Cosmetic Pesticide Bylaw takes effect in April

Golden’s Cosmetic Pesticide Bylaw will come into effect on April 1st. The bylaw was passed by town council and bans the use of cosmetic pesticides — chemical products used to enhance the appearance of landscapes —for residential and public land.

Golden is joining 35 other communities in BC who have passed cosmetic pesticide bylaws in the past eight years.

“This is a good news story,” said Jon Wilsgard, Manager of Corporate Administration for the Town of Golden. “Council has been working for a couple of years on this initiative, and we’re proud to be joining other BC municipalities (who have passed this bylaw) as a show of solidarity for local governments.”

Wilsgard explained that Golden residents will receive a pamphlet in the mail this week that described what this new bylaw means and why the Town took on the initiative.

The communities’ reaction to the bylaw, continued Wilsgard, has been one of “passive compliance”.

“I think people, especially the younger generation, are becoming aware that cosmetic pesticides are not needed. We’re not hooked on the idea of a perfect lawn and there’s a growing awareness that these chemicals are really nasty.”

Although B.C. municipalities have the power to ban pesticides on residential and public land, they have no jurisdiction over commercial, industrial or institutional land and can’t control the sale of the products.

The Town of Golden supports the Union of British Columbia Municipalities’ call to the provincial government to ban the sale of cosmetic pesticides.

“We can’t do anything about the sale, so if we’re really going to make a dent in this issue the provincial government has to step forward with regulations.”

Rachel Darvill, Columbia Headwaters Program Manager for Wildsight’s Golden branch, congratulates the Town.

“We are very pleased that the Town of Golden has decided to take this positive step forward with the pesticide bylaw implementation,” said Darvill. “We are now one of four communities in the Kootenay Region that has adopted this bylaw which is designed to protect the health of residents and environment health, from the harmful effects of chemical pesticides used for cosmetic purposes.”

Although the Town will be enforcing the bylaw (with a fine of $100 for abusers), the Town and Wildsight believe public education is the key to making the changes work.

On Tuesday, April 18th, the Canadian Cancer Society and Wildsight are hosting two workshops with Paul Tukey, North America’s leading advocate of natural lawn care and author of the book, The Organic Lawn Care Manual.

The first session will be for stakeholders and businesses affected by the bylaw and the second will be for the general public.

Sci-fi brought to life as spray allows scars to heal themselves

A COSMETIC clinic has become the first centre in Scotland to use stem cell therapy to help heal burns and scars.Sculpta Clinic in Glasgow is one of just six in the UK to use the treatment, dubbed "spray-on skin", which uses the body's own ability to heal itself.

The treatment can also be used to treat vitiligo (a disorder that causes depigmentation of patch

es of skin), acne and burns scarring, say clinicians.

The Glasgow centre is the only one in Scotland to be part of a roll-out of the treatment, which was originally used to treat those burned in fires.

It is most effective in those patients where only the upper layers of skin are damaged.

Dr Mohammad Ahmad, clinical director at the Sculpta Clinic, said: "It really is the next generation of treatment and brings the magic of science fiction to life.

"Thanks to the technology involved, patients suffering from debilitating burns, horrific scarring, vitiligo, pigmentation and aged appearance are now able to heal properly, leaving them with no traces of the previous affliction."

The technique uses a sample of skin cells from a concealed area of the body, usually from behind the ear, in a biopsy of around 2mm in size.

These are then placed in a special enzyme solution to loosen critical cells which are then harvested.

The patient's skin is then treated with a laser to remove the top "dead" layers of skin to create a fresh surface to boost uptake of the solution.

A solution of stem cells in a suspension are then sprayed on to the treatment area and it is covered with a dressing for seven days.

Case study: 'Treatment has given me my life back'

The clinic says results of a one-off treatment are seen within weeks, with scars "virtually" gone within a year.

But Dr Ahmad admitted the therapy was not an instant solution - it takes time as it is simply a catalyst for the natural healing process of the skin.

