Richmond Plastic Surgeon Discusses 2010 ASAPS Cosmetic Surgery Stats

According to a recently released study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), breast augmentation was once again the most commonly performed procedure in 2010 in the United States, while nonsurgical procedures performed decreased slightly from 2009 totals. Dr. Neil Zemmel says he has experienced similar findings at his Richmond, VA plastic surgery practice.

Richmond, VA (PRWEB) May 03, 2011

The most recent study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) finds 9.3 million cosmetic enhancement procedures were performed in the U. S. in 2010. While nonsurgical procedures decreased slightly from 2009 totals, the number of surgical procedures increased nearly 9%, with breast augmentation accounting for nearly 20% of the overall total. Richmond plastic surgeon Neil Zemmel, MD says he has experienced similar statistical results at his practice, as breast augmentation is his most common procedure at Richmond Aesthetic Surgery.

One reason Dr. Zemmel says he believes breast augmentation is so popular is because the procedure has one of the highest satisfaction rates among all plastic surgery procedures. He says with greater than 94% of patients reporting a highly satisfying result, including women reporting an increase in self-confidence. In order to attain a high satisfaction rate, Dr. Zemmel says he relies on his extensive experience along with the development of an individualized treatment plan to ensure his patients’ expectations are met.

Dr. Zemmel adds that patient education is extremely important, which is why he believes in the importance of conducting cosmetic surgery studies and compiling statistics similar to those in the ASAPS 2010 report. Without a correct assessment of the current state of their industry, Dr. Zemmel says plastic surgeons would not be able to provide their patients with explicit, in-depth evaluations based on the latest information and cutting-edge technology and techniques available.

About Dr. Zemmel

Neil J. Zemmel, MD earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia Medical School. He then entered the Plastic Surgery training program at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, where he spent six years studying the latest general and plastic surgery technology. Dr. Zemmel also served as Chief Resident of Plastic Surgery during his final year of training. He has participated in medical missions with Operation Kids, which travels annually to Guatemala to help children in need of cleft palate, cleft lip, and burn reconstruction procedures. Dr. Zemmel is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons; he has also published articles regularly in a range of medical journals, and has lectured on a wide range of topics in the cosmetic enhancement industry.

Top CT Board-Certified Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Robert Langdon Appears on WTNH CT Style to Discuss Advanced Age-Defying ...

Robert Langdon, MD, Board Certified Cosmetic Surgeon and Dermatologist, recently appeared on WTNH’s “CT Style” to discuss some of the innovative laser services available at The Langdon Center in Guilford, CT. Dr. Langdon’s appearance focused on how BBL Photo Facials and SkinTyteTM Laser Skin Tightening can address both pigment and texture problems, respectively, often in as little as one treatment.

Guilford, CT (PRWEB) April 26, 2011

Dr. Robert Langdon, Medical Director at The Langdon Center and noted author of Understanding Cosmetic Laser Surgery, stopped by WTNH’s popular broadcast television show, “CT Style” on March 10th, 2011 to address how men and women can reduce both the pigment and texture issues that result from sun damage and aging. To address these problems, Dr. Langdon recommended his state-of-the-art cosmetic laser services, specifically BBL Photo Facials and SkinTyteTM Laser Skin Tightening.

“There are several causes of facial aging and sun damage is a major one because it affects the color of the skin as well as the texture.” says Dr. Langdon, “Not everyone has the time or inclination to go through a surgical procedure; we can actually do quite a lot with these non-invasive laser treatments.”

For those who are bothered by facial spider veins, brown spots, age spots, rosacea and general redness, treatment with Broad Band Light (intense pulsed light), a laser-like device, can gently yet dramatically erase these blemishes, leaving the face and neck looking younger and more even toned.

Dr. Langdon also addressed the issue of skin laxity, wrinkles and other texture problems, advocating SkinTyteTM Laser Skin Tightening. Treatment with SkinTyteTM, an infrared light source, can tighten sagging or drooping skin that has resulted from sun exposure, gravity, fluctuations in weight or simply as a part of the aging process.

Both BBL Photo Facials and SkinTyteTM Laser Skin Tightening are quick in-office procedures at The Langdon Center, but provide Dr. Langdon’s clients with the dramatic, age-defying results that they seek - no incisions are necessary!

For a complimentary consultation or for more information on BBL Photo Facials, SkinTyteTM Laser Skin Tightening or any of the innovative cosmetic laser services offered at The Langdon Center, call (203) 453-8625.

