Breast Augmentation is Most Popular Cosmetic Surgical Procedure, Notes Chicago-Area Plastic Surgeon Allan Parungao, MD

Oak Brook, IL (PRWEB) March 24, 2011

For the fifth year in a row, more American women have had breast augmentation than any other cosmetic surgical procedure. The newest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that the number of breast implant procedures performed in the U.S. in 2010 was 269,203 — a 39% increase over 2000.

“Women today have more choices than ever when it comes to enhancing the appearance of their breasts,” says Chicago-area plastic surgeon Allan Parungao, MD, FACS, author of A Woman’s Guide to Cosmetic Breast Surgery and Body Contouring.

“Since the FDA approved the newest generation of silicone gel breast implants in 2006, more and more women have been choosing this option over saline implants,” notes Dr. Parungao. Six out of 10 women who had breast augmentation in 2010 opted for silicone gel implants, according to ASPS statistics, compared to 50% in 2009.

Wendy, a 35-year-old Chicago-area woman, recently opted for silicone gel implants. “After I had my daughter in 2009, I wanted breast augmentation,” she says. “But with my job and all my workouts, I didn’t want my breasts to be so huge that people would be looking down at my chest.”

“An important part of getting natural-looking results from breast augmentation is choosing the right size and shape implants,” explains Dr. Parungao, who has Chicago-area offices in Oak Brook, Naperville and Vernon Hills, IL. “Based on Wendy’s measurements and her build, we selected implants that gave her both increased projection and the proper width for better cleavage.” Wendy went from a 34B to a 34DD.

“After getting breast implants, my breasts look so natural that I can wear regular clothes and look very presentable,” says Wendy, who does fitness modeling and swimsuit modeling as a hobby. “And if I want to up-do my breasts for a photo shoot, I can do that as well—so I have the best of both worlds.”

Achieving optimum results from breast augmentation sometimes involves changing not only the size, but the position of the breasts. “Some women, especially those who have had children, find that their breasts tend to sag over time,” says Dr. Parungao. “In these cases, we can combine breast augmentation surgery with a breast lift to counteract the effects of gravity and give the breasts a fuller, more youthful appearance.”

Recent improvements have also made recovering from breast augmentation surgery much easier. To ease patients’ post-operative discomfort, Dr. Parungao offers the On-Q pain pump at no extra charge. (Some plastic surgeons charge as much as $500 extra for the device.)

“On-Q is a simple system for delivering local anesthetic in the first few days after surgery,” Dr. Parungao explains. “It’s designed to give patients a more comfortable recovery—without narcotic side-effects such as breathing difficulties, nausea, constipation and that ‘knocked-out’ feeling.”

“I’d heard from friends who’d had breast augmentation that they’d had painful throbbing, but I had no pain in my breasts,” says Tasha, a patient who recently was treated with the On-Q pain pump after breast implant surgery.

“Every few minutes, the On-Q released the anesthetic medication,” she recalls. “I had my surgery on a Wednesday, and the pain pump was removed on Friday. It was a life-saver!”

Cosmetic surgery on the rise among men

More average Joes are going under the knife.

New statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reveal that in 2010, plastic surgery procedures for men were up 2% from the previous year -- and facelifts top the list of fastest-growing procedures for men.

In 2010, men underwent more than 1.1 million cosmetic procedures.

And anecdotally, surgeons say as the number of men seeking plastic surgery increases, so too does the number of so-called average Joes wanting to adjust their looks.

In 2010, facelifts for men boasted a 14% increase from 2009. Ear surgery was the second-fastest-growing procedure, with an 11% increase.

Dr. Philip Haeck, president of the society of plastic surgeons, said the growth in cosmetic procedures for men can be attributed to an aging population.

"The growth in cosmetic surgical procedures for men may be a product of our aging baby boomers who are now ready to have plastic surgery," he said. "Minimally invasive procedures such as Botox and soft tissue fillers work to a point. However, as you age and gravity takes over, surgical procedures that lift the skin are necessary in order to show significant improvement."

Plastic Surgeon Says He Operated on Gadhafi

It was well past midnight when the Brazilian surgeon says he was escorted deep inside a bunker in the Libyan capital.

