He maintains a longstanding commitment to the education and training of the next generation of plastic surgeons, and recently returned from the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Anti-Aging Medicine symposium held in New York. Providence, RI (PRWEB) August 09, 2011

At his Rhode Island plastic surgery practice, Dr. Patrick Sullivan discusses the latest developments in aesthetic science and facial rejuvenation, along with the need to inspire future generations of cosmetic plastic surgeons to push innovation in their industry. He recently lectured at the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Anti-Aging Medicine Symposium in New York, and focused on his approach to neck contouring and the use of volumizing agents to perform upper facial rejuvenation, such as eyelid surgery and the brow lift. Dr. Sullivan says participation in plastic surgery conferences inspires him to continue pushing the envelope in aesthetic healthcare, and adds that he hopes his participation today influences and inspires the surgeons of tomorrow to do the same.

The interactive symposium features the latest developments, trends, and procedures in the field of aesthetic surgery because APSSNY believes an open and unbiased approach to the future of the industry depends on its ability to look ahead and continue to enhance a patient’s safety and level of care.

Dr. Sullivan says participation in annual meetings is extremely important to the continued success of cosmetic enhancement because the pace at which these next generation procedures are being developed is astounding. He further emphasizes the integral role plastic surgery conferences play in the education and inspiration of future generations of cosmetic plastic surgeons. To continue to provide patients with the safest and most effective results, he adds that taking part in this innovative drive—not merely keeping up with it—is essential.

Consumers Urged to Seek Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons in Nashville

Dr. Jack Fisher, a board-certified plastic surgeon, warns that physicians without specialized surgical training can market themselves as "cosmetic surgeons,” and that consumers may be unaware of the consequences of not choosing board-certified plastic surgeons in Nashville.

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) August 10, 2011

Dr. Jack Fisher, a board-certified plastic surgeon cautions that licensed physicians without specialized surgical training can market themselves as cosmetic surgeons, potentially misleading patients seeking qualified plastic surgeons in Nashville.

"According to a recent analysis, the term 'plastic surgery' was searched on Google over 2.7 million times around the world in just one month," says Dr. Fischer. "Clearly, an increasing number of people are considering plastic surgery, and I’m concerned that in their focus on achieving their cosmetic visions, they don’t realize just how essential it is to find a board-certified plastic surgeon."

Consumers often assume that if a doctor is licensed to practice medicine, that physician is trained in various specializations, such as plastic surgery, according to Dr. Fisher. However, to achieve the best results, he recommends checking to make sure that the physician is board-certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Dr. Fisher is a distinguished member of the ABPS as well as a member of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

"For example, suppose you are considering having breast augmentation in Nashville," says Dr. Fisher. "You might do an online search for a surgeon who offers breast enhancements. My concern: a physician can describe himself as a specialist in cosmetic surgery and breast enhancement without possessing the credentials and training needed to achieve the results you desire. As a result, you may be misled into thinking that physician is fully qualified."

As an example of what can result from such situations, Dr. Fisher frequently sees patients from other practices who have developed complications with their breast implants in Nashville. In many cases, these women chose a surgeon who lacked the experience and training required for board certification. Disappointed in their results, these women then consult Dr. Fisher for breast augmentation revision.

"I recognize that most women do not want to think about breast implant revision when they are looking forward to the results from breast augmentation," says Dr. Fisher. "However, if they do not take the time needed to investigate potential surgeons to ascertain their board-certification in plastic surgery, they risk experiencing dissatisfaction with their initial surgical results, including complications."

Dr. Jack Fisher (http://www.drjackfisher.com/) is a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast enhancement, body contouring, and facial enhancement, as well as non-surgical skin care treatments. Throughout the country, Dr. Fisher is a well-known and respected surgeon. He has been invited to speak at a number of surgical conferences throughout the world, particularly on breast and aesthetic surgery. He is also an Associate Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at the prestigious Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Dr. Fisher received his medical degree from the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, completed his internships and residencies in general surgery at George Washington University Medical Center and his plastic surgery residency at Emory University Affiliated Hospital. Following his residency, he was on staff at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, from 1981 to 1986 as attending plastic surgeon.

