Breast Augmentation Most Common Procedure at Charleston Plastic Surgery Practice

More than 318,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2010, making it the most performed surgical cosmetic procedure. The latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) also finds that 62% of patients chose silicone breast implants. Charleston plastic surgeon Dr. Ram Kalus says these statistics are also reflected in the procedures he performs at his practice. “Breast augmentation is definitely the most common single procedure I now perform in my practice. We tend to see two populations of women: young women in their early twenties prior to having children, and women in the mid to late thirties after one or more pregnancies who may also need a lift procedure to correct sagging.”

Charleston, SC (PRWEB) August 11, 2011

With more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2010, the latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) finds that breast augmentation was the most popular surgical procedure. According to the same study, nearly 200,000 of the 318,000 breast augmentation procedure performed used silicone breast implants instead of saline implants. At his Charleston plastic surgery practice, Dr. Ram Kalus says his patients prefer silicone breast implants to saline at roughly the same rate. “I tell my patients that as a rule they can expect an equally pretty visual result if we use saline-filled or silicone-filled implants. The decision by the vast majority of my patients to opt for silicone over saline gets made when they hold each implant in their hands. The silicone implants simply feel more like a natural breast. The saline implant is a bit firmer and detectable to the hand.”

While speculation concerning the safety of silicone breast implants surfaced in the mid-90s, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed the safety and overall effectiveness of silicone implants after a 14-year period of extensive research. Dr. Kalus says in addition to addressing the safety concerns, the latest advancements in silicone gel also provide an improved aesthetic appearance and more natural feel. However, he adds that when performing breast augmentation in Charleston, each surgery is unique and requires an individualized approach to ensure the patient’s cosmetic enhancement expectations are met.

According to the same study from ASAPS, a majority of the U. S. population now approves of cosmetic enhancement. As popularity continues to grow, Dr. Kalus says he expects breast augmentation with silicone implants to remain one of the most popular forms of aesthetic enhancement. “I think there are a couple of reasons for the popularity of the procedure. First, after the FDA conclusion and announcement that silicone implants are entirely safe, women feel more confident and secure about seeking breast enhancement. Secondly, I try to achieve a very natural result which usually entails the use of smaller implant sizes than women are used to or expect.”

Breast Augmentation and Revision with Houston Plastic Surgeon

According to the most recent study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2010. Additionally, breast augmentation was the most popular procedure performed, accounting for over 300,000 procedures alone. As plastic surgery becomes increasingly popular and techniques more refined, Dr. Philip Straka says he regularly now performs revision breast augmentation procedures weekly at his Houston plastic surgery practice.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) June 22, 2011

The latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) shows more than half of all Americans now approves of cosmetic plastic surgery. Of the more than 9.3 million procedures performed in 2010, breast augmentation was the most popular surgical procedure. As a board-certified plastic surgeon in Houston, TX, Dr. Philip Straka says the increase in the number of procedures performed, coupled with the drive for more advanced technology and precise techniques, has led to an increase in demand for revision breast surgery.

Dr. Straka says revisional, or corrective, breast augmentation surgery is designed to improve and refine the aesthetic appearance of a previous breast enhancement procedure. Dr. Straka says he relies on his significant experience, training, and expertise in cosmetic breast enhancement to not only improve the shape and implant position, but to improve the softness of the previously augmented breast as well, which is why many patients are referred to Dr. Straka for these challenging repair operations. He says his goal when performing a revision procedure is to address the patient’s specific concerns regarding the look and feel of the their breast augmentation. Specifically, Dr. Straka says he and the patient develop realistic expectations for an improved shape, position, and feel of the breast implant, to ensure the revision procedure satisfies the patient’s aesthetic enhancement goals.

Ultimately, Dr. Straka says fostering the growth of a strong patient-doctor relationship from the initial consultation to the final stages of recovery will increase the likelihood of achieving satisfactory cosmetic enhancement results. He adds that as patients consider a cosmetic procedure of any kind, ensuring a surgeon is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is the first essential step in pursuing any procedure, especially a revision procedure as it can often present an entirely separate set of concerns. However, Dr. Straka says as cosmetic plastic surgery becomes increasingly popular, and the industry continues to advance, he expects revision breast augmentation will continue to increase as well.

Breast Augmentation... Not Just About Size!

When the topic of breast augmentation or cosmetic breast surgery is approached, many immediately conjure stripper, Vegas cocktail waitress, Heidi Montag, oversized, mountainous, cleavage-bearing breasts that defy gravity and the clothing wrapped around them. But prominent New York Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Scott Newman, who specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery, notes the majority of women who opt for cosmetic breast surgery are more interested in finding the right size for themselves rather than obtaining overpowering breasts that enter the room before their body does.

