The internet beauty treatments from hell

People are suffering painful side-effects after injecting themselves with substances bought on the internet. Source: Supplied

WOMEN buying dodgy beauty treatments off the internet are being left disfigured from DIY facelifts.

The Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australasia is warning about the dangers of buying injectable substances on the web after an Australian woman suffered horrific and painful side effects.

The woman, who asked not to be named, has fat lips and infected blotches after getting a friend to jab her with products bought online.

Her experiment with a dermal filler designed to plump her lips went horribly wrong: they grotesquely ballooned. Abscesses also appeared on her face six weeks after the injection.

It is not clear if the woman, who is in her early 30s and being treated with antibiotics and drainage, will fully recover.

CPSA president Dr Gabrielle Caswell said it was worrying that overseas-based websites were claiming to offer cosmetic "medicines" such as Botox and dermal fillers, some packaged with unsafe and unhygienic do-it-yourself injection kits.

An international laboratory is testing the ingredients in the product the woman bought.

In Australia, cosmetic medicines such as botulinum toxin and dermal fillers are prescription-only. An appropriately registered doctor needs to do a medical history check and examination.

"The general public should be aware that the substance they intend to purchase online may not be sterile, or worse, may be a toxic blend of something unidentifiable, leading to long illness, scarring and disfigurement," Dr Caswell said.

"Purchasing such alleged medicines from international websites and importing them into Australia also may be illegal."

Paloma Faith values inner beauty

Paloma Faith thinks people should focus on their "inner beauty".

The 25-year-old singer understands some people need to have cosmetic surgery for medical reasons, but thinks most who have it should think more about their personalities.

She said: "I agree with cosmetic surgery for medical reasons – my mother had breast cancer and I think it's very sad when somebody has no choice in what happens to their body.

"But seeing what she went through made me think that, if you're a healthy human being, why would you even go there? It's very superficial to change what you have. I think everybody should focus on inner beauty."

However the London-born star reveals she is lucky because she has a mother who gave her self confidence.

She told Britain's Hello! magazine: "I think it's important to feel good inside and feel that you're worthy. I'm really lucky because I was brought up by my mother, who filled me with possibilities – she made me feel like every dream was possible.

"There's nothing better than achieving your goals, whatever they might be."

The beauty of Cosmetic Acupuncture

(NBC) - It's a centuries old practice that is being used to take the years of a patient's face. Cosmetic acupuncture uses needles placed in precise locations on the face to get rid of wrinkles.

Kelli Hodge just turned 40 and is hoping a treatment that's been around for centuries will take a few years off her face. She's having acupuncture by licensed acupuncturist Rick Bernard who explained, "So what we're trying to do is create a micro trauma under the skin to take advantage of the body's natural healing process."

Bernard says that during that healing process, collagen production is revved up which helps fill in wrinkles. And he said there's another benefit, he said, "It wakes the nerve up and gives you a natural lifting effect."

These before and after pictures show a tighter jaw line. Cosmetic acupuncture can also help minimize vertical lines between the eyes.

Nicki Banucci, got cosmetic acupuncture, "I think it's definitely taken off five years." She had ten sessions, "My laugh lines improved completely."

Each session costs $105 and most people need ten treatments.

Kelli says despite all the needles in her face, her 20 minute treatment is surprisingly relaxing, "It's just a slight pinch. The needle goes in and the pinch goes away once the needle is in."

Occasionally the client gets a little bruising and while Kelli may not get the same dramatic and quick results of Botox, she says she'd much rather take this chemical free approach to beauty one that's cheaper than Botox in the long run.

Meantime, Bernard says results should last about 18 months and with maintenance they could last up to three years.

Kelli is on her third treatment, but already she's noticed improvements, "I think the wrinkles diminished and these deep set lines diminished as well."

Best of all, she says she still looks like herself only younger which is why she'll be sticking to this beauty regimen, "I want something natural and authentic to who i am and this seems to be a safe and easy way to go."