Breast Augmentation Most Common Procedure at Charleston Plastic Surgery Practice

More than 318,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2010, making it the most performed surgical cosmetic procedure. The latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) also finds that 62% of patients chose silicone breast implants. Charleston plastic surgeon Dr. Ram Kalus says these statistics are also reflected in the procedures he performs at his practice. “Breast augmentation is definitely the most common single procedure I now perform in my practice. We tend to see two populations of women: young women in their early twenties prior to having children, and women in the mid to late thirties after one or more pregnancies who may also need a lift procedure to correct sagging.”

Charleston, SC (PRWEB) August 11, 2011

With more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2010, the latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) finds that breast augmentation was the most popular surgical procedure. According to the same study, nearly 200,000 of the 318,000 breast augmentation procedure performed used silicone breast implants instead of saline implants. At his Charleston plastic surgery practice, Dr. Ram Kalus says his patients prefer silicone breast implants to saline at roughly the same rate. “I tell my patients that as a rule they can expect an equally pretty visual result if we use saline-filled or silicone-filled implants. The decision by the vast majority of my patients to opt for silicone over saline gets made when they hold each implant in their hands. The silicone implants simply feel more like a natural breast. The saline implant is a bit firmer and detectable to the hand.”

While speculation concerning the safety of silicone breast implants surfaced in the mid-90s, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed the safety and overall effectiveness of silicone implants after a 14-year period of extensive research. Dr. Kalus says in addition to addressing the safety concerns, the latest advancements in silicone gel also provide an improved aesthetic appearance and more natural feel. However, he adds that when performing breast augmentation in Charleston, each surgery is unique and requires an individualized approach to ensure the patient’s cosmetic enhancement expectations are met.

According to the same study from ASAPS, a majority of the U. S. population now approves of cosmetic enhancement. As popularity continues to grow, Dr. Kalus says he expects breast augmentation with silicone implants to remain one of the most popular forms of aesthetic enhancement. “I think there are a couple of reasons for the popularity of the procedure. First, after the FDA conclusion and announcement that silicone implants are entirely safe, women feel more confident and secure about seeking breast enhancement. Secondly, I try to achieve a very natural result which usually entails the use of smaller implant sizes than women are used to or expect.”

About Ram Kalus, MD, FACS

Dr. Ram Kalus earned his medical degree from Boston University. He then completed his plastic surgery residency and several plastic surgery fellowships, and was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1992. Dr. Kalus is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and an active member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Breast Augmentation and Revision with Houston Plastic Surgeon

According to the most recent study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2010. Additionally, breast augmentation was the most popular procedure performed, accounting for over 300,000 procedures alone. As plastic surgery becomes increasingly popular and techniques more refined, Dr. Philip Straka says he regularly now performs revision breast augmentation procedures weekly at his Houston plastic surgery practice.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) June 22, 2011

The latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) shows more than half of all Americans now approves of cosmetic plastic surgery. Of the more than 9.3 million procedures performed in 2010, breast augmentation was the most popular surgical procedure. As a board-certified plastic surgeon in Houston, TX, Dr. Philip Straka says the increase in the number of procedures performed, coupled with the drive for more advanced technology and precise techniques, has led to an increase in demand for revision breast surgery.

Dr. Straka says revisional, or corrective, breast augmentation surgery is designed to improve and refine the aesthetic appearance of a previous breast enhancement procedure. Dr. Straka says he relies on his significant experience, training, and expertise in cosmetic breast enhancement to not only improve the shape and implant position, but to improve the softness of the previously augmented breast as well, which is why many patients are referred to Dr. Straka for these challenging repair operations. He says his goal when performing a revision procedure is to address the patient’s specific concerns regarding the look and feel of the their breast augmentation. Specifically, Dr. Straka says he and the patient develop realistic expectations for an improved shape, position, and feel of the breast implant, to ensure the revision procedure satisfies the patient’s aesthetic enhancement goals.