His assignment: to shave years off Moammar Gadhafi's appearance by removing fat from his belly and injecting it into his wrinkled face. The Libyan leader also got hair plugs.

"He told me that he had been in power for 25 years at that time, and that he did not want the young people of his nation to see him as an old man," Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro recalled. "I recommended a facelift, but he refused."

The secretive four-hour procedure in 1995 was done, at Gadhafi's insistence, with local anesthesia because he wanted to remain alert. Midway through, the Libyan leader stopped to have a hamburger.

Gadhafi was worried a facelift would be too noticeable, so he opted for the less radical procedure, the plastic surgeon told The Associated Press.

"I warned Gadhafi that the effects of the operation I performed would last for about five years, that it had an expiration date after which the skin would sag and the wrinkles would reappear," Ribeiro said.

"He said he would call me if he needed me to come back," and about five years ago there was such a request, but Ribeiro had a family obligation. "They never called me again," he said.

At the time of the surgery, Gadhafi was 53, but Ribeiro said he looked at least 10 years older. A photo taken at the time shows the smiling doctor posing next to the Libyan leader, who wore a white suit, floral shirt and had pronounced wrinkles crisscrossing his face and neck.

After the procedure, "he looked like a 45-year-old man," the doctor said.

Ribeiro insists he is speaking out now only to provide insight into a man about whom little is known, and certainly not to boast.

"Gadhafi is not looking very good these days," said Ribeiro, noting that the 68-year-old leader has appeared jowly in recent appearances, his skin puffy, loose and deeply creased. "To let potential patients know that I operated on him would be counterproductive."

More Men Going Under The Knife

Posted on: Tuesday, 22 March 2011, 08:19 CDT

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – Statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that more men are going under the knife. Overall cosmetic plastic surgeries in men rose 2 percent in 2010 compared to 2009. In 2010, men underwent more than 1.1 million cosmetic procedures, both minimally-invasive and surgical.

In addition, many male surgical procedures increased significantly. Facelifts for men rose 14 percent in 2010 and male liposuction increased 7 percent.

“The growth in cosmetic surgical procedures for men may be a product of our aging baby boomers who are now ready to have plastic surgery,” ASPS President Phillip Haeck, MD, was quoted as saying.

“Minimally-invasive procedures such as Botox and soft tissue fillers work to a point. However, as you age and gravity takes over, surgical procedures that lift the skin are necessary in order to show significant improvement.”

The fastest growing male cosmetic procedures from 2009 to 2010 in order of most to least increased percentage include: facelifts, ear surgery, soft tissue fillers, botulinum toxin type A, liposuction, breast reduction in men, eyelid surgery, dermabrasion, laser hair removal, and laser treatment of leg vein.

Plastic surgeons say that another trend they see in male plastic surgery is the type of patient seeking their services.

“Typically people think of celebrities and high profile men going under the knife,” Stephen Baker, MD, an ASPS Member Surgeon based in Washington DC, was quoted as saying. “And while that may be true, the typical male cosmetic surgery patient that I see is an average guy who wants to look as good as he feels. Most of my patients are ‘men’s men,’ the kind of guy you might not think would have plastic surgery.”

Dr. Baker said that baby boomers who are now reaching retirement age are the new face of the male plastic surgery trend.

“They want to look good. So when they have the financial means to do it, they are ready to do it now,” said Dr. Baker.

The top five male cosmetic surgical procedures in 2010 were nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, liposuction, breast reduction, and hair transplant.

In 2010, the top five male cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures were botulinum toxin type A, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, chemical peel, and soft tissue fillers.

Liberate Cosmetic Surgery: New Survey Reveals 30% of Women NEVER Saw Their Cosmetic Surgeon During Treatment

LONDON, March 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- With the recent deaths following botched cosmetic surgery abroad of 21 year old Claudia Adeseye Aderotimi and former Miss Argentina Solange Magnano, mother of two in Buenos Aires, women still appear to put price above safety.