Beauty Experts: A Medical Super Couple Weighs in on Plastic Surgery

Posted on: Friday, 8 April 2011, 00:00 CDT

Drs. Elie and Jody Levine, a power couple in NYC’s cosmetic and plastic surgery scene, always agree if and when it’s time for patient's surgery

New York (PRWEB) April 7, 2011

Elie Levine, M.D., a highly regarded board-certified plastic surgeon and Jody Levine, M.D., a board certified cosmetic and surgical dermatologist (as well as a board certified pediatrician) don’t always see the same patients, but they do see eye to eye when it comes to the limitations of cosmetic dermatology.

“Some results are just better accomplished with surgery,” admits Dr. Jody Levine who treats patients’ beauty woes with lasers, lights and injectibles. Her husband, Dr. Elie Levine uses surgical and medical techniques to permanently improve, enhance or alter a patients’ appearance.

People make the mistake of relying on plastic surgery as a last resort, often filing it under something to get in your 60s when the other treatments have stopped working for them.

According to the Levines, the earlier the better. “Facelifts under-50 last twice as long as post-50s lifts,” explains Elie Levine. “Recovery is faster, trauma is minimal and the skin is more elastic.”

Excess weight, especially from childbearing, is another common problem that is best solved with surgery. “I see patients signing up for a series of long term treatments to fight the bulge, but the best solution sometimes is a tummy tuck,” said Dr. Jody Levine.

After awhile, surgery is the obvious better investment. “Especially if you don’t plan to have more children. Post-child bearing is the optimal time to get a tuck,” said Dr. Elie Levine.

The husband and wife team who own and operate Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, PLLC, a highly regarded Park Avenue medical spa and a single source cosmetic practice, are not always in favor of surgery.

Some patients want to avoid surgery at all costs. “Some want surgery and just aren’t candidates for it,” said Dr. Elie Levine. “Plus, my wife is often able to work her magic, keeping patients off my operating table for good.”

Lasers and injectibles have changed the scope of cosmetics in the last ten years. They’ve been instrumental in preventing the need for surgery for some, and delayed the inevitable for others who want to fight aging as long and as hard as they can. But, for some, surgery may indeed be the right decision.

A double consultation with both a plastic surgeon and cosmetic dermatologist expert team helps patients make an informed decision. Consultations can be made at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC (35A E. 84th Street) by visiting http://www.plasticsandderm.com or calling (212) 988-1800.

The price of beauty, future of state cosmetology board

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Hair color and cosmetics can be synonymous with heavy duty chemicals, some of which have made national news for their harmful consequences.

Keratin treatments have been making headlines for their formaldehyde content, a chemical deemed a potential carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency.

When using the treatment, stylists often cover their mouths with guards and use heavy ventilation techniques. When not used properly, customers have experienced rashes, coughing and blurry vision.

On a national level, the Food and Drug Administration has limited ability to regulate cosmetics and labeling. As a result, state organizations like the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners have taken over the duty of licensing, inspection and safety regulation.

North Carolina's cosmetic board was founded in 1933 and oversees the licensing of about 85,000 beauty professionals and more than 15,000 salons across the state.

The board has learned that it is?on the list of more than 300 state organizations that could be pulled by the general assembly as regulatory committees review the effectiveness of the groups.

Despite being self-sufficient, using funding solely from licensing fees and other salon and stylist fees, the cosmetic board is up for review. The board believes regulators feel that their fees are a hindrance to the salon industry and their removal would take a burden off the industry during a recession.

The Governor and General Assembly are considering consolidation, restructure or elimination of the board.

North Carolina's State Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners consists of six members and a staff that enforce requirements for the licensure of individuals, salons and schools. They also inspect facilities and educate consumers on cosmetics.

The purpose of the board is to protect the public from unqualified practitioners and the risks associated with unsafe use of cosmetics, some of which include strong chemicals.

Cosmetic instructors and the board worry that North Carolina could return to a "kitchen salon" environment if there was no longer a check on sanitation and safety.

Instructors also say that cosmetic schools (e.g. Miller-Motte College, CFCC, etc) would become unnecessary if the board was no longer inspecting the 138 schools they currently oversee, and licensure was no longer required to practice.

Currently, the board enforces 1500 hours of student training and under state law, eight hours of continuing education per year.

To find out more information about the organizations being evaluated by the state, check www.ncleg.net/regreform.
