20. Ministry bans slimming product

PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry has banned Beau de Cellex WakaFit +, a slimming product that has been found to cause severe infections.

Those who are treated with it would experience severe infections which causes swelling, itchiness and scars on their thighs, buttocks and abdomen, minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

“Investigations have shown that the product is applied through mesotherapy, or better known as air gun, by a beautician.”

“No cosmetic product is allowed to be applied through such a method,” he said.

On Monday, a 30-year-old man, who only wanted to be known as Lim, told a press conference that he had 30 “holes” around his waist after receiving jabs through a “needleless injection” weight loss programme.

The man started developing blisters, which turned into open wounds, after he was injected with the product at a beauty parlour.

Based on the guidelines for control of cosmetic products in Malaysia, Liow said such items could only be used externally.

“When the National Pharmace-utical Control Bureau was notified about Beau de Cellex WakaFit +, it was informed that the product was for body firming and only for external use,” he said.

He said Vivaderm Resources Sdn Bhd had been directed to halt the sale and distribution of the product with immediate effect.

“The company has recalled the product,” he said.

Vivaderm Resources had previously notified the bureau that it was selling the product.

(It is learnt that a notification is required to be sent to the bureau which will have to check on the product’s ingredients.)

Liow said cosmetic products were not required to be sent for tests because it would involve very high costs.

“However, we do conduct random checks on these products to ensure that they are not harmful to users,” he said.

The bureau has, to date, been notified of 97,920 cosmetic products sold in the country.
