.Rohie Kah-Orukotan, 37, of Florida, who died in 2009 in connection with liposuction treatment at a Florida med spa.Donda West, 58,? the mother? of singer Kanye West, who died in Los Angeles in 2007 as she was recuperating from a breast reduction, tummy tuck and liposuction.

PLASTIC SURGERY AT A DISCOUNT
A man who is not a licensed physician as been indicted on charges of illegally performing cosmetic procedures on several women whom he examined at spas and beauty salons in New York, but operated on in the Dominican Republic. Some of the women reportedly were disfigured by the unlicensed treatments.

JEANS THAT FIGHT CELLULITE?
The latest of many unproven treatments for cellulite is a pair of blue jeans infused with green tea, which a French company says helps to fight the ripply skin? that women hate so much.

FDA EYES LIP INJECTIONS
The dermal filler Restylane is often injected to make lips plumper, but that use has never been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Now its maker, Medicis Pharmaceutical of Scottsdale, Ariz., is seeking official FDA approval for Restylane as a lip-plumper, but the FDA staff is unhappy with the study that Medicis conducted.

SEEKING SIZE 6, 4, OR 2?
A new technology is taking aim at vanity sizing, offering a true measurement of the various sizes that different clothing retailers use. But the reason stores’ labels are unreliable is that women like to purchase clothes labeled with a smaller-than-expected size. Is there really any chance that this technology will catch on — that women will be happy to find clothes sized accurately instead of sized to make them feel good about their girth?

Woman dies after back room cosmetic surgery

Carmen Olfidia Torres-Sanchez, 47, from Medellin, Colombia / AP Source: AP

A US woman died after botched buttocks enhancement surgery in the back room of a tile business by two Colombian nationals who were later arrested trying to board a plane back to that country.

Elena Caro, 42, of Las Vegas was pronounced dead on Saturday (local time) at North Vista Hospital in North Las Vegas, the Clark County coroner's office said.

Her cause of death was not immediately determined, pending toxicology tests and an investigation.

Ruben Dario Matallana-Galvas, 55, and Carmen Olfidia Torres-Sanchez, 47, were arrested for investigation of murder late on Saturday at McCarran International Airport, police said.

Ms Caro's daughter, 17-year-old Janet Villalovos, told The Associated Press that she told Mr Matallana-Galvas to take care of her mother when she dropped her off for the procedure.

"He told me everything's going to be fine, don't worry," Ms Villalovos said.

She said her mother had facial botox injections a week earlier by the same people.

Police identified Mr Matallana-Galvas as a doctor.

However, the state had no information on file on him or Ms Torres-Sanchez, said Douglas C Cooper, executive director of the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners.

Under questioning, Mr Matallana-Galvas told detectives he injected Ms Caro with a gel substance, and she walked away from his office, according to a police report.

Ms Elizabeth Flores, an aide to Mr Mattalana-Galvas, told police he called and told her something had gone wrong, and she had her husband drive him and Ms Torres-Sanchez to the airport, the police report said.

The two men were being held without bail at Clark County jail pending a court appearance tomorrow. It was not immediately clear if they had lawyers.

Ms Caro also used the name Maria Orrozco, police said.

What would mom get herself for Mother's Day if she had the chance? A new survey shows that it might be a tummy tuck or breast lift.

A survey released today from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows that if cost were not an issue, 62 percent of mothers said that they would consider a "mommy makeover" that includes procedures such as a tummy tuck, breast augmentation and/or breast lift.*

According to ASPS statistics, the number of women getting "mommy makeover" procedures is on the rise. Women had nearly 112,000 tummy tucks in 2010, up 85 percent since 2000; 90,000 breast lifts, up 70 percent since 2000; and 296,000 breast augmentations, up 39 percent since 2000.

"In the last decade we've seen women's attitudes about cosmetic surgery change. Today women are not afraid to admit that they love their children, but they wish their bodies looked the way they did before their first pregnancies. And they're not afraid to acknowledge that they may need a little help beyond a healthy diet and exercise," said ASPS President Phillip Haeck, MD.

Another trend that ASPS Member Surgeons are noticing is that the type of patient seeking "mommy makeover" plastic surgery is younger than a decade ago.

"In the past we saw a lot of women in their 50s getting these types of procedures. But today we are seeing young mothers in their 30s coming in for procedures such as tummy tucks and breast lifts. They don't want to wait years to reestablish how they used to look. They want their pre- baby bodies back now," said Dr. Haeck.

The promise of getting her body back is what led 38-year-old Dana Van Gray to undergo surgery for a tummy tuck and breast augmentation just one year after having her last child.

"I didn't like my stomach. I started noticing a muffin top and I thought - why wait? I'm young, I'm healthy and I want to look good now," Van Gray said.

"More and more patients like Dana are coming in today asking for mommy makeovers, because women now openly talk about having these procedures. It's more accepted than it was ten years ago," said Van Gray's plastic surgeon, Allen Rosen, MD, an ASPS Member Surgeon in Montclair, New Jersey.