Ultimately, Dr. Straka says fostering the growth of a strong patient-doctor relationship from the initial consultation to the final stages of recovery will increase the likelihood of achieving satisfactory cosmetic enhancement results. He adds that as patients consider a cosmetic procedure of any kind, ensuring a surgeon is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is the first essential step in pursuing any procedure, especially a revision procedure as it can often present an entirely separate set of concerns. However, Dr. Straka says as cosmetic plastic surgery becomes increasingly popular, and the industry continues to advance, he expects revision breast augmentation will continue to increase as well.

North Valley Plastic Surgery Announces New Informational Website: CosmeticSurgeonArizona.com

North Valley Plastic Surgery along with Antal Media and Online Marketing Store introduce a definitive website for cosmetic surgery procedures and products.

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) June 03, 2011

Steven Gitt, M.D, FACS, Founder of North Valley Plastic Surgery, is pleased to invite anyone who is interested in cosmetic surgery practices and products to visit the new informational CosmeticSurgeonArizona.com website.

The site has been designed and implemented by Antal Media and Online Marketing Store to give the reader relevant information on more than 200 popular cosmetic procedures and products. Search for plastic surgery procedures like facelifts, breast surgery, tummy tucks, and liposuction procedures. Read about a variety of the latest non invasive techniques to try before opting for surgery.

Laser techniques are offered for many treatments that used to require cosmetic surgery. Now lasers can help hair grow or can remove hair forever. It can tighten skin or eliminate blemishes like birthmarks or age spots. Laser technology has taken cosmetic surgery by storm, giving patients more satisfaction with less recovery time at a sharply reduced cost from traditional surgical procedures.

Another non surgical approach to cosmetic procedures is demonstrated by the various dermal fillers or fat injections. Dermal fillers can be employed for Liquid Facelifts, which are performed with injections only, no incisions, no recovery time. Nose jobs can be performed with the use of dermal fillers, as well as lip augmentation, chin and cheek augmentation and other procedures that can be either temporary or permanent depending on the dermal filler chosen. Fat injections are often used to replace implants on the face and even the buttocks. This technique uses the patient’s own fat and “repurposes” it for use where it’s needed.

Liposuction has captured the heart and mind of America. Fat suctioned away without the bother or sweat of diet and exercise is every person’s dream when trying to lose that last 5 - 10 pounds. Now liposuction can be performed in so many variations that no body part is immune to the suction factor. With the development of Laser Lipo and tumescent lipo, incisions and recovery times got smaller and smaller. Now a patient can literally lose their midriff bulge during lunch and not be late.

It’s no surprise that all of these relatively new technologies have been applied to anti-aging campaigns for patients of all ages. Liposuction eliminates bulges, then laser technology will smooth and tighten the skin on the face, chin, tummy, thighs, or buttocks. Dermal fillers or fat injections can add volume to lift wrinkles and ease laugh lines.

Read about all these new technologies as well as cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures at the new CosmeticSurgeonArizona.com website. Call 480-447-3904 for more information about cosmetic surgery procedures and to make an appointment with a plastic surgeon for a free consultation about your cosmetic surgery objectives.

How To Prepare For The Emotional And Psychological Effects Of Plastic Surgery

Improving self-esteem is a common reason to have cosmetic surgery, but does it really deliver? Four decades of scientific studies have confirmed that the vast majority of patients are satisfied with their results. Less studied, however, are the psychological effects of those cosmetic procedures.

While people who have cosmetic surgery seek positive physical changes, they may also want more. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), attractive people are perceived as more intelligent, healthy, sociable, and dominant than the average person. People who have cosmetic surgery may be seeking to gain (or regain) those advantages.

Psychological Effects

Negative psychological effects of cosmetic surgery include depression, self-destructive behavior, and adjustment difficulties. These effects usually are temporary and occur during the healing process, before the final result of the procedure is apparent to the patient. Patients with unrealistic expectations are more likely to be dissatisfied with the final results of their cosmetic procedures.

At La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre, all their plastic surgeons spend as much time as needed during a consultation to fully explain what a procedure can and cannot correct. The consultation is an important opportunity for both patient and doctor to get to know one another and for the surgeon to understand the patient's goals.

