San Antonio Cosmetic Dentist Offers Free High-Tech Screenings for Deadly Oral Cancer

Posted on: Saturday, 2 April 2011, 00:00 CDT

Every year in the United States, about 37,000 new patients are diagnosed with oral cancer – that’s about the same as the population of Del Rio. And there are about 8,000 fatalities a year – more than the entire population of Alamo Heights. In fact, within five years of diagnosis, almost half of the patients will be dead. In recognition of National Oral Cancer Awareness Month (April), San Antonio cosmetic dentist Dr. Edward Camacho, DDS, and his Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio practice will help combat the deadly disease by providing free oral cancer screenings on April 15.

San Antonio (PRWEB) April 1, 2011

Oral and pharyngeal cancers are among the most dangerous of cancers – hard to detect in the early, treatable stages, and carrying a high mortality rate.

Every year in the United States, about 37,000 new patients are diagnosed – that’s about the same as the population of Del Rio. And there are about 8,000 fatalities a year – more than the entire population of Alamo Heights. In fact, within five years of diagnosis, almost half of the patients will be dead.

This year, Dr. Edward Camacho, DDS, and his Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio practice will help combat the disease by providing free oral cancer screenings in recognition of National Oral Cancer Awareness Month, celebrated in April. The event is being coordinated with the Oral Cancer Foundation (http://oralcancerfoundation.org).

The free screenings are scheduled for Friday, April 15, 2011, from 1-4 pm at the Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio facility at 16535 Huebner, Suite 102, San Antonio, TX 78248. The practice is on the corner of Huebner and Bitters in the Valencia Village shopping center. (http://cosmeticdentistryofsa.com)

Screenings will be done using the cutting-edge Velscope? - a special painless light that can spot oral cancer in its tiny – and more treatable – early stage. This is crucial, because such tiny abnormalities are often invisible to the naked eye, and often can’t be seen by dentists and other oral health professionals using traditional white light.

"You can survive oral cancer" Dr. Camacho says, "but the key is early detection. All of my patients receive a no-charge Velscope exam. We can also test for the HPV virus (this virus is linked to oral cancer) for those in high risk groups."

Here are some other facts you need to know about oral and pharyngeal cancer, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation:

Further supporting oral cancer awareness, Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio staffers will also participate in the first San Antonio Oral Cancer Walk, sponsored by the Oral Cancer Foundation, from 8 am-noon in OP Schnabel Park in northwestern San Antonio. New Jersey Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Thomas Streko, Explains How Tooth Loss Can Be Deadly to Diabetic Patients

03.22.2011– Westfield, NJ. – March 22, 2011 – One of New Jersey’s leading cosmetic dentists, Dr. Thomas Streko, recently published an article on his website, www.DrStreko.com titled "Important Diabetic Dentistry News." In the article, Dr. Streko discusses a new study that has come out of Australia that underscores just how crucial good dental health is for patients with diabetes.

Dr. Streko writes, “According to the study, which was conducted by The George Institute for International Health in Sydney, Australia, diabetics who lose all of their teeth are twice as likely to die then diabetics in the same age group who have managed to keep the majority of their teeth.
The study covered almost 11,000 adults who were aged 55 to 88, all of them with Type 2 diabetes. And the results are, frankly, frightening. During the five years the study monitored them, twice as many diabetics without teeth died.”

“If you’re diabetic, you may worry that more extensive procedures like implant dentistry are unavailable to you. In fact as long as your diabetes is under control, a trained diabetic dentist will more than likely be able to develop an implant treatment plan that will work for you, either alone or in partnership with a specialist.
The right diabetic dentist will also be able to keep your smile as healthy and beautiful as the smile of a patient who doesn’t have diabetes – putting everything from a healthy mouth to veneers, whitening and even smile makeovers within your reach,” continues Dr. Streko.