A new survey conducted by Liberate, the UK’s largest network of BAAPS* and/or BAPRAS**-accredited cosmetic surgeons, clearly shows the need for women to be better informed about what can go wrong with cosmetic surgery and the importance of knowing the qualifications and experience of their surgeon, to help them make an informed decision.

Liberate, which has over 60 locations across the UK, surveyed 3000 women between the ages of 18-34 and found that 30% of women had undergone cosmetic surgery with breast augmentation ("boob job") being the most popular procedure (28%) followed by Nose (17%) eyes (11%) and Liposuction/tummy tuck (15%). However, the survey confirmed that many women do not receive the service they deserve from their cosmetic surgery provider. Even though 74% felt it was important to know and see their surgeon throughout the course of treatment, the reality was that 30% of women who had surgery NEVER saw their surgeon.

The Liberate survey also highlights the need for women to be better informed of the dangers of cosmetic surgery abroad and in the UK. A staggering 40% admitted that they would consider having surgery abroad if it was cheaper and half the women surveyed would have cosmetic surgery if cost was no object with 17% prepared to take out a loan to cover this.

Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon James Murphy, a founder member of Liberate, said:

"The new survey highlights the fact that although people claim safety is the most important decision when considering cosmetic surgery, many will still be influenced by price regardless of the physical cost. Cosmetic surgery is a medical surgical procedure and it should be treated as such."

Without the tools needed to make responsible choices cosmetic surgery can end up costing people financially, physically and psychologically, Liberate aims to give people the power to choose, providing them with a new and safer approach to cosmetic surgery.

Cosmetic procedures are on the rise for men, says Tampa dermatologist

(PR NewsChannel) / March 22, 2011 / TAMPA, Fla. / More men are lining up to get cosmetic procedures says Dr. Seth Forman. The Tampa dermatologist points to the latest data by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) showing 1.1 million men had some type of cosmetic procedure in 2010.

“I have seen an increase in non-surgical cosmetic treatments among men,” says Forman.

According to the data, facelifts saw the biggest gains with a 14 percent increase. Ear tuck surgeries and fillers, like Botox and Juvederm, also saw double digit jumps.

“Men are concerned about the aging process as well,” says the Tampa dermatologist. “They may also feel pressure to look younger in the competitive job market.”

Forman says the popularity of men’s magazines and the desire to look fit and healthy has taken some of the stigma off plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures.

“Men are more likely to try different things, like skin care products or Botox, to look younger,” he says. “The no longer think it is just for women.”

Although more and more men are getting cosmetic surgeries, women still make up the majority of patients. The ASPS reported a five percent increase in plastic surgery overall from 2009 to 2010.

About Dr. Seth Forman:? Dr. Forman has two Tampa dermatology offices; one in Carrollwood and the other in Downtown Tampa. He opened the Tampa Psoriasis Center in his Carrollwood office in March. Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg, Cosmetic Surgeon, Offers Unique Laser Treatments for Total Skin Rejuvenation

Woodbury, NY (PRWEB) March 24, 2011

Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D., with offices in Woodbury, NY and Park Ave, NYC, is one of the first cosmetic surgeons in New York to offer patients a new, same-day, combination approach to laser skin resurfacing. This FDA approved, combination approach is the 1st of its kind from the company that invented and patented micro-fractional laser technology (Palomar Medical Technologies, Inc.). Using a combination of micro-fractional laser technologies allows for the optimization and customization of a complete skin rejuvenation regimen for each patient, maximizing client aesthetic outcomes, providing faster healing and reducing social downtime.????Combination micro-fractional laser skin resurfacing is the perfect choice for the treatment of wrinkles, acne and surgical scars, melasma, striae, unwanted textural irregularities, crow's feet, blotchy skin and more, on virtually any trouble spot on the body - face, neck, chest, arms, legs.

"Skin imperfections on the face and body can detract from a person’s self-image, and can make you look older. Using a unique combination of fractional laser technologies represents a great advancement in aesthetics because it helps patients look and feel their best without having to undergo invasive surgical procedures with significant recovery time,” said Dr. Stephen Greenberg, a leading Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon. Fractional laser skin resurfacing treatments from Dr. Greenberg use the most advanced laser technology to target skin imperfections without harming surrounding tissue. Healing time is fast and most procedures can be performed in thirty minutes or less with minimal discomfort and excellent long-term results. "The ability to now combine ablative and non-ablative treatments allows for a treatment customized to meet the needs of each patient" said Dr. Greenberg.