Most patients are pleased with the outcome of their cosmetic surgery and feel better about themselves afterward. To avoid any negative psychological effects of cosmetic surgery, make sure your goals are realistic. Do your research before you consider any operation. And listen to your surgeon during your consultation.

Tips for a Positive Experience

Here are ten ways to minimize the psychological impacts of cosmetic surgery during your healing process:

1. Establish a strong support system (with friends and relatives).

2. Set up your recuperation space with everything you need, including diversions, food, water, and a telephone.

3. Stay near a bathroom while healing.

4. Keep the end result in mind.

5. Eat well, drink plenty of water, and get lots of rest.

6. Avoid alcohol.

7. Let your support team help you while you heal.

8. Follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions about medications and activity.

9. Don't judge your appearance while you're still swollen, bruised, or stitched.

10. When in doubt, call your surgeon.

Trends In Plastic Surgery Show The Growth Of Non-Surgical Procedures

Non-surgical procedures have dramatically outpaced more traditional cosmetic surgery in the past ten years. Even with plastic surgery advances, the more subtle and less costly changes offered by non-surgical products have wide appeal.

Has the downturn in the economy impacted the demand for cosmetic surgery in the US? According to Atlanta plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Feldman of Advanced Aesthetics, PC, the short answer is no. There has been steady demand for plastic surgery procedures. The industry has changed dramatically in the past ten years, however.

Non-surgical products, such as BOTOXR (FDA approved in 2002) and DysportR (FDA approved in 2009), have radically altered the plastic surgery landscape in the last decade. Non-surgical procedures are now more in demand than more traditional surgical procedures. Going by the sheer number of procedures performed, cosmetic surgeons now perform non-surgical procedures 90% of the time. By contrast, non-surgical procedures accounted for only 26% of the procedures performed in 2000.

Statistics supplied by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) confirm that the top 5 surgeries in the Southeast region are breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and facelift. Nationwide, tummy tucks (abdominoplasty) replaced facelifts in the top procedure list. The top five non-surgical procedures in the Southeast region are BOTOXR/DysportR, wrinkle fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion.

The Atlanta, Georgia, area reflects these national trends. Women compose a large majority of Atlanta plastic surgery patients, and breast augmentation is still far and away the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure requested. Non-surgical procedures, including wrinkle fillers like JuvedermR, have outpaced more extensive surgical procedures. While non-surgical procedures are less expensive and require far less healing time, the results from non-surgical procedures are more subtle, superficial, and temporary.

Drs Feldman, Gronka, and Raniere offer two options for cosmetic enhancement. They perform all surgical options at Advanced Aesthetics, PC in a modern surgicenter that combines a friendly home-like environment with a state-of-the-art medical facility. It is state-licensed and fully accredited. Advanced Aesthetics offers a full range of cosmetic surgical procedures of the face, breast, and body.

Truffles Medispa offers less intense non-surgical procedures such as Botox, Fillers, and Laser procedures for those patients looking to avoid surgery. Truffles is a deluxe Medispa offering these procedures and medical grade skin care, all under a Plastic Surgeon's expertise.

Rhode Island Plastic Surgeon on Innovative Approach to Facial Rejuvenation

Providence, RI (PRWEB) May 31, 2011

The latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) not only contains statistics concerning the number of procedures performed in the U. S. in 2010, but also highlights the growing approval of cosmetic procedures as more than half of all Americans now approve of cosmetic enhancement. After a year in which more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed, Rhode Island plastic surgeon Dr. Patrick Sullivan says the growing interest in aesthetic enhancement, especially procedures such as the facelift and liposuction, inspires him to continually pursue the latest techniques designed specifically to increase patient safety and overall effectiveness.

As a board-certified plastic surgeon in Rhode Island, Dr. Sullivan says education and innovation both play an important role in the growing acceptance of cosmetic enhancement. He adds that developing techniques the public has expressed interest in is also essential to the success of the industry. At the 2011 ASAPS meeting, Dr. Sullivan delivered a presentation entitled, “Rejuvenation of the Aging Jawline: A Comprehensive Approach,” which focuses on the combination of procedures needed to provide both men and women with an artistically appropriate, naturally-enhanced result.