He said: "So far we have had two patients use the treatment and even within just a few weeks they are happy with the way their skin is healing and are looking forward to seeing how the area improves over the coming weeks and months."

Treatments are not cheap at £3,500 a time, but are ethical as the method of using a patient's own cells and only on them is not seen as controversial.

Dr Kieren Bong, a cosmetic doctor who runs Essence clinic in Glasgow, said: "I have heard of stem cell research being used for burns victims.

"It's a very new technology with very promising signs. Studies have been very encouraging.

"But it is something that is not completely understood and we need more long-term data before we can say it is safe for everyone.

"We need more long-term data on the effects of using new cells generated from stem cells."

Husband Pressures Wife to Get Cosmetic Fixes

We almost expect celebrities we admire to get a nip and a tuck, or a shot or a lift, to keep up with the youth-obsessed nation we've become. But for most seemingly happily married couples, the words "Honey, I think it's time for Botox" can cut like a knife.

"What Would You Do?" wanted to know how people would react to a superficial husband who seemed to care only about his wife's outer beauty and nothing of her inner feelings, suggesting she get various cosmetic procedures.

We brought our hidden cameras to the Tea Tree Spa in Ridgewood, N.J. We tried it with two sets of actors, first with an older couple and then a young couple, and sat them at pedicure stations.

"Look how pretty her skin is. I remember when your skin was almost like that. Really smooth. Remember? When we first met," said our older husband.

"It hasn't changed that much," our older wife responded.

The husband then told her she would look much nicer if she got rid of some wrinkles and that her breasts were getting a little tired. The wife was in tears as the husband went to take a phone call.

The scene caught the attention of Christina O'Donnell, who was at the spa getting a pedicure with a friend. O'Donnell reassured our actress, telling her she was beautiful.

When the husband returned, he continued his tirade ... but O'Donnell wouldn't let him finish. She told him he should leave. He protested, saying he wasn't saying anything out of the ordinary but O'Donnell wouldn't relent. Finally, she told him he could use a punch in the face.

When we arrived with our camera crews, O'Donnell laughed and told us she thought a punch was what he deserved.

We reset the scene with our younger couple. The husband was admiring magazine pictures of beautiful models. He tried to convince his wife to get cosmetic work done.

"We could do that as part of your birthday package if you want," he said.

He then claimed that her looking good benefitted both of them as a couple and that they had an image to uphold.

"I'm not saying you're turning into a hag, but I mean you're getting older," he said.

A woman sitting beside them told the husband he was out of line.

"If my boyfriend ever said anything like that to me I'd slap him across the face," said Jennifer Schatz.

Schatz later told us she thought it was disgusting that the husband wanted his young wife to get plastic surgery.

We tried the scene one more time with our mature couple.

"Look at these women in here, they're completely smooth! That's how you used to look!" he said.

When the husband stepped away, spa customer Susan Udelsman tried to comfort the wife and told her he was way out of line. "Not to mention the pictures in the magazine are all air brushed. They have just as many wrinkles as we do. But they've got air brushing.

She went on to say that the wife was a beautiful woman and that he never should have said that to her.

"Maybe they should have a 'no man' sign on the door. No men allowed," Udelsman said.

When the husband came back, he told his wife that half of his friends were on their third wives and all he wanted was for her to get a bit of work done.

It was then that Udelsman reached her boiling point and stood up for her newfound friend.

See what she said on the next episode of "What Would You Do?" Friday night at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.

Schenectady Area Plastic Surgeon Reveals Most Popular Non-Surgical Treatments

Posted on: Monday, 25 April 2011, 00:00 CDT

Serving patients from Glens Falls, Schenectady and Saratoga Springs with BOTOXR Cosmetic and related treatments, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Juan Garcia explains the recent rise in non-surgical skin care at his practice.

Glens Falls, New York (PRWEB) April 23, 2011

For the last several years, BOTOXR Cosmetic has become increasingly popular. Board-certified Schenectady area plastic surgeon Dr. Juan Garcia (http://www.drgarciaplasticsurgery.com) attributes that popularity to increased awareness of the benefits and value of such non-surgical treatments.