For more superficial aesthetic corrections, there is new hope for maximizing one’s rejuvenated appearance. “Our new, optimized pulsed light (OPL) technology offers the most effective, safe and customizable photofacial and skin rejuvenation treatments available.” Recently declared, “A Hot Advance in Skin Care”, on ‘The Doctors TV Show’, the new, Max G OPL technology allows for more comfortable procedures with excellent outcomes and less downtime. “Pulsed light is similar to a laser in that it uses an intense beam of light," says Dr. Greenberg. “A chief difference is that pulsed light treats a larger body area than a laser, all the while being gentler on the skin. This pulsed light technology is more advanced than any other IPL technology. Patient safety is maximized and allows for a customizable approach to optimally treat unsightly spider-veins, rosacea, telangiectasias, hemangiomas, sun damage, dyschromia, poikiloderma, and angiomas on the face and other body areas."

According to Dr. Greenberg, “Our skin rejuvenation process is remarkable because of our unique ability to offer the most complete array of laser/light based modalities, as well as to offer patients a unique, combination approach for total skin rejuvenation that can be tailored to each patient’s specific aesthetic needs/expectations. Together, they provide great benefits to the patients, maximizing results, aiding in patient comfort while minimizing downtime compared to other skin rejuvenation approaches.”

New Jersey Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Thomas Streko, Explains How Tooth Loss Can Be Deadly to Diabetic Patients

03.22.2011– Westfield, NJ. – March 22, 2011 – One of New Jersey’s leading cosmetic dentists, Dr. Thomas Streko, recently published an article on his website, www.DrStreko.com titled "Important Diabetic Dentistry News." In the article, Dr. Streko discusses a new study that has come out of Australia that underscores just how crucial good dental health is for patients with diabetes.

Dr. Streko writes, “According to the study, which was conducted by The George Institute for International Health in Sydney, Australia, diabetics who lose all of their teeth are twice as likely to die then diabetics in the same age group who have managed to keep the majority of their teeth.
The study covered almost 11,000 adults who were aged 55 to 88, all of them with Type 2 diabetes. And the results are, frankly, frightening. During the five years the study monitored them, twice as many diabetics without teeth died.”

“If you’re diabetic, you may worry that more extensive procedures like implant dentistry are unavailable to you. In fact as long as your diabetes is under control, a trained diabetic dentist will more than likely be able to develop an implant treatment plan that will work for you, either alone or in partnership with a specialist.
The right diabetic dentist will also be able to keep your smile as healthy and beautiful as the smile of a patient who doesn’t have diabetes – putting everything from a healthy mouth to veneers, whitening and even smile makeovers within your reach,” continues Dr. Streko.

More men undergo cosmetic surgical procedures

Statistics released today (3/21/11) by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that more men are going under the knife. Overall cosmetic plastic surgery procedures in men were up 2 percent in 2010 compared to 2009. However, many male surgical procedures increased significantly. Facelifts for men rose 14 percent in 2010 while male liposuction increased 7 percent.

2010 ASPS statistics show that men underwent more than 1.1 million cosmetic procedures, both minimally-invasive and surgical. The majority of the the Men's Top 10 fastest-growing cosmetic procedures are surgical, which bucks the previous trend of growth in minimally-invasive treatments.

"The growth in cosmetic surgical procedures for men may be a product of our aging baby boomers who are now ready to have plastic surgery," said ASPS President Phillip Haeck, MD. "Minimally-invasive procedures such as BotoxR and soft tissue fillers work to a point. However, as you age and gravity takes over, surgical procedures that lift the skin are necessary in order to show significant improvement."

Men's Top Ten: Fastest-Growing Male Cosmetic Procedures (by percentage increase)

Plastic surgeons say that another trend they see in male plastic surgery is the type of patient seeking their services.