Schenectady Area Plastic Surgeon Reveals Most Popular Non-Surgical Treatments

Posted on: Monday, 25 April 2011, 00:00 CDT

Serving patients from Glens Falls, Schenectady and Saratoga Springs with BOTOXR Cosmetic and related treatments, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Juan Garcia explains the recent rise in non-surgical skin care at his practice.

Glens Falls, New York (PRWEB) April 23, 2011

For the last several years, BOTOXR Cosmetic has become increasingly popular. Board-certified Schenectady area plastic surgeon Dr. Juan Garcia (http://www.drgarciaplasticsurgery.com) attributes that popularity to increased awareness of the benefits and value of such non-surgical treatments.

“I’ve always been a proponent of minimally invasive techniques, so it has been easy for me to understand the popularity of treatments like BOTOX,” says Dr. Garcia. “Recently, I’ve seen these already in-demand non-surgical procedures requested even more at my practice. I was interested in understanding the factors behind this growth and took a look at 2010 plastic surgery statistics to learn more.”

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) tracks yearly statistics about plastic surgery. Although 2010 was a tough year for the economy, the ASPS reports that the total number of cosmetic procedures was increased from the 2009 figure, with minimally-invasive procedures up 5%. BOTOX remained at the top of this list (as it has for many years), and was up 12% from 2009. Soft tissue fillers, IPL treatments, and laser hair removal also became more popular in 2010.

"When I look at these 2010 statistics, I see them reflected in my own practice near Saratoga Springs. BOTOX, fillers, and laser procedures provide a valuable combination of effectiveness with minimal downtime, discomfort, and expense," says Dr. Garcia. "These medical spa procedures can be used to achieve a variety of goals – reduction of lines and wrinkles, skin rejuvenation, hair removal, vein treatment, and much more. For my smart, savvy, and on-the-go patients it’s no surprise these procedures are so popular."

Although Dr. Garcia emphasizes the benefits of medical spa procedures, he’s careful to clarify that they cannot do what surgery can do. He points out that the main drawback of non-surgical procedures is that the results achieved are not as dramatic as the results that can be achieved through surgery. In addition, medical spa procedures often provide only temporary results. Patients usually need to return for a series of treatments and for maintenance procedures.

Dr. Garcia also notes that the safety and efficacy of medical spa procedures are only ensured if people select a qualified provider. The patients who choose his practice do so because they know he has the requisite training and experience.

"I have the utmost respect for the people who visit me for plastic surgery near Albany," Dr. Garcia says. "I give them the facts they need about their options, answer their questions thoroughly, and trust them to select the procedure that makes the most sense for their goals. More and more, they are selecting non-surgical procedures. I expect this trend to continue and look forward to expanding my menu of medical spa services. "

Juan C. Garcia, MD, FACS (http://www.drgarciaplasticsurgery.com) is medical director of Garcia Plastic Surgery, serving Glens Falls, Saratoga Springs, Schenectady, and Albany. Plastic surgery offered at the practice includes breast augmentation, tummy tuck, liposuction, and facelift. Dr. Garcia earned his M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and completed a decade of surgical training before entering private practice. He is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He has earned the 2011 Platinum Elite designation for member physicians, the highest status offered by the forum. According to RealSelf.com: "Doctors at the Platinum Level are the most active and dedicated members of the RealSelf.com community. They share their knowledge by frequently posting photos and answering questions."

RealSelf.com is one of the web's largest online communities, dedicated entirely to sharing information about cosmetic treatments. Millions of visitors frequent the site for unbiased information on treatments ranging from plastic surgery to laser vision correction to cosmetic dentistry. "I am very proud to be a distinguished member of this online community," says Dr. Mosher. "I find that the principles behind RealSelf.com align well with my personal philosophy of being very open and informative with my patients. Real questions deserve real answers. "

Dr. Mosher serves as a physician advisor on Realself.com, providing informative answers to questions about all aspects of plastic surgery. "I try to be as straightforward and thorough as I can when I post responses to patient questions. Of course, I can't be as thorough in an online post as I am in a consultation. For example, when I discuss breast augmentation and implants at my Vancouver area practice, I can take much more time, and I can actually show the woman her options. Every patient is unique and requires a personalized approach in order to achieve the best results."