"There are many reasons women seek enhancements; centerfold boobs are a small portion," explains Dr. Newman. "Most of my patients are average women who want to look great in a bathing suit, as well as in a business suit," he added. "Other motivating factors include asymmetrical breasts, postsurgery reconstruction, postpregnancy sagging, underdevelopment and body proportioning."

Many of Dr. Newman's patients are asymmetrical, where one breast is larger or different in shape than the other, in some cases as much as a cup size in difference. For these women, simply finding a bra to fit comfortably and properly is impossible, and they are forced to add padding to create a uniform appearance in clothing. Dr. Newman's enhancement procedures bring balance and proportion to a patient's form, allowing her to feel more comfortable in and out of clothing.

Another common augmentation procedure is breast reconstruction, especially with breast cancer patients. The devastation of going through a mastectomy or double mastectomy is softened with a reconstruction procedure.

Pregnancy and nursing can have an adverse effect on a woman's breast shape and size, causing sagging and, in some cases, a change in the amount of breast tissue. These are women who simply want to return to their pre-baby size and shape.

And, for some women whose breasts are underdeveloped or disproportionate, augmentation can produce complementary body symmetry.

The latest annual report released early in February 2011, from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), of which Dr. Newman is a member, notes an increase in cosmetic surgical procedures for 2010 with breast augmentation as the No. 1 selected procedure.

Dr. Newman, of Advanced Plastic Surgery Center in New York, has performed over 4000 surgeries including 57 doctors, four of whom are Plastic Surgeons themselves. His in-depth, personalized, one-on-one consultations guide him in determining the "best" procedure for each patient.

Breast Augmentation is Most Popular Cosmetic Surgical Procedure, Notes Chicago-Area Plastic Surgeon Allan Parungao, MD

Oak Brook, IL (PRWEB) March 24, 2011

For the fifth year in a row, more American women have had breast augmentation than any other cosmetic surgical procedure. The newest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that the number of breast implant procedures performed in the U.S. in 2010 was 269,203 — a 39% increase over 2000.

“Women today have more choices than ever when it comes to enhancing the appearance of their breasts,” says Chicago-area plastic surgeon Allan Parungao, MD, FACS, author of A Woman’s Guide to Cosmetic Breast Surgery and Body Contouring.

“Since the FDA approved the newest generation of silicone gel breast implants in 2006, more and more women have been choosing this option over saline implants,” notes Dr. Parungao. Six out of 10 women who had breast augmentation in 2010 opted for silicone gel implants, according to ASPS statistics, compared to 50% in 2009.

Wendy, a 35-year-old Chicago-area woman, recently opted for silicone gel implants. “After I had my daughter in 2009, I wanted breast augmentation,” she says. “But with my job and all my workouts, I didn’t want my breasts to be so huge that people would be looking down at my chest.”

“An important part of getting natural-looking results from breast augmentation is choosing the right size and shape implants,” explains Dr. Parungao, who has Chicago-area offices in Oak Brook, Naperville and Vernon Hills, IL. “Based on Wendy’s measurements and her build, we selected implants that gave her both increased projection and the proper width for better cleavage.” Wendy went from a 34B to a 34DD.

“After getting breast implants, my breasts look so natural that I can wear regular clothes and look very presentable,” says Wendy, who does fitness modeling and swimsuit modeling as a hobby. “And if I want to up-do my breasts for a photo shoot, I can do that as well—so I have the best of both worlds.”

Achieving optimum results from breast augmentation sometimes involves changing not only the size, but the position of the breasts. “Some women, especially those who have had children, find that their breasts tend to sag over time,” says Dr. Parungao. “In these cases, we can combine breast augmentation surgery with a breast lift to counteract the effects of gravity and give the breasts a fuller, more youthful appearance.”

Recent improvements have also made recovering from breast augmentation surgery much easier. To ease patients’ post-operative discomfort, Dr. Parungao offers the On-Q pain pump at no extra charge. (Some plastic surgeons charge as much as $500 extra for the device.)

“On-Q is a simple system for delivering local anesthetic in the first few days after surgery,” Dr. Parungao explains. “It’s designed to give patients a more comfortable recovery—without narcotic side-effects such as breathing difficulties, nausea, constipation and that ‘knocked-out’ feeling.”

“I’d heard from friends who’d had breast augmentation that they’d had painful throbbing, but I had no pain in my breasts,” says Tasha, a patient who recently was treated with the On-Q pain pump after breast implant surgery.

“Every few minutes, the On-Q released the anesthetic medication,” she recalls. “I had my surgery on a Wednesday, and the pain pump was removed on Friday. It was a life-saver!”