“I’ve always been a proponent of minimally invasive techniques, so it has been easy for me to understand the popularity of treatments like BOTOX,” says Dr. Garcia. “Recently, I’ve seen these already in-demand non-surgical procedures requested even more at my practice. I was interested in understanding the factors behind this growth and took a look at 2010 plastic surgery statistics to learn more.”

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) tracks yearly statistics about plastic surgery. Although 2010 was a tough year for the economy, the ASPS reports that the total number of cosmetic procedures was increased from the 2009 figure, with minimally-invasive procedures up 5%. BOTOX remained at the top of this list (as it has for many years), and was up 12% from 2009. Soft tissue fillers, IPL treatments, and laser hair removal also became more popular in 2010.

"When I look at these 2010 statistics, I see them reflected in my own practice near Saratoga Springs. BOTOX, fillers, and laser procedures provide a valuable combination of effectiveness with minimal downtime, discomfort, and expense," says Dr. Garcia. "These medical spa procedures can be used to achieve a variety of goals – reduction of lines and wrinkles, skin rejuvenation, hair removal, vein treatment, and much more. For my smart, savvy, and on-the-go patients it’s no surprise these procedures are so popular."

Although Dr. Garcia emphasizes the benefits of medical spa procedures, he’s careful to clarify that they cannot do what surgery can do. He points out that the main drawback of non-surgical procedures is that the results achieved are not as dramatic as the results that can be achieved through surgery. In addition, medical spa procedures often provide only temporary results. Patients usually need to return for a series of treatments and for maintenance procedures.

Dr. Garcia also notes that the safety and efficacy of medical spa procedures are only ensured if people select a qualified provider. The patients who choose his practice do so because they know he has the requisite training and experience.

"I have the utmost respect for the people who visit me for plastic surgery near Albany," Dr. Garcia says. "I give them the facts they need about their options, answer their questions thoroughly, and trust them to select the procedure that makes the most sense for their goals. More and more, they are selecting non-surgical procedures. I expect this trend to continue and look forward to expanding my menu of medical spa services. "

Juan C. Garcia, MD, FACS (http://www.drgarciaplasticsurgery.com) is medical director of Garcia Plastic Surgery, serving Glens Falls, Saratoga Springs, Schenectady, and Albany. Plastic surgery offered at the practice includes breast augmentation, tummy tuck, liposuction, and facelift. Dr. Garcia earned his M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and completed a decade of surgical training before entering private practice. He is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Acupuncture as Cosmetic Surgery

An ancient way to treat pain is now the latest way to look younger.

Kelli Hodge of San Jose just turned 40 and is hoping a practice that’s been around for centuries will take a few years off her face.?

She is having cosmetic acupuncture in Willow Glen by licensed acupuncturist Rick Bernard who is trained in the practice known as Mei Zen.?

He places needles in precise locations on the face. "What we are trying to do is create a Micro-trauma under the skin to take advantage of the body’s natural healing process," said Bernard.?

"Just as your skin heals from a cut, to heal from these tiny needle sticks your body starts making more collagen, which fills in wrinkles." Cosmetic acupuncture has another benefit too. According to Bernard, the procedure wakes up the nerve and gives a natural lifting effect.

He says he has successfully treated clients vertical lines between the? eyes, and marionette lines, but the deep horizontal lines across the forehead are more challenging to treat. The treatment does not offer the same quick and dramatic results of Botox, but clients say they feel the results are much more natural.? Kelli Hodge says despite the twenty needles in her face, the treatment is not painful. She is happy with the results.

"I think the wrinkles have diminished, especially the deep set lines below my eyes," said Hodge.?

Nicki Banucci had ten sessions and is thrilled with the results. "My laugh lines improved completely and I think it has definitely taken off five years," she said.