Dr. Sullivan also led several courses at the ASAPS meeting. The first course focused on lower face and neck rejuvenation, which is currently a topic of interest in the plastic surgery community, according to Dr. Sullivan. The second course was designed specifically for plastic surgeons interested in the latest techniques available for lower eyelid and forehead rejuvenation. To complete his ASAPS schedule, Dr. Sullivan presented his approach to using intravenous sedation in place of general anesthesia for facial surgeries, which reduces the overall invasiveness.

Joining some of the most-respected minds in plastic surgery at events such as the 2011 ASAPS meeting is important to the continued success of the plastic surgery community, according to Dr. Sullivan. As he prepares for the 2011 American Brazilian Aesthetic Meeting, he adds maintaining a close connection to patient needs and expectations will continue to influence acceptance of cosmetic enhancement, and inspire further innovation in a field with the potential to positively impact a patient’s quality of life.

About Dr. Sullivan

Dr. Patrick K. Sullivan earned his medical degree from the Mayo Medical School, and completed surgical residencies at the University of Colorado and Brown University. He specializes in cosmetic surgery procedures of the face, neck, nose, and body, including liposuction, breast augmentation, and facial rejuvenation. Dr. Sullivan is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and is double board-certified by the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, as well as the American Board of Otolaryngology.

Breaking Down the Numbers: Trends in Plastic Surgery Show the Growth of Non-Surgical Procedures

They perform all surgical options at Advanced Aesthetics, PC (http://www.plasticsurgerycorner.com) in a modern surgicenter that combines a friendly home-like environment with a state-of-the-art medical facility. It is state-licensed and fully accredited. Advanced Aesthetics offers a full range of cosmetic surgical procedures of the face, breast, and body.

Truffles Medispa (http://www.trufflesmedispa.com) offers less intense non-surgical procedures such as Botox, Fillers, and Laser procedures for those patients looking to avoid surgery. Truffles is a deluxe Medispa offering these procedures and medical grade skin care, all under a Plastic Surgeon's expertise.

Plastic surgery not gender exclusive

Font ResizeStudy shows more men going under the knifeStephanie Forshee, Staff WriterPosted:?05/18/2011 07:06:47 PM PDT
The face behind plastic surgery is changing.

And it's looking more masculine than before.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, male patients accounted for

9 percent of cosmetic procedures performed in 2010, an increase of 2 percentage points from 2009.

Topping the list of surgical cosmetic procedures among men was nose reshaping, followed by eyelid surgery and liposuction.

Botolinum toxin type A - known as Botox - was among the most common minimally invasive procedures, along with laser hair removal and microdermabrasion - a skin treatment used to reduce lines and blemishes.

Dr. James Wells of Long Beach, a former president of the ASPS, credited the increase in large part to aging baby boomers.

"It's a group that's retiring," Wells said. "They want to look a little more youthful. They have desires for an active lifestyle, and they want to look good. They will take advantage to improve an appearance or lifestyle."

Also among the clientele, he said, are men who have gotten divorced - or are otherwise single - and are looking to get into a new relationship.

"They want to look good," Wells said.

Torrance cosmetic surgeon Dr. J. Brian Boyd said the rise in male clients is in line with a steady increase in cosmetic procedure patients in general.

"The percentage (of men) in my practice is staying roughly constant, but overall the number of men has gone up because the

amount of everyone ... has gone up," he said. "There has been a significant rise in everyone."

It's a local trend supported by national numbers.

According to the ASPS, in 2010, 13.1 million cosmetic procedures were performed, a 5 percent increase from 2009. Of those, about 1.5 million were surgical procedures and 11.6 million were minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery expects the trend to continue in 2011.

"As the economy continues to improve, demand for face-lifts and other facial rejuvenation surgery will increase," according to the ASPS website. "Non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures will also see some growth, but people who have been putting off surgery for the past few years because of the economy will be ready for the gold standard in facial rejuvenation in 2011."

This prediction is reinforced by Wells. "Any time the economy is bad, people will withhold that kind of dollars," he said. "Seeing employment figures starting to improve, this may be another enhancement."