"The techniques and the technologies are to the point where we can do these procedures in an outpatient setting in a very safe and effective fashion, minimizing the amount of downtime and pain. This appeals to our patients," said Dr. Rosen.

Van Gray says that her new and improved body not only enhanced her looks, but also her attitude. "I feel good so I can be a better mom to my kids," Van Gray said.

If you are considering a "mommy makeover" the ASPS has these tips:

- Wait at least six months to one year after having your last child to undergo "mommy makeover" procedures

- Be specific about your post-baby body goals so that your surgeon can recommend the most appropriate procedures

- To optimize the final outcome, if you are trying to lose weight, do so before undergoing "mommy makeover" procedures

- Find a surgeon who is board certified in plastic surgery

- Ask to see before and after photos of your plastic surgeon's recent work

Vegas woman dies after backroom cosmetic surgery

LAS VEGAS —

With her smooth skin and wavy, honeyed hair, Elena Caro was celebrated as a beauty by her husband and teenage daughter, who often told her that she didn't need cosmetic surgery.

But at 42, Caro wanted firmer skin and a younger figure, so she secretly booked an appointment with a medical office recommended by a close friend.

The quest for perfection might have ended her life, police said.

Caro was found walking the streets of Las Vegas in agony Saturday after buttocks enhancement surgery that authorities say was performed by two Colombian nationals in the back room of a tile business.

She was pronounced dead minutes later at North Vista Hospital in North Las Vegas. Her cause of death was not immediately determined, pending toxicology tests and an investigation.

Ruben Dario Matallana-Galvas, 55, and Carmen Olfidia Torres-Sanchez, 47, were arrested hours after the surgery for investigation of murder, police said.

The husband and wife were being held without bail at Clark County jail pending a court appearance on Tuesday. It was not immediately clear if they had lawyers.

Las Vegas homicide chief Lt. Lew Roberts said backroom clinics can be found across Sin City. But he said there hadn't been any deaths involving unlicensed physicians in at least six years.

"The tragic thing about this case is that this isn't an isolated incident of somebody going to an unlicensed alleged medical facility," he said.

Matallana-Galvas and Torres-Sanchez had purchased airplane tickets to return to their native Columbia on April 22 but were trying to catch an earlier flight at McCarran International Airport when they were arrested, police said.

Neither suspect had a license to practice medicine in Nevada, officials said. Matallana-Galvas told police he was a homeopathic doctor in Colombia.

Under questioning, he also told detectives he injected Caro with a gel substance, and she was able to walk away from his office after the procedure, according to a police report.

advertising

However, Elizabeth Flores, an aide to Matallana-Galvas, told police he had called and said something had gone wrong, and Flores had her husband drive him and his wife to the airport, the police report said.

Caro's daughter, 17-year-old Janet Villalovos, told The Associated Press that her family had begged Caro not to undergo cosmetic surgery.

However, encouraged by a friend who said she had successfully received buttocks enhancement surgery from Matallana-Galvas, Caro booked an appointment for facial Botox injections with him earlier this month.

When no complications arose, Caro quickly scheduled the buttocks surgery. She told only her daughter because she was worried that her husband, brother and sister would be too critical of the procedure and try to talk her out of it.

That morning, Villalovos said, she drove her mother to the makeshift medical office and gave Matallana-Galvas a warning.

"I told them, take care of her, please," Villalovos recalled. "He told me everything is going to be fine. Don't worry."

Villalovos watched the doctor and his wife inject one shot into her mother's buttocks. The sight made her squeamish, so she told her mother she was leaving and would return in four hours when the procedure was done. An hour later, her mother called to say everything was going well.

Later, her mother didn't answer repeated calls, Villalovos said.

When Villalovos returned to the makeshift medical office, it was locked and appeared abandoned. She asked Gilbert Estrada, the owner of Tiles and More, to unlock the door. Inside, the bed, curtains and curtain rods that had filled the room that morning were gone.

Estrada said Matallana-Galvas rented the small office two weeks ago and had said he would relocate by the end of the month.

"They were looking for a bigger place to serve more people," Estrada said in Spanish.

Caro was already dead when her daughter began searching for her, according to an arrest report. Onlookers had called emergency officials, who picked her up in an ambulance and took her to the hospital.

Roberts said police do not know how Caro ended up in the remote area but suspect she was dropped off there.

Matallana-Galvas said he had told Caro he didn't have the proper equipment to perform the procedure but did it anyway, according to the arrest report.

Nevada had no information on file on him or his wife, said Douglas C. Cooper, executive director of the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners.

Police are looking for other possible victims.

Wailing family members gathered Monday at Caro's house, where photos of her were displayed alongside a rosary and a row of candles adorned with Catholic saints.

Villalovos said she and her mother did not know Matallana-Galvas was not a licensed doctor, although his office walls did not bear any certificates, licenses or diplomas.

Villalovos said she trusted him because he treated her mother professionally and with authority.

"It was not her time to go yet," Villalovos said.