"Typically people think of celebrities and high profile men going under the knife," said Stephen Baker, MD, an ASPS Member Surgeon based in Washington DC. "And while that may be true, the typical male cosmetic surgery patient that I see is an average guy who wants to look as good as he feels. Most of my patients are 'men's men,' the kind of guy you might not think would have plastic surgery."

Dr. Baker said that baby boomers who are now reaching retirement age are the new face of the male plastic surgery trend. "They want to look good. So when they have the financial means to do it, they are ready to do it now," said Dr. Baker.

Call it the changing face of cosmetic surgery. New statistics released Monday by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that increasingly, men are lining up at doctor's offices, looking for a little nip and tuck.

Cosmetic procedures involving men rose two per cent overall in 2010 compared with the year before, the ASPS reports.

Last year, more than 1.1 million cosmetic procedures were performed on men. While that's nowhere near the 12 million or so procedures undergone by women, it appears to be a sign that more men are embracing cosmetic surgery, says Dr. Wayne Carman, the former president of the Canadian Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

"I think that men are becoming increasingly aware of the availability of plastic surgery," Carman told CTV's Canada AM Monday morning.

"And I think it's partly driven by the demographic. The baby boom tends to be the driving force behind most trends in our world."

Born between 1946 and 1964, baby boomers now range in age from 47 to 65 -- a prime time for plastic surgery for men. Carman says as boomers age, many are noticing the effects of time on their face and body and wanting to make a few changes.

"It's not so much a matter of their age on the calendar; it's how old they appear," he said.

While women who undergo plastic surgery tend to say they did it for their own self-esteem, many of the men who choose plastic surgery report they are doing it for career reasons, to appear younger and to remain competitive in the workplace.

"The potential for advancement and for remaining in an authority position can be undermined if you look kind of weak and old and tired. So that's where our work comes in to help them with that," he said.

Carman reports that while full facelifts are definitely growing in popularity, many men prefer smaller, subtler procedures.

"Men will typically ask for things that can be concealed and that won't have a lengthy recovery," he says.

So eyelid surgery is a very common request, he says, because it offers a fairly quick recovery.

The ASPS reports that nose reshaping surgery topped the list of most common cosmetic surgical procedures performed on men in 2010, followed by eyelid surgery and liposuction.

There was a 14 per cent jump in the number of facelifts performed on men last year compared to the year previous, four per cent more eyelid surgeries and a seven per cent hike in liposuction.

As well,?there was an 11 per cent rise in ear-shaping surgery, a 10 per cent increase in the number seeking soft-tissue fillers, as well as a nine per cent increase in Botox injections. Dermabrasion to smooth out the skin was up four per cent.

Plastic surgeon: I removed Khadafy's belly fat and injected it into his face

Libyan President Moammar Khadafy reportedly had plastic surgery in 1995.

Moammar Khadafy wanted to be bold and beautiful.

The Libyan strongman underwent cosmetic surgery in 1995, instructing a plastic surgeon to give him hair plugs and remove his belly fat to inject into his wrinkly face, a Brazilian doctor claims.

"He told me that he had been in power for 25 years at that time, and that he did not want the young people of his nation to see him as an old man," Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro recounted to The Associated Press. "I recommended a face-lift, but he refused" because he feared it would look too obvious.

Khadafy insisted the secret, four-hour surgery be done with local anesthesia because he wanted to be alert throughout the entire procedure.

The surgeon told Brazilian weekly Epoca that he's speaking out now - as Khadafy fights rebels and Western coalition forces - because he wanted "to contribute to understanding this historic figure around whom there is much speculation but little information."

Riberio, a noted Brazilian plastic surgeon, says? he performed middle-of-the night cosmetic surgery on Gadhafi 16 years ago. (Liacyr Ribeiro/AP)

Ribeiro said he had been contacted in 1994 by then-Libyan Health Minister Mohamed Zaid while attending a conference in Tripoli. After the lecture, Zaid approached him and said he wanted to introduce him to someone special.

Ribeiro thought he was going to be introduced to Zaid's wife. But the government official drove Ribeiro to a guarded home, where he met Khadafy. The surgery was scheduled for the next year.