Each session costs $105 and Bernard recommends ten sessions to get results that can last from eighteen months to three years.? Clients also often supplement their acupuncture session with LED light therapy sessions to help treat brown spots and redness along with 100 percent chemical free products developed from the line called Authentic Skin.

Hodge says she would never consider Botox or Plastic Surgery so she appreciates this natural alternative. "I want something natural and authentic to who I am, and this seems to be a safe and easy way to go."

Atlanta Plastic Surgeon Celebrates Nineteen Years in Practice with Open House

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 21, 2011

Over 100 friends and previous patients will gather next Thursday to celebrate 19 years of practice in cosmetic and plastic surgery. The event is slated to include a wine tasting, passed hor d’oeuvres, live music, gift bags, and drawings for special giveaways.

Following a year-long fellowship at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital in New York City, Dr. John LeRoy returned to Atlanta where he started his own cosmetic and plastic surgery practice. Nineteen years later, thanks to the unwavering support of his longtime patient base, Dr. LeRoy would like to share this milestone with those who made it possible.

Nineteen years of practice has allowed Dr. LeRoy the opportunity to implement an array of cosmetic surgery technologies and techniques, and most importantly, surgical experience. Dr. LeRoy uses these techniques, performed in-office with gentle numbing, to make patient’s look up to ten years younger.

Dr. LeRoy attributes much of his success to time and surgical discretion sharing, “I always try to impart the importance of personalized care to my patients. I know that cosmetic surgery is a very personal, thoughtful decision that can have major effects on an individual’s life. I like to approach surgery as a team—the patient and myself. I want them to know that I want to enhance a person’s natural appearance, not change who they are.”

Admission to Dr. John LeRoy’s open house is free of charge. Those who wish to attend can RSVP by calling (770) 447-1114 or email drjleroy(at)gmail(dot)com. Dr. LeRoy’s practice is located at 5673 Peachtree Dunwoody Rd., NE Suite 375 in Atlanta, GA 30342.

Cosmetic Procedures on the Rise in the Mid-South

GERMANTOWN, TN - The worries and wrinkles caused by the bad economy are being erased as cosmetic surgery is on the rise in the Mid-South.

All day, every day the number of credit cards swiped at Germantown Aesthetics increases. Doctor Gregory Laurence says, "We have absolutely never been busier, we have patients that are leaving to go other places to do procedures because we can't get them on our schedule." Dr. Laurence says he even has a list of 25 people waiting for vein procedures.

"It's a good mix between returning patients, but mostly it's new patients by referral." Dr. Laurence says, "I think the word is getting out that cosmetic surgery really delivers, it's the real deal."

Dr. Laurence says his advertising budget was cut when the economy crashed. Now business is booming just through referrals. He says new techniques with less recovery time and longer lasting results make the procedures more appealing. "Cosmetic surgery isn't your mother's cosmetic surgery," Dr. Laurence says, "With new anesthesia, patients can have zero bruising, have very fast weekend recovery, sometimes lunchtime recovery."

Plus, Dr. Laurence says, while people are still losing work, patients are willing to pay a little more if a simple fix can help save their job. "Patients come to us with a common story, my job is in jeopardy and everything is important, the way I look, present myself, my image. They say, 'What's available?'" A question that keeps patients coming in and a sign that people are willing to spend.

Cosmetic procedures with recoveries of more than a week are not increasing, many patients say they can't afford to take time off work.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery cosmetic surgery is up nearly 10 percent across the nation. The most frequently performed surgical procedure is breast augmentation, the most popular non-surgical is botox.

Botched cosmetic surgery: women dead after procedure in back room of tile business

When the topic of breast augmentation or cosmetic breast surgery is approached, many immediately conjure stripper, Vegas cocktail waitress, Heidi Montag, oversized, mountainous, cleavage-bearing breasts that defy gravity and the clothing wrapped around them. But prominent New York Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Scott Newman, who specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery, notes the majority of women who opt for cosmetic breast surgery are more interested in finding the right size for themselves rather than obtaining overpowering breasts that enter the room before their body does.