Wells encouraged those pursuing cosmetic surgery to do their homework when it comes to choosing a plastic surgeon.

"Make sure it's an accredited facility," he said. "(Ask) if something goes wrong, what hospital will you take me to? Do you have privileges with that hospital? Do you like the physician? Is the office clean? Is the staff attentive?"

More men getting plastic surgery

The face behind plastic surgery is changing.

And it's looking more masculine than before.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, male patients accounted for 9 percent of cosmetic procedures performed in 2010, an increase of 2percent from 2009.

Topping the list of surgical cosmetic procedures among men was nose reshaping, followed by eyelid surgery and liposuction.

Botolinum toxin type A - popular brand name Botox -- was among the most common minimally invasive procedures, along with laser hair removal and microdermabrasion -- a skin treatment used to reduce lines and blemishes.

Dr. James Wells of Long Beach, a past-president of ASPS, credits the increase, in large part, to baby boomers wanting to maintain a young appearance as they age.

"It's a group that's retiring," Wells said. "They want to look a little more youthful. They have desires for an active lifestyle and they want to look good. They will take advantage to improve an appearance or lifestyle."

Also among the clientele, he said, are men who have gotten divorced -- or are otherwise single -- and are looking to get into a new relationship.

"They want to look good," Wells said.

Torrance cosmetic surgeon Dr. J. Brian Boyd said the rise in male clients is in line with a steady increase in cosmetic procedure patients in general.

"The percentage (of men) in my practice is staying roughly constant, but overall the

number of men has gone up, because the amount of everyone ... has gone up," he said. "There has been a significant rise in everyone."

It's a local trend supported by national numbers.

According to the ASPS, in 2010, 13.1 million cosmetic procedures were performed, a 5 percent increase from 2009. Of those, 1.6 million were surgical procedures and 11.6 million were minimally invasive cosmetic procedures.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery expects the trend to continue in 2011.

"As the economy continues to improve, demand for face-lifts and other facial rejuvenation surgery will increase," forecasts the ASAPS website.

Is the staff attentive?

"Don't be in a big hurry," he said. "Remember, consultations are two-way streets."

He also discourages online bidding for a plastic surgeon. Although he feels that many doctors online are qualified, there is a possibility some are not.

"Don't let the consultation fee keep you from getting a second opinion," Dr. Wells said. "Shopping price is not unimportant but know what you're doing."

Along with concerns of choosing a doctor come the natural worries of whether to have the procedures done altogether.

"I think a lot of people are concerned depending on what they're having done," said Dr. Boyd. "People having eyelid surgery are worried about having it overdone or even losing their vision, which is extremely rare."

Dr. Boyd feels that patients find more comfort in the minimally-invasive procedures. "People are attracted to minimally-invasive procedures because they perceive there are less risks," he said. "Most of them are temporary. If they don't like the results, they can wait it out."

Plastic Surgeons Have Been Unknowingly Utilizing Stem Cell Technology for Decades

Birmingham, Alabama (PRWEB) May 04, 2011

Plastic surgeons have been using autologous fat transfer in reconstructive plastic surgery and for cosmetic surgery procedures for decades. Plastic Surgeons first began experimenting with fat transfer in the late 1980s for reconstructive plastic surgery procedures and for cosmetic rejuvenation procedures. Through the years, the system of harvesting fat from the patient and then processing it for the graft has been refined with technology and knowledge. One of the first Plastic Surgeons to explore fat transfer is Dr. Paul Howard in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. Dr. Howard has used fat for facial rejuvenation, cosmetic hand rejuvenation, lip enhancement, and to improve contour deformities as the result of trauma or birth defects. Dr. Howard refers to fat transfer as “the perfect filler.” Only recently has he been able to notice the extended benefits of fat transfer on patients who have had fat grafting. “I see patients who had fat transfer for facial rejuvenation more than 5 and 10 years ago presented with exceptional results of not only the filler, but in the quality of their skin tone, laxity, and overall appearance,” states Dr. Howard. “We used to not understand why fat grafting was so fantastic for skin tone, but now understand it is due to the presence of stem cells surrounding the fat and those stem cells are grafted alongside the fat,” he continues.