Dr. Mosher sees tremendous value in helping patients and potential patients through this forum. "Sometimes the posts are from someone who just had surgery and has questions about his or her recovery. In other cases, the questions come from women or men considering a surgical or nonsurgical treatment. I feel that, as a Royal College certified plastic surgeon, I have an obligation to help these people by providing credible answers." As a physician at the Platinum Level, Dr. Mosher has proven to be one of the most responsive of RealSelf.com's doctor members.

With the boom in the cosmetic industry, there is no shortage of information on the web about cosmetic treatments. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there, according to Dr. Mosher "Through RealSelf.com, I can help to dispel the myths and establish realistic expectations for procedures and recovery," says Dr. Mosher. RealSelf.com also has the endorsement of several prestigious plastic surgery societies, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Canadian Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, in which Dr. Mosher holds active membership.

Dr. Mathew Mosher (http://www.drmosher.com), founder and director of Your Esthetic Solutions (YES) Medspa and Cosmetic Surgery Centre, is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. His training includes a prestigious fellowship in Aesthetic Surgery under internationally acclaimed surgeon Dr. B.F. Connell in Southern California, and additional training in Toronto, Dallas, and Honolulu. At his Vancouver area cosmetic surgery centre, Dr. Mosher specializes in advanced techniques in cosmetic surgery, as well as state-of-the-art nonsurgical options. Due to the diversity of treatments offered at his practice, patients have the freedom to choose the procedure or procedures that work best for their needs and lifestyle.

Atlanta Plastic Surgeon Celebrates Nineteen Years in Practice with Open House

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 21, 2011

Over 100 friends and previous patients will gather next Thursday to celebrate 19 years of practice in cosmetic and plastic surgery. The event is slated to include a wine tasting, passed hor d’oeuvres, live music, gift bags, and drawings for special giveaways.

Following a year-long fellowship at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital in New York City, Dr. John LeRoy returned to Atlanta where he started his own cosmetic and plastic surgery practice. Nineteen years later, thanks to the unwavering support of his longtime patient base, Dr. LeRoy would like to share this milestone with those who made it possible.

Nineteen years of practice has allowed Dr. LeRoy the opportunity to implement an array of cosmetic surgery technologies and techniques, and most importantly, surgical experience. In 1997, LeRoy used his surgical skill and the feedback from his facelift patients to develop the original Band Aid Facelift followed by Band Aid Liposuction, and most recently, Band Aid Tummy Tuck. Dr. LeRoy uses these techniques, performed in-office with gentle numbing, to make patient’s look up to ten years younger.

Dr. LeRoy attributes much of his success to time and surgical discretion sharing, “I always try to impart the importance of personalized care to my patients. I know that cosmetic surgery is a very personal, thoughtful decision that can have major effects on an individual’s life. I like to approach surgery as a team—the patient and myself. I want them to know that I want to enhance a person’s natural appearance, not change who they are.”

Admission to Dr. John LeRoy’s open house is free of charge. Those who wish to attend can RSVP by calling (770) 447-1114 or email drjleroy(at)gmail(dot)com. Dr. LeRoy’s practice is located at 5673 Peachtree Dunwoody Rd., NE Suite 375 in Atlanta, GA 30342.

Plastic surgery worth a billion: surgeon

AAP

Cosmetic procedures in Australia, including breast augmentation and liposuction, is now worth about $1 billion a year, a conference of surgeons has been told.

The annual Cosmetex conference, run by the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery (ACCS), opened in Hobart on Thursday featuring about 700 Australian and international doctors.

ACCS president Russell Knudsen said the global downturn had not adversely affected the Australian industry.

"Demand for cosmetic medical procedures has continued to rise with college member practices reporting increases of 10-20 per cent over the last 12 months," Dr Knudsen said.

"When you consider the number of cosmetic procedures performed, and the number of take-home anti-ageing products consumed, it is reasonable to estimate that Australians now spend as much as $1 billion annually on appearance medicine."

Dr Knudsen said there were around 16,000 breast augmentations performed in the last year and 15,000 liposuction procedures.

The Cosmetex conference runs until Saturday.

Breast Augmentation is Most Popular Cosmetic Surgical Procedure, Notes Chicago-Area Plastic Surgeon Allan Parungao, MD

Oak Brook, IL (PRWEB) March 24, 2011

For the fifth year in a row, more American women have had breast augmentation than any other cosmetic surgical procedure. The newest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that the number of breast implant procedures performed in the U.S. in 2010 was 269,203 — a 39% increase over 2000.