Halfway through the procedure - which took place in the middle of the night - Khadafy took a break and ate a hamburger, said the prominent doctor, who is said to have performed cosmetic surgery on Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Khadafy was 53 years old at the time of the surgery. After he went under the knife, Ribeiro said, Khadafy looked like a youthful 45-year-old.

Dr. Fabio Naccache, another Brazilian doctor who was part of the surgery team, confirmed Ribeiro's claims to the Associated Press.

The doctor told Khadafy, who's noticeably wrinklier today at the age of 68, that the results would last only five years.

Ribeiro said Khadafy requested another procedure five years ago but that Ribeiro had a family obligation at the time. "They never called me again," he said.

The price of beauty, future of state cosmetology board

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Hair color and cosmetics can be synonymous with heavy duty chemicals, some of which have made national news for their harmful consequences.

Keratin treatments have been making headlines for their formaldehyde content, a chemical deemed a potential carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency.

When using the treatment, stylists often cover their mouths with guards and use heavy ventilation techniques. When not used properly, customers have experienced rashes, coughing and blurry vision.

On a national level, the Food and Drug Administration has limited ability to regulate cosmetics and labeling. As a result, state organizations like the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners have taken over the duty of licensing, inspection and safety regulation.

North Carolina's cosmetic board was founded in 1933 and oversees the licensing of about 85,000 beauty professionals and more than 15,000 salons across the state.

The board has learned that it is?on the list of more than 300 state organizations that could be pulled by the general assembly as regulatory committees review the effectiveness of the groups.

Despite being self-sufficient, using funding solely from licensing fees and other salon and stylist fees, the cosmetic board is up for review. The board believes regulators feel that their fees are a hindrance to the salon industry and their removal would take a burden off the industry during a recession.

The Governor and General Assembly are considering consolidation, restructure or elimination of the board.

North Carolina's State Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners consists of six members and a staff that enforce requirements for the licensure of individuals, salons and schools. They also inspect facilities and educate consumers on cosmetics.

The purpose of the board is to protect the public from unqualified practitioners and the risks associated with unsafe use of cosmetics, some of which include strong chemicals.

Cosmetic instructors and the board worry that North Carolina could return to a "kitchen salon" environment if there was no longer a check on sanitation and safety.

Instructors also say that cosmetic schools (e.g. Miller-Motte College, CFCC, etc) would become unnecessary if the board was no longer inspecting the 138 schools they currently oversee, and licensure was no longer required to practice.

Currently, the board enforces 1500 hours of student training and under state law, eight hours of continuing education per year.

Men Fuel Rebound in Cosmetic Surgery

New ASPS Statistics Show Sizeable Increases in Facelifts and Other Surgical Procedures for Men

Newswise — ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Statistics released today (3/21/11) by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that more men are going under the knife.

The majority of the the Men’s Top 10 fastest-growing cosmetic procedures are surgical, which bucks the previous trend of growth in minimally-invasive treatments.

“The growth in cosmetic surgical procedures for men may be a product of our aging baby boomers who are now ready to have plastic surgery,” said ASPS President Phillip Haeck, MD. “Minimally-invasive procedures such as BotoxR and soft tissue fillers work to a point. However, as you age and gravity takes over, surgical procedures that lift the skin are necessary in order to show significant improvement.”

Plastic surgeons say that another trend they see in male plastic surgery is the type of patient seeking their services.

“Typically people think of celebrities and high profile men going under the knife,” said Stephen Baker, MD, an ASPS Member Surgeon based in Washington DC.

Baker.

In fact, one of Dr. Baker’s patients is an “average Joe” named Joe Marek. Joe recently underwent a facelift and eyelid surgery. The 57-year old said, “I didn’t feel that old. I felt young. I was working out. I was pretty active and I wanted to look like I felt inside.”

Joe also said his 52-year-old girlfriend supported his decision to have plastic surgery.

Brazilian plastic surgeon says he performed cosmetic surgery on Gadhafi

SAO PAULO — It was well past midnight when the Brazilian surgeon says he was escorted deep inside a bunker in the Libyan capital.