This scientific discovery of stem cells within adipose tissue has set off a frenzy in the medical community with Plastic Surgeons as the center of attention. Although embryonic stem cell research is off limits to researchers who receive federal funds, adipose stem cells open a new world to the medical community in search of vaccines and cures for a wide variety of diseases and cancer. Although the FDA regulates the biologics of adipose stem cell tissue fractions, the use of autologous fat transfer for facial rejuvenation is available and widely regarded as a more natural facial rejuvenation. Surgeons like Dr. Paul Howard who have mastered the scientific processing of adipose tissue transfer will continue to offer fat grafting as an alternative to artificial facial fillers which are temporary. “Fat is forever,” says Dr. Howard. “I often suggest to patients seeking liposuction to consider grafting their fat to their face or hands for rejuvenation.” In time, the FDA regulations will be challenged and updated to acknowledge the use of adipose tissue for harvesting stem cells to improve medical vaccines and cure diseases.

Richmond Plastic Surgeon Discusses 2010 ASAPS Cosmetic Surgery Stats

According to a recently released study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), breast augmentation was once again the most commonly performed procedure in 2010 in the United States, while nonsurgical procedures performed decreased slightly from 2009 totals. Dr. Neil Zemmel says he has experienced similar findings at his Richmond, VA plastic surgery practice.

Richmond, VA (PRWEB) May 03, 2011

The most recent study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) finds 9.3 million cosmetic enhancement procedures were performed in the U. S. in 2010. While nonsurgical procedures decreased slightly from 2009 totals, the number of surgical procedures increased nearly 9%, with breast augmentation accounting for nearly 20% of the overall total. Richmond plastic surgeon Neil Zemmel, MD says he has experienced similar statistical results at his practice, as breast augmentation is his most common procedure at Richmond Aesthetic Surgery.

One reason Dr. Zemmel says he believes breast augmentation is so popular is because the procedure has one of the highest satisfaction rates among all plastic surgery procedures. He says with greater than 94% of patients reporting a highly satisfying result, including women reporting an increase in self-confidence. In order to attain a high satisfaction rate, Dr. Zemmel says he relies on his extensive experience along with the development of an individualized treatment plan to ensure his patients’ expectations are met.

Dr. Zemmel adds that patient education is extremely important, which is why he believes in the importance of conducting cosmetic surgery studies and compiling statistics similar to those in the ASAPS 2010 report. Without a correct assessment of the current state of their industry, Dr. Zemmel says plastic surgeons would not be able to provide their patients with explicit, in-depth evaluations based on the latest information and cutting-edge technology and techniques available.

About Dr. Zemmel

Neil J. Zemmel, MD earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia Medical School. He then entered the Plastic Surgery training program at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, where he spent six years studying the latest general and plastic surgery technology. Dr. Zemmel also served as Chief Resident of Plastic Surgery during his final year of training. He has participated in medical missions with Operation Kids, which travels annually to Guatemala to help children in need of cleft palate, cleft lip, and burn reconstruction procedures. Dr. Zemmel is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons; he has also published articles regularly in a range of medical journals, and has lectured on a wide range of topics in the cosmetic enhancement industry.

Online buzz: Death by plastic surgery

The latest online buzz about cosmetic medicine:

Liposuction / Photo courtesy of BeautyTips.net

DEATH BY LIPOSUCTION
A 32-year-old mother of three died after an April 14 liposuction operation in Texas. The medical examiner says the liposuction by a board-certified plastic surgeon punctured the patient’s aorta.? Liposuction often is a safe operation, but it is not free of risks. Other liposuction-related deaths have included:

Lidvian Zelaya, 35, of Miami, who died in late 2010 after having liposuction and fat injections in her buttocks, the Orlando Sun-Sentinel reported. Her doctor has been suspended from his practice while the death is analyzed.Rohie Kah-Orukotan, 37, of Florida, who died in 2009 in connection with liposuction treatment at a Florida med spa.Donda West, 58,? the mother? of singer Kanye West, who died in Los Angeles in 2007 as she was recuperating from a breast reduction, tummy tuck and liposuction.

