Appearances may not matter to some cosmetic surgery practices

National Accident Helpline is calling on people considering cosmetic surgery to check that they are using a reputable and experienced clinic with suitable aftercare.

(PRWEB UK) 3 June 2011

National Accident Helpline is calling on people considering cosmetic surgery to check that they are using a reputable and experienced clinic with suitable aftercare.

People looking to enhance their appearance ready for the summer months may be considering a cosmetic procedure. However, the number of people contacting National Accident Helpline after cosmetic surgery procedures go wrong has increased steadily in recent years.

“People find themselves left with scarring, swelling, infections and nerve damage,” said Beth Powell, consumer director of National Accident Helpline.

“The increase in the number of cosmetic surgery compensation claims may be because people are more aware of their rights or there are more procedures leading to more accidents. Either way, it is tragic that people who undergo surgery to improve their appearance end up with other problems."

“Cosmetic surgery is not just a celebrity pastime. People seek help for conditions they have had since birth and disfigurements following accidents, as well as seeking to improve their appearances through, for example, nose reshaping."

Last year the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death found that 100,000 cosmetic operations are carried out each year, more than half of the operating theatres in use were not properly equipped and a fifth had no emergency readmission policy.

National Accident Helpline is the leading marketing group for solicitors specialising in personal injury and is responsible for the campaign championing consumers’ rights to justice through the website underdog.co.uk.