“Women today have more choices than ever when it comes to enhancing the appearance of their breasts,” says Chicago-area plastic surgeon Allan Parungao, MD, FACS, author of A Woman’s Guide to Cosmetic Breast Surgery and Body Contouring.

“Since the FDA approved the newest generation of silicone gel breast implants in 2006, more and more women have been choosing this option over saline implants,” notes Dr. Parungao. Six out of 10 women who had breast augmentation in 2010 opted for silicone gel implants, according to ASPS statistics, compared to 50% in 2009.

Wendy, a 35-year-old Chicago-area woman, recently opted for silicone gel implants. “After I had my daughter in 2009, I wanted breast augmentation,” she says. “But with my job and all my workouts, I didn’t want my breasts to be so huge that people would be looking down at my chest.”

“An important part of getting natural-looking results from breast augmentation is choosing the right size and shape implants,” explains Dr. Parungao, who has Chicago-area offices in Oak Brook, Naperville and Vernon Hills, IL. “Based on Wendy’s measurements and her build, we selected implants that gave her both increased projection and the proper width for better cleavage.” Wendy went from a 34B to a 34DD.

“After getting breast implants, my breasts look so natural that I can wear regular clothes and look very presentable,” says Wendy, who does fitness modeling and swimsuit modeling as a hobby. “And if I want to up-do my breasts for a photo shoot, I can do that as well—so I have the best of both worlds.”

Achieving optimum results from breast augmentation sometimes involves changing not only the size, but the position of the breasts. “Some women, especially those who have had children, find that their breasts tend to sag over time,” says Dr. Parungao. “In these cases, we can combine breast augmentation surgery with a breast lift to counteract the effects of gravity and give the breasts a fuller, more youthful appearance.”

Recent improvements have also made recovering from breast augmentation surgery much easier. To ease patients’ post-operative discomfort, Dr. Parungao offers the On-Q pain pump at no extra charge. (Some plastic surgeons charge as much as $500 extra for the device.)

“On-Q is a simple system for delivering local anesthetic in the first few days after surgery,” Dr. Parungao explains. “It’s designed to give patients a more comfortable recovery—without narcotic side-effects such as breathing difficulties, nausea, constipation and that ‘knocked-out’ feeling.”

“I’d heard from friends who’d had breast augmentation that they’d had painful throbbing, but I had no pain in my breasts,” says Tasha, a patient who recently was treated with the On-Q pain pump after breast implant surgery.

Plastic Surgeon Says He Operated on Gadhafi

It was well past midnight when the Brazilian surgeon says he was escorted deep inside a bunker in the Libyan capital.

His assignment: to shave years off Moammar Gadhafi's appearance by removing fat from his belly and injecting it into his wrinkled face. The Libyan leader also got hair plugs.

"He told me that he had been in power for 25 years at that time, and that he did not want the young people of his nation to see him as an old man," Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro recalled. "I recommended a facelift, but he refused."

The secretive four-hour procedure in 1995 was done, at Gadhafi's insistence, with local anesthesia because he wanted to remain alert. Midway through, the Libyan leader stopped to have a hamburger.

Gadhafi was worried a facelift would be too noticeable, so he opted for the less radical procedure, the plastic surgeon told The Associated Press.

"I warned Gadhafi that the effects of the operation I performed would last for about five years, that it had an expiration date after which the skin would sag and the wrinkles would reappear," Ribeiro said.

"He said he would call me if he needed me to come back," and about five years ago there was such a request, but Ribeiro had a family obligation. "They never called me again," he said.

At the time of the surgery, Gadhafi was 53, but Ribeiro said he looked at least 10 years older. A photo taken at the time shows the smiling doctor posing next to the Libyan leader, who wore a white suit, floral shirt and had pronounced wrinkles crisscrossing his face and neck.

After the procedure, "he looked like a 45-year-old man," the doctor said.

Ribeiro insists he is speaking out now only to provide insight into a man about whom little is known, and certainly not to boast.

"Gadhafi is not looking very good these days," said Ribeiro, noting that the 68-year-old leader has appeared jowly in recent appearances, his skin puffy, loose and deeply creased. "To let potential patients know that I operated on him would be counterproductive."

Liberate Cosmetic Surgery: New Survey Reveals 30% of Women NEVER Saw Their Cosmetic Surgeon During Treatment

LONDON, March 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- With the recent deaths following botched cosmetic surgery abroad of 21 year old Claudia Adeseye Aderotimi and former Miss Argentina Solange Magnano, mother of two in Buenos Aires, women still appear to put price above safety.

