Britain's living Barbie on right track

LONDON, May 1 (UPI) -- A British teenager says she has no qualms about beginning cosmetic surgery at age 12 in order to transform herself into the image of a Barbie doll.

Brooke Bates, 17, said her childhood weight problems had become critical and warranted a series of procedures that have included a tummy tuck, liposuction and a gastric band.

"No one can blame my mum for letting me go ahead with the surgery," Bates told the Mirror. "She didn't want to lose her daughter."

Bates said being overweight also led to a constant barrage of teasing that made her life miserable.

The newspaper said Sunday Bates' evolution eventually included breast implants, bleach-blonde hair and daily visits to a tanning booth.

"Having surgery so young definitely made me obsessed with my looks, but what's wrong with a girl wanting to make the best of herself?" Bates said.