/ The Associated Press - FILE - In this March 8, 2011 file photo, Libyan Leader Moammar Gadhafi arrives at a hotel to give television interviews in Tripoli, Libya. Brazilian plastic surgeon Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro says that he performed middle-of-the night cosmetic surgery on Gadhafi deep inside one of the leader’s bunkers in 1995. (AP Photo/Ben Curtis, File)

His assignment: to shave years off Moammar Gadhafi’s appearance by removing fat from his belly and injecting it into his wrinkled face. The Libyan leader also got hair plugs.

“He told me that he had been in power for 25 years at that time, and that he did not want the young people of his nation to see him as an old man,” Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro recalled. “I recommended a facelift, but he refused.”

The secretive four-hour procedure in 1995 was done, at Gadhafi’s insistence, with local anesthesia because he wanted to remain alert. Midway through, the Libyan leader stopped to have a hamburger.

Gadhafi was worried a facelift would be too noticeable, so he opted for the less radical procedure, the plastic surgeon told The Associated Press.

“I warned Gadhafi that the effects of the operation I performed would last for about five years, that it had an expiration date after which the skin would sag and the wrinkles would reappear,” Ribeiro said.

“He said he would call me if he needed me to come back,” and about five years ago there was such a request, but Ribeiro had a family obligation. “They never called me again,” he said.

After the procedure, “he looked like a 45-year-old man,” the doctor said.

Ribeiro insists he is speaking out now only to provide insight into a man about whom little is known, and certainly not to boast.

“Gadhafi is not looking very good these days,” said Ribeiro, noting that the 68-year-old leader has appeared jowly in recent appearances, his skin puffy, loose and deeply creased. “To let potential patients know that I operated on him would be counterproductive.”

Gadhafi is hardly the only world leader to go under the knife.

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi owes his look to plastic surgery and a hair transplant — work also performed by Ribeiro, according to media reports, though the doctor refuses to confirm that. And rumors swirled about Russian leader Vladimir Putin after he appeared last October with heavy makeup covering bruises under his eyes.

A surgeon with an international reputation, the 70-year-old Ribeiro has written two books on plastic surgery and taken part in conferences around the world on the topic.

It was at one such gathering, in May 1994 in Tripoli, that Ribeiro spoke about his specialty, cosmetic breast surgery.

Afterward, a Libyan official identified as Mohamed Zaid “came up to me and said he wanted me to meet someone who Libyans love very much,” Ribeiro said. “Because of my specialty, I thought he was going to introduce me to his wife.”

Instead, Zaid drove Ribeiro to a house surrounded by armed guards.

“Zaid and I were taken to a library located underneath a tent set up inside the house, and there he told me that he wanted me to examine Gadhafi,” Ribeiro said.

A few minutes later, the Libyan leader, wearing a long white tunic, entered the room, “shook my hand and greeted me, speaking perfect English.”

“He was an extremely polite, intelligent, cordial and soft-spoken person who quickly told me what he wanted and why,” Ribeiro said.

Gadhafi wanted an immediate operation, but Ribeiro needed a surgical team and the procedure was scheduled for January 1995.

It began at 2 a.m. in Gadhafi’s bunker, which “had two fully equipped and very modern operating rooms, a gym and a swimming pool,” Ribeiro said.

“He insisted on local anesthesia saying he wanted to remain alert,” the doctor added. “He was a very calm patient.”

Sao Paulo-based plastic surgeon Dr. Fabio Naccache confirmed to the AP that he was part of the team and performed a hair transplant on the Libyan leader.

About halfway through, Gadhafi said he was hungry.

“Hamburgers were brought in for all and surgery was interrupted for several minutes while we ate,” the surgeon said.

Afterward, Zaid handed Ribeiro an envelope “full of U.S. dollars and Swiss francs.” He would not say how much money it contained.

“All I can say is that it was more than I would charge for my services in Brazil,” he said.

The doctor stayed in Tripoli for 10 days while Gadhafi recovered.

Ribeiro said he assumes Gadhafi turned to him because Libyan surgeons were either “incapable of doing what I did or too scared that he would die on the operating table.”