A new survey conducted by Liberate, the UK’s largest network of BAAPS* and/or BAPRAS**-accredited cosmetic surgeons, clearly shows the need for women to be better informed about what can go wrong with cosmetic surgery and the importance of knowing the qualifications and experience of their surgeon, to help them make an informed decision.

Liberate, which has over 60 locations across the UK, surveyed 3000 women between the ages of 18-34 and found that 30% of women had undergone cosmetic surgery with breast augmentation ("boob job") being the most popular procedure (28%) followed by Nose (17%) eyes (11%) and Liposuction/tummy tuck (15%). However, the survey confirmed that many women do not receive the service they deserve from their cosmetic surgery provider. Even though 74% felt it was important to know and see their surgeon throughout the course of treatment, the reality was that 30% of women who had surgery NEVER saw their surgeon.

The Liberate survey also highlights the need for women to be better informed of the dangers of cosmetic surgery abroad and in the UK. A staggering 40% admitted that they would consider having surgery abroad if it was cheaper and half the women surveyed would have cosmetic surgery if cost was no object with 17% prepared to take out a loan to cover this.

Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon James Murphy, a founder member of Liberate, said:

"The new survey highlights the fact that although people claim safety is the most important decision when considering cosmetic surgery, many will still be influenced by price regardless of the physical cost. Cosmetic surgery is a medical surgical procedure and it should be treated as such."

Without the tools needed to make responsible choices cosmetic surgery can end up costing people financially, physically and psychologically, Liberate aims to give people the power to choose, providing them with a new and safer approach to cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg, Cosmetic Surgeon, Offers Unique Laser Treatments for Total Skin Rejuvenation

Woodbury, NY (PRWEB) March 24, 2011

Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D., with offices in Woodbury, NY and Park Ave, NYC, is one of the first cosmetic surgeons in New York to offer patients a new, same-day, combination approach to laser skin resurfacing. This FDA approved, combination approach is the 1st of its kind from the company that invented and patented micro-fractional laser technology (Palomar Medical Technologies, Inc.). Using a combination of micro-fractional laser technologies allows for the optimization and customization of a complete skin rejuvenation regimen for each patient, maximizing client aesthetic outcomes, providing faster healing and reducing social downtime.????Combination micro-fractional laser skin resurfacing is the perfect choice for the treatment of wrinkles, acne and surgical scars, melasma, striae, unwanted textural irregularities, crow's feet, blotchy skin and more, on virtually any trouble spot on the body - face, neck, chest, arms, legs.

"Skin imperfections on the face and body can detract from a person’s self-image, and can make you look older. Using a unique combination of fractional laser technologies represents a great advancement in aesthetics because it helps patients look and feel their best without having to undergo invasive surgical procedures with significant recovery time,” said Dr. Stephen Greenberg, a leading Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon. Fractional laser skin resurfacing treatments from Dr. Greenberg use the most advanced laser technology to target skin imperfections without harming surrounding tissue. Healing time is fast and most procedures can be performed in thirty minutes or less with minimal discomfort and excellent long-term results. "The ability to now combine ablative and non-ablative treatments allows for a treatment customized to meet the needs of each patient" said Dr. Greenberg.

For more superficial aesthetic corrections, there is new hope for maximizing one’s rejuvenated appearance. “Our new, optimized pulsed light (OPL) technology offers the most effective, safe and customizable photofacial and skin rejuvenation treatments available.” Recently declared, “A Hot Advance in Skin Care”, on ‘The Doctors TV Show’, the new, Max G OPL technology allows for more comfortable procedures with excellent outcomes and less downtime. “Pulsed light is similar to a laser in that it uses an intense beam of light," says Dr. Greenberg. “A chief difference is that pulsed light treats a larger body area than a laser, all the while being gentler on the skin. This pulsed light technology is more advanced than any other IPL technology. Patient safety is maximized and allows for a customizable approach to optimally treat unsightly spider-veins, rosacea, telangiectasias, hemangiomas, sun damage, dyschromia, poikiloderma, and angiomas on the face and other body areas."

According to Dr. Greenberg, “Our skin rejuvenation process is remarkable because of our unique ability to offer the most complete array of laser/light based modalities, as well as to offer patients a unique, combination approach for total skin rejuvenation that can be tailored to each patient’s specific aesthetic needs/expectations. Together, they provide great benefits to the patients, maximizing results, aiding in patient comfort while minimizing downtime compared to other skin rejuvenation approaches.”