PLASTIC SURGERY AT A DISCOUNT
A man who is not a licensed physician as been indicted on charges of illegally performing cosmetic procedures on several women whom he examined at spas and beauty salons in New York, but operated on in the Dominican Republic. Some of the women reportedly were disfigured by the unlicensed treatments.

JEANS THAT FIGHT CELLULITE?
The latest of many unproven treatments for cellulite is a pair of blue jeans infused with green tea, which a French company says helps to fight the ripply skin? that women hate so much.

FDA EYES LIP INJECTIONS
The dermal filler Restylane is often injected to make lips plumper, but that use has never been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Now its maker, Medicis Pharmaceutical of Scottsdale, Ariz., is seeking official FDA approval for Restylane as a lip-plumper, but the FDA staff is unhappy with the study that Medicis conducted.

SEEKING SIZE 6, 4, OR 2?
A new technology is taking aim at vanity sizing, offering a true measurement of the various sizes that different clothing retailers use. But the reason stores’ labels are unreliable is that women like to purchase clothes labeled with a smaller-than-expected size. Is there really any chance that this technology will catch on — that women will be happy to find clothes sized accurately instead of sized to make them feel good about their girth?

Murphy Plastic Surgery Reacts to Recent Trends in Anesthesia Techniques and Safety in Cosmetic Surgery

Denver, CO (PRWEB) April 25, 2011

Despite all the talk of “Awake Surgery” by other plastic surgeons lately, Dr. Murphy remains true to the standard anesthesia methods that are the safest for his Denver cosmetic surgery practice. Nearly all procedures performed by Dr. Murphy will utilize both local anesthesia and sedation in his AAASF accredited in-office operating room. When it comes to larger invasive procedures like tummy tucks general anesthesia is required.

Many cosmetic surgery offices have been making quite a splash about “Awake Surgery”. Physicians promoting the "Awake" technique claim it is more advanced and safer than traditional anesthesia and that traditional deep anesthesia is used by doctors only out of convenience. With these claims they also report that high doses of local anesthesia given to their clients are safe for the patient. Dr. Murphy wants patients to know that in fact, often times the "awake" methods are used by physicians because they have limited access to hospital privileges to perform the invasive surgeries under the anesthesia they require, and that most patients prefer the option of sedation.

Dr. Murphy reminds us that many of the assumptions made about “Awake Surgery” simply are not true. Established surgeons rely upon a combination of techniques and will use the most appropriate option for the procedure. This assures the comfort of the patient while avoiding the possibility of adverse reactions to the high levels of local anesthesia required if sedation were not used. Most cosmetic surgeons promoting "Awake Surgery" simply lack the hospital privileges required to do the type of heavy anesthesia that is best for invasive surgeries.

Patients report great satisfaction with the anesthesia techniques used by Dr. Murphy for their Denver plastic surgery and are most often happy to have sedation. “I am feeling absolutely wonderful!! My recovery has been quick. I owe all of that to you all. You have a great team work. Thank you for making me beautiful and so very happy.” reports one patient whom had general anesthesia for an abdominoplasty procedure.

Dr. Murphy prefers to keep patients safe and keep the grueling details of the surgery out of the patient’s memory. Local with sedation and general anesthesia remain as Dr. Murphy’s assurance that all of his patients are always safe and comfortable. Dr. Murphy’s Denver cosmetic surgery office values safety over all else.

About Murphy Plastic Surgery:
After completing medical school and a general surgery residency at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Dr. Murphy completed his plastic surgery residency in Boston at the Lahey Clinic, a surgical clinic associated with Harvard University. Dr. Murphy officially became a cosmetic surgeon Denver in 1994 and opened his current practice at the Swedish Medical Center in 1996. He is the Chief of Plastic Surgery at Swedish Medical Center and has been featured in 5280 Magazine and on Denver’s FOX 31 news. Thus far, Dr. Murphy has done thousands of plastic surgery procedures, including Denver breast augmentation.
