SCHEDULED POISONS DETECTED IN SIX COSMETIC PRODUCTS

KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 (Bernama) -- The health ministry has cautioned the

public against the use of six popular cosmetic products found to contain

scheduled poisons.

The products are BML HB Lotion, Shana Night Cream, Natasya Gold Herbal

Cream, Biotox Whitening Hydro Cream, Yoko Whitening Cream and Sue Beauty Night

Treatment Cream.

They contain scheduled poisons such as dexamethasone, hydroquinone and

tretinoin which caused various side-effects to consumers, said the ministry''s

pharmaceutical services division senior director, Datuk Eishah A. Rahman.

The use of dexamethasone, hydroquinone and tretinoin in cosmetic products

were prohibited and could only be used with the advice of health professionals,

she said in a statement here today.

According to Dr Eishah, tretinoin caused skin redness, discomfort, peeling

and hypersensitivity under sunlight while hydroquinone caused redness,

discomfort, unwanted skin colour change, skin hypersensitivity and

depigmentation.

Dexamethasone was a steroid which when used topically, could cause skin

irritation, dryness, pimples, thinning of skin and increased risk of bacterial

infection, she said.

She urged those in possession of the products to halt its sale, distribution

or usage.
